    Is there still a place for docetaxel rechallenge in prostate cancer?

    Three-weekly docetaxel plus prednisone is the standard first-line cytotoxic treatment for patients with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Today, several new treatment options are available for patients with tumor progression after first-line docetaxel: Abiraterone, enzalutamide, cabazitaxel, sipuleucel-T immunotherapy, and the radionuclide radium-223. However, despite the evolving scenario in CRPC treatment, the optimal sequencing of the innovative therapies remains unclear. The reintroduction of docetaxel at the occurrence of disease progression after a drug holiday (docetaxel rechallenge) was often proposed, and this chemotherapeutic agent showed to maintain antitumor activity in mCRPC patients. Docetaxel rechallenge may still constitute a valid treatment option mainly for patients with favorable response to first-line docetaxel, at least > 3 mo progression-free interval, age less than 75 years, good performance status, and acceptable docetaxel toxicity. The risk of cumulative toxicity must be evaluated, since sensory neuropathy, nail disorders and fatigue might occur on docetaxel rechallenge

    Learnable Descriptors for Visual Search

    This work proposes LDVS, a learnable binary local descriptor devised for matching natural images within the MPEG CDVS framework. LDVS descriptors are learned so that they can be sign-quantized and compared using the Hamming distance. The underlying convolutional architecture enjoys a moderate parameters count for operations on mobile devices. Our experiments show that LDVS descriptors perform favorably over comparable learned binary descriptors at patch matching on two different datasets. A complete pair-wise image matching pipeline is then designed around LDVS descriptors, integrating them in the reference CDVS evaluation framework. Experiments show that LDVS descriptors outperform the compressed CDVS SIFT-like descriptors at pair-wise image matching over the challenging CDVS image dataset

    A method (500) for generating a time scheduling (150) of a contents stream (140) distributed to a plurality of terminals (120) is provided. The contents stream is segmented in consecutive segments, each segment defining a corresponding program (Pi). The method includes receiving auxiliary meta data comprising a planned time scheduling of the content stream which has been set in advance and monitoring at least a portion of a segment of the contents stream to extract corresponding content features there from. The method further includes generating a corresponding fingerprint based on the extracted content features and assessing at least one among an actual start time and an actual end time of such segment based on a comparison between said fingerprint and a reference fingerprint associated with such segment. The method still further includes updating the planned time scheduling based on the assessed at least one among the actual start time and the actual end time so as to generate a time scheduling synchronized with the contents stream

    VUV-Vis optical characterization of Tetraphenyl-butadiene films on glass and specular reflector substrates from room to liquid Argon temperature

    The use of efficient wavelength-shifters from the vacuum-ultraviolet to the photosensor's range of sensitivity is a key feature in detectors for Dark Matter search and neutrino physics based on liquid argon scintillation detection. Thin film of Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) deposited onto the surface delimiting the active volume of the detector and/or onto the photosensor optical window is the most common solution in current and planned experiments. Detector design and response can be evaluated and correctly simulated only when the properties of the optical system in use (TPB film + substrate) are fully understood. Characterization of the optical system requires specific, sometimes sophisticated optical methodologies. In this paper the main features of TPB coatings on different, commonly used substrates is reported, as a result of two independent campaigns of measurements at the specialized optical metrology labs of ENEA and University of Tor Vergata. Measured features include TPB emission spectra with lineshape and relative intensity variation recorded as a function of the film thickness and for the first time down to LAr temperature, as well as optical reflectance and transmittance spectra of the TPB coated substrates in the wavelength range of the TPB emission

    Evaluation of the weight loss of raw beef cuts vacuum-packaged with two different techniques

