Effects of non-unity Lewis numbers in diffusion Flames
The purpose of this work is to carry out direct numerícal simulations of diffusion controlled combustión with non-unity Lewis numbers for the reactants and producís,
thus accounting for the düferential diífusion effects of the temperature and concentration fields. We use a formulation (Liñán (1991a)) based on combining the conservation equations in a way to elimínate the reaction terms similar to the method used by Burke and Schumann (1928) for unity Lewis numbers. We present calculations for an axisymmetric fuel jet and for a planar, time evolving mixing layer, leaving out the effects of thermal expansión and variations of the transport coefficients due to the heat reisase. Our results show that the front of the fíame sbifts toward the fuel or oxygen sides owing to the effect of the düferential diífusion and that the location of máximum temperature may not coincide with the fíame. The dependence of the distríbution of the reaction products on their Lewis number has been investigated

with a borderline between stability and instability, since for a
rotational instability arises, where counterrotating black holes appear, whose
horizon rotates in the opposite sense to the angular momentum. For
black holes are no longer uniquely characterized by their global charges, and

Recombinant Mitochondrial Transcription Factor A with N-terminal Mitochondrial Transduction Domain Increases Respiration and Mitochondrial Gene Expression in G11778A Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy Cybrid Cells
Diseases involving mitochondrial defects usually manifest themselves in high-energy, post-mitotic tissues such as brain, retina, skeletal and cardiac muscle and frequently cause deficiencies in mitochondrial bioenergetics. We have developed a scalable procedure to produce recombinant human mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) modified with an N-terminal protein transduction domain (PTD) and mitochondrial localization signal (MLS) that allow it to cross membranes and enter mitochondria through its "mitochondrial transduction domain" (MTD,=PTD+MLS). _In vitro_ studies in a classic mitochondrial disease cell model demonstrated that Alexa488-labeled MTD-TFAM rapidly entered the mitochondrial compartment. MTD-TFAM treatment of these cell lines reversibly increased oxygen consumption (respiration) rates 3-fold, levels of respiratory proteins and mitochondrial gene expression. _In vivo_ results demonstrated that respiration increased to lesser degrees in mitochondria from tissues of mice injected with MTD-TFAM. MTD-TFAM can alter mitochondrial bioenergetics and holds promise for treatment of mitochondrial diseases involving deficiencies of energy production
Ion condensation on charged patterned surfaces
We study ion condensation onto a patterned surface of alternating charges.
The competition between self-energy and ion-surface interactions leads to the
formation of ionic crystalline structures at low temperatures. We consider
different arrangements of underlying ionic crystals, including single ion
adsorption, as well as the formation of dipoles at the interface between
charged domains. Molecular dynamic simulation illustrates existence of single
and mixed phases. Our results contribute to understanding pattern recognition,
and molecular separation and synthesis near patterned surfaces.Comment: 3 figure
Exact Random Walk Distributions using Noncommutative Geometry
Using the results obtained by the non commutative geometry techniques applied
to the Harper equation, we derive the areas distribution of random walks of
length on a two-dimensional square lattice for large , taking into

Decoherence induced by Smith-Purcell radiation
The interaction between charged particles and the vacuum fluctuations of the
electromagnetic field induces decoherence, and therefore affects the contrast
of fringes in an interference experiment. In this article we show that if a
double slit experiment is performed near a conducting grating, the fringe
visibility is reduced. We find that the reduction of contrast is proportional
to the number of grooves in the conducting surface, and that for realistic
values of the parameters it could be large enough to be observed. The effect
can be understood in terms of the Smith-Purcell radiation produced by the

The Indo-U.S. Library of Coude Feed Stellar Spectra
We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9m Coud\'e Feed telescope
at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feeds the coud\'e
spectrograph of the 2.1m telescope. The spectra have been obtained with the #5
camera of the coud\'e spectrograph and a Loral 3K X 1K CCD. Two gratings have
been used to provide spectral coverage from 3460 \AA to 9464 \AA, at a
resolution of 1\AA FWHM and at an original dispersion of 0.44 \AA/pixel.
For 885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 \AA to 9464 \AA
wavelength region (neglecting small gaps of 50 \AA), and partial spectral
coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars have been selected to provide
broad coverage of the atmospheric parameters T, log g, and [Fe/H], as
well as spectral type. The goal of the project is to provide a comprehensive
library of stellar spectra for use in the automated classification of stellar
and galaxy spectra and in galaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss
the characteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of the observations,
data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We also present a few
illustrations of the quality and information available in the spectra. The
first version of the complete spectral library is now publicly available from
