    Tension chylothorax following pneumonectomy

    AbstractPost-pneumonectomy chylothorax is an uncommon complication following surgery, with an estimated incidence of less than 0.7%. Post-pneumonectomy tension chylothorax, where rapid accumulation of chyle in the post-pneumonectomy space results in hemodynamic compromise, is exceedingly rare, with just 7 cases previously reported. All prior cases of tension chylothorax were managed operatively with decompressive chest tube placement followed by open thoracic duct repair. Our case is the first reported tension chylothorax to be managed conservatively by thoracostomy drainage coupled with a period of parenteral nutrition followed by a medium chain triglyceride-restricted diet

    Corporate Governance System and Organisational Control in Nigerian Manufacturing Industries

    Corporate governance is one of the fundamental issues in the management of business organisations. The outright failure of corporate governance system can, therefore, be argued to be a major contributor to the collapse of many of the well-celebrated organisations that have littered the Nigeria corporate landscape. The focus of this study is to determine the effect of corporate governance on stakeholders' behaviour in the management of organisational resources. Also, to determine how internal governance factors affect organisational resources control. The population comprises of the entire quoted manufacturing companies on Nigerian Stock Exchange drawn from textiles, chemical and paints, building materials, breweries, industrial and domestic product. While simple random sampling technique was used to choose a sample size of seventy-five (75) executive directors. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 software was used to analysed the data and the hypotheses were tested using Kendall’s W Test. Result shows that corporate governance has a significant effect on stakeholders' behaviour in the management of organisational resources. Equally, internal governance factors have a significant effect on organisational resources control. The study, therefore, recommends among others that there is a need to revisit code of corporate governance and harness these codes that are scattered in various Acts, to enact a single corporate governance Act in order to reawake stakeholders' trust; proper control; accountability; transparency; and effective management of organisational resources.     Zn doped nanocrystalline CuCl thin films for optoelctronic applications

    We report on the use of Zn as an n-type dopant in CuCl thin films for optoelectronic applications, wherein maximum n-type doping of the order of 1018 cm -3 has been achieved. Zn doped nanocrystalline CuCl thin films are successfully deposited on glass and Si substrates by pulsed dc magnetron sputtering. Structural and morphological properties are investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. The conductivity of the CuCl:Zn films is examined using the four point probe technique. An order of magnitude increase in the conductivity of CuCl, by the doping with Zn is reported herein. The doped CuCl films display strong room temperature cathodoluminescence (CL) at ~ 385nm, which is similar to that of the undoped films. Hall Effect measurements show an n-type conductivity of the doped films

    Antibacterial Activities of Selected Green Seaweeds from West African Coast

    The continually increasing antibiotic resistance amongst microorganisms had steered up an increased intensity in the search for new drugs. The marine environment had been reported to be a great source of novel compounds with diverse biological activities and this had engendered the attention of researcher globally, but the West African Coast despite being blessed with a variety of Macro-algae remain untapped. This study was, therefore, embarked upon to investigate the antibacterial activities of selected green algal species from the West African coast. Crude extracts of Ulva fasciata, Ulva lactuca, Chladophora vagabunda, Caulepa taxifolia, Chaetomorpha antennina and Chaetomorpha linum were obtained by maceration using Dichloromethane/methanol (DCM/MeOH), chloroform/methanol (CHL/MeOH) 90% (v/v), Ethanol and Diethyl ether as solvents. Extracts were screened against some bacterial pathogens including Gram-positive bacteria- clinical strain (Sa I), S. aureus laboratory strain (Sa II), S. aureus ATCC 25922 (Sa III), Bacillus subtilis (Bs), Streptococcus pneumonia (Sp), Streptococcus faecalis (Sf) and Mycobacterium aurum (Ma). Gram-negative test bacteria were Escherichia coli clinical (Ec I) and Escherichia coli laboratory strain (Ec II), Escherichia coli NCTC 10418 (Ec III), E. coli ATCC 25923 (Ec IV), Proteus vulgaris (Pv), Proteus mirabilis (Pm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) Pseudomonas putida (Pp), Salmonella typhi clinical strain (St I), Salmonella typhi NCTC 8385 (St II), Serratia macerans (Sm) and Klebsiella pneumonia (Kp). Crude extracts were obtained using Antibacterial screening was carried out by disc diffusion method. The result analysis was done by mean ± SD. The result showed that all the screened algae had antibacterial activity against at least one of the test organisms. Four (57%) of the seven algal species tested demonstrated inhibitory activities against the Gram-positive test bacteria while all the seven species tested showed inhibitory activities against the Gram-negative test bacteria. Highest inhibitory zone against Gram-negative bacterial species was observed in dichloromethane/methanol extract of Caulepa taxifolia (DCCT) against E. coli measuring 14.67 mm while the highest activity against Gram-positive bacterial strain was observed in diethyl acetate extract of Chaetomorpha antennina (DECA) against S. aureus (SaII) with an inhibitory zone of 17.67 mm. Extracts of Chaetomorpha antennina showed the highest inhibitory activities in this study. The result of this study showed that extracts from species of green macro-algae from the West African Coast possess antibacterial compounds that can serve as lead drug candidates in the quest for new antibacterial therapy if well explored

    Solution Structure of a CUE-Ubiquitin Complex Reveals a Conserved Mode of Ubiquitin Binding