    In the present study, 25 cuts of shank form adult cattle coming from the same slaughtering batch, were withdrawn just after manual sectioning/deboning, and each divided into two pieces (Prox and Dist) of approximately the same weight, that were vacuum packaged by using two different packaging systems: vacuum chamber machine with a bag material and a thermo-forming packaging machine with top and bottom webs named BAG and THF respectively. The packed cuts were stored at 2-3\ub0C for 20 days. The drip loss was calculated at the end of the storage as the difference between drained weight and net. Internal muscle pH and pH of the exudate present in the package and microbiological analyses (by pooling the samples) were performed at T0 and at the end of the storage. The drip loss, was significantly lower with BAG packaging: this difference was evident after 20 days of storage (average \ub1 STD BAG vs THF = 1.04\ub10.36% vs 1.71\ub10.42%; P<0.01). The values were, in general, low for both the packaging systems, never above 2%. Moreover, shrink bag packages are characterized by better overall pack appearance and less plastic weight per pack. Forming step reduce the thickness of ther-moforming material lowering the mechanical resistance and the barrier to oxygen, on the contrary after shrinking bag materials are thickened. The pH of muscles was stable, although a slight increase was evidenced after 20 (average \ub1 STD BAG vs THF= 5.73\ub10.05 vs 5.78\ub10.09; P<0.01), due to the ageing of meat. The pH of the exudate was equal at T20 (average \ub1 STD BAG vs THF = 5.34\ub10.20 vs 5.33\ub10.17). The drip loss didn\u2019t influence the development of all the microflora; in particular LAB, that represented the main microbial population, showed a gradual increase from T0 (2.20\ub10.41 Log CFU/g) to T20 (average \ub1 STD BAG vs THF= 4.76\ub10.29 Log CFU/g vs 4.75\ub10.0.15 Log CFU/g). No Enterobacteriaceae showed an increase, if compared to the initial counts, due to the prolonged storage and the gradual growth of ephemeral microorganisms, without differences among the two series (Enterobacteriaceae: T0=<1.7 Log CFU/g to T20 average \ub1 STD BAG vs THF = 2.83\ub10.77 Log CFU/g vs 3.09\ub10.0.70 Log CFU/g). In conclusion, the use of the BAG system demonstrated to have an effect in reducing the drip loss of beef cuts during the refrigerated storage, with only slight influence on the other characteristics of raw meat

    Weekly epirubicin in patients with hormone-resistant prostate cancer

    The aim of this study was to investigate the benefit of weekly epirubicin in the treatment of metastatic hormone-resistant prostate cancer. One hundred and forty-eight patients with metastatic hormone-resistant prostate cancer received weekly 30-min intravenous infusions of epirubicin 30 mg m2 of body surface area. The primary end-point was palliative response, defined as a reduction in pain intensity and an improvement in performance status. The secondary end-points were the duration of the palliative response, quality of life and survival. Fifty-seven (44%) of the 131 evaluable patients met the primary criterion of palliative response after six treatment cycles and 73 (56%) after 12 cycles; the median duration of the response was 9 months (range 1–11). The median global quality of life improved in 52% of the patients after six cycles and in 68% after 12 cycles. The 12- and 18-month survival rates were respectively 56 and 31%, with a median survival of 13+ months (range 1–36). The treatment was well tolerated: grade 3 neutropenia was observed in 8% of the patients, grade 3 anaemia in 7%, and grade 3 thrombocytopenia in 3%. None of the patients developed grade 4 toxicity or congestive heart failure. Weekly epirubicin chemotherapy can lead to a rapid and lasting palliative result in patients with metastatic HRPC, and have a positive effect on the quality of life and survival

    Near-real time forest change detection using PlanetScope imagery

    © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. To combat global deforestation, monitoring forest disturbances at sub-annual scales is a key challenge. For this purpose, the new Planetscope nano-satellite constellation is a game changer, with a revisit time of 1 day and a pixel size of 3-m. We present a near-real time forest disturbance alert system based on PlanetScope imagery: the Thresholding Rewards and Penances algorithm (TRP). It produces a new forest change map as soon as a new PlanetScope image is acquired. To calibrate and validate TRP, a reference set was constructed as a complete census of five randomly selected study areas in Tuscany, Italy. We processed 572 PlanetScope images acquired between 1 May 2018 and 5 July 2019. TRP was used to construct forest change maps during the study period for which the final user’s accuracy was 86% and the final producer’s accuracy was 92%. In addition, we estimated the forest change area using an unbiased stratified estimator that can be used with a small sample of reference data. The 95% confidence interval for the sample-based estimate of 56.89 ha included the census-based area estimate of 56.19 ha.s