    AbstractMonoubiquitination serves as a regulatory signal in a variety of cellular processes. Monoubiquitin signals are transmitted by binding to a small but rapidly expanding class of ubiquitin binding motifs. Several of these motifs, including the CUE domain, also promote intramolecular monoubiquitination. The solution structure of a CUE domain of the yeast Cue2 protein in complex with ubiquitin reveals intermolecular interactions involving conserved hydrophobic surfaces, including the Leu8-Ile44-Val70 patch on ubiquitin. The contact surface extends beyond this patch and encompasses Lys48, a site of polyubiquitin chain formation. This suggests an occlusion mechanism for inhibiting polyubiquitin chain formation during monoubiquitin signaling. The CUE domain shares a similar overall architecture with the UBA domain, which also contains a conserved hydrophobic patch. Comparative modeling suggests that the UBA domain interacts analogously with ubiquitin. The structure of the CUE-ubiquitin complex may thus serve as a paradigm for ubiquitin recognition and signaling by ubiquitin binding proteins

    Investigation of E. coli and Virus Reductions Using Replicate, Bench-Scale Biosand Filter Columns and Two Filter Media

    The biosand filter (BSF) is an intermittently operated, household-scale slow sand filter for which little data are available on the effect of sand composition on treatment performance. Therefore, bench-scale columns were prepared according to the then-current (2006–2007) guidance on BSF design and run in parallel to conduct two microbial challenge experiments of eight-week duration. Triplicate columns were loaded with Accusand silica or crushed granite to compare virus and E. coli reduction performance. Bench-scale experiments provided confirmation that increased schmutzdecke growth, as indicated by decline in filtration rate, is the primary factor causing increased E. coli reductions of up to 5-log10. However, reductions of challenge viruses improved only modestly with increased schmutzdecke growth. Filter media type (Accusand silica vs. crushed granite) did not influence reduction of E. coli bacteria. The granite media without backwashing yielded superior virus reductions when compared to Accusand. However, for columns in which the granite media was first backwashed (to yield a more consistent distribution of grains and remove the finest size fraction), virus reductions were not significantly greater than in columns with Accusand media. It was postulated that a decline in surface area with backwashing decreased the sites and surface area available for virus sorption and/or biofilm growth and thus decreased the extent of virus reduction. Additionally, backwashing caused preferential flow paths and deviation from plug flow; backwashing is not part of standard BSF field preparation and is not recommended for BSF column studies. Overall, virus reductions were modest and did not meet the 5- or 3-log10 World Health Organization performance targets

    Self-collected versus health-care professional taken swab for identification of vaginal-rectal colonisation with group B streptococcus in late pregnancy: a systematic review

    BackgroundTesting for group B streptococcus (GBS) requires a vaginal-rectal swab in late pregnancy.ObjectiveA systematic review of the test accuracy of a self-collected swab compared with a health-care professional collected swab in the diagnosis of GBS colonisation.Search strategyThe Cochrane Library (including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects [DARE] and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [CENTRAL]), EMBASE, MEDLINE and Trip were searched in May 2022.Selection criteriaRandomised trials, test accuracy studies or diagnostic yield studies that compared the accuracy of a self-collected vaginal-rectal swab, compared to that taken by a health-care professional, for the detection of GBS colonisation in the third trimester.Data collection and analysisTwo researchers independently screened, selected studies, extracted data and assessed study quality.Main results10 studies, with 2578 women were included. Pooled sensitivity of self-collected swabs was 0.90 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.81 to 0.95) and pooled specificity was 0.98 (95% CI 0.96 to 0.99).ConclusionThis study provides reassuring evidence that self-collected swabs for maternal GBS colonisation are highly accurate relative to swabs collected by health-care professionals. Women requiring a swab for GBS colonisation can self-swab with appropriate instructions if they choose

    Uterine adenocarcinoma with feline leukemia virus infection

    Feline endometrial adenocarcinomas are uncommon malignant neoplasms that have been poorly characterized to date. In this study, we describe a uterine adenocarcinoma in a Persian cat with feline leukemia virus infection. At the time of presentation, the cat, a female Persian chinchilla, was 2 years old. The cat underwent surgical ovariohystectomy. A cross-section of the uterine wall revealed a thickened uterine horn. The cat tested positive for feline leukemia virus as detected by polymerase chain reaction. Histopathological examination revealed uterine adenocarcinoma that had metastasized to the omentum, resulting in thickening and the formation of inflammatory lesions. Based on the histopathological findings, this case was diagnosed as a uterine adenocarcinoma with abdominal metastasis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a uterine adenocarcinoma with feline leukemia virus infection

    2005 AAPP Monograph Series

    The African American Professors Program (AAPP) at the University of South Carolina is proud to publish the fifth edition of its annual monograph series. The program recognizes the significance of offering its scholars avenue to engage actively in research and publish papers related thereto. Parallel with the publication of their refereed manuscripts is the opportunity to gain visibility among scholars throughout institutions worldwide. Scholars who have contributed manuscripts for this monograph are to be commended for adding this additional responsibility to their academic workload. Writing across disciplines adds to the intellectual diversity of these papers. From neophytes, relatively speaking, to an array of very experienced individuals, the chapters have been researched and comprehensively written. Founded in 1997 through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policies in the College of Education, AAPP was designed to address the underrepresentation of African American professors on college and university campuses. Its mission is to expand the pool of these professors in critical academic and research areas. Sponsored by the University of South Carolina, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and the South Carolina General Assembly, the program recruits doctoral students for disciplines in which African Americans currently are underrepresented among faculty in higher education. The continuation of this monograph series is seen as responding to a window of opportunity to be sensitive to an academic expectation of graduates as they pursue career placement and, at the same time, one that allows for the dissemination of AAPP products to a broader community. The importance of this monograph series has been voiced by one of our 2002 AAPP graduates, Dr. Shundele LaTjuan Dogan, a recent Administrative Fellow at Harvard University and now a Program Officer for the Southern Education Foundation, Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Dogan wrote: One thing in particular that I want to thank you for is having the African American Professors Program scholars publish articles for the monograph. I have to admit that writing the articles seemed like extra work at the time. However, in my recent interview process, organizations have asked me for samples of my writing.
