Simplified expressions for dynamic behavior of cylindrical shells uncoupled and coupled with liquids
The dynamic behavior of cylindrical shells is essential in many practical applications. These include in-vacuum and coupled vibrations of structures with contained fluids. Closed-form solutions are extremely complex since they involve many terms and algebraic operations that require numerical solvers. In this work, a simplified closed-form solution for the free vibration analysis of an empty or filled with an inviscid and incompressible fluid cylindrical tank is presented. The proposed analytical method is developed for a simply supported cylindrical shell, based on an energy formulation obtained with variational calculus, and provides explicit expressions for natural frequencies, which can be easily programmed in a spreadsheet. The fluid is represented by an acoustic cavity, modeled by the wave equation, and the fluid-structure interaction is reduced to an added mass of fluid in the uncoupled shell equations of motion. A finite element model was built using ANSYS software to validate the proposed procedure. The natural frequencies and mode shapes were studied, and the results obtained are consistent with analytical, numerical and experimental results
Analytical-numerical study of the fluid-elastic free vibrations in cylindrical shells for different contour conditions
Structures in general have the main role of transmitting the vertical and horizontal static loads to the ground, as well as to respond to dynamic demands through their structural elements with adequate strength and good performance in service. Thus, cylindrical shells stand out and they are characterized by a slender structure widely used in civil engineering, mechanical, naval and aerospace industry, and in other areas around the world. The vertical cylindrical vessels, which are the object of study in this work, are modeled by a cylindrical shell and can be subjected to the dynamic request with the structural response (tensions, frequencies, deformed modal, etc.) influenced by several variables. Therefore, in this work, the free vibrations and the forced vibrations of an empty cylindrical vessel and a cylindrical vessel totally filled with a liquid are studied for different conditions of the attachment of the shell. The analysis is based on the theory of Soedel (2005), the analytical technique of Sharma & Johns (1971), the variational calculation through the shell energy equations, and the finite element method (MEF) using ANSYS software ®. The fluid is modeled by the wave equation and incorporated into the cylindrical shell through an additional mass of fluid. The effects of sloshing and hydrostatic pressure are neglected. To demonstrate the validity of the modeling in the software, the analytical results are compared with the numerical results obtained through the MEF. Natural frequencies and modal forms of the structure, decoupled and coupled fluid-structure are investigated. In addition, the dominant modes in the coupled vibration are evaluated and the additional mass is addressed for different boundary conditions. Subsequently, in the analysis of forced vibration for the decoupled and coupled fluid-structure system, the dynamic response was obtained due to a punctual harmonic loading in the shell. With the computational simulation and the analytical model, when applicable, the results were satisfactory for each case
Analytic-numerical and experimental study of dynamic fluidstructure interaction problems with application to concrete dams and locks
catástrofes tanto no âmbito econômico quanto no social e ambiental.
demonstraram diferenças percentuais inferiores a 5% no regime incompressÃvel. No regime
parâmetros atrelados as dimensões geométricas do reservatório acoplado a barragens e
analiticamente, numericamente e experimentalmente apresentaram diferenças percentuais
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES).Concrete gravity dams and locks are structures, almost always large in size, which have a
wide variety of uses, according to the needs of each region where they are implemented. In
the engineering of these structures, it is essential to guarantee minimum safety conditions,
once their rupture can generate real catastrophes both economically and socially and
environmentally. As a result, this paper addresses an analytical-numerical and experimental
study of dynamic fluid-structure interaction problems, with application to concrete gravity
dams and locks. At first, a simplified analytical methodology, called the Prescribed Pressure
Field Artifice (PPFA), was made to determine the decoupled and fluid-structure coupled
natural frequencies associated with the additional mass dominant modes in an
incompressible regime. The PPFA covers structures with constant or linearly varying inertia,
and makes it possible to obtain the frequencies associated with impulsive hydrodynamic
pressures for different vibration modes in a dam-reservoir and lock-reservoir coupled
problem. The results obtained by PPAF were compared with the Finite Element Method
(FEM), using ANSYS® software, with the Pseudo-dynamic Method, with the Modified
Transfer Matrix Method (MTMM) and with literature results. The comparative studies were
applied to several dam and lock geometries. The responses were satisfactory and showed
percentage differences of less than 5% in the incompressible regime. In the compressible
regime the percentage differences were larger (around 10 to 20%). The PPAF was also
applied in determining frequencies at Pina Flat Dam, Tsuruda Dam and Koyna Dam. A
parametric study evaluating the influence of parameters related to the geometric dimensions
of the reservoir coupled with dams and locks was presented. Furthermore, in the analysis of
lock-reservoir interaction, a study was done to investigate the natural frequencies and
vibration modes associated with free surface sloshing waves with application to TucuruÃ
lock. Finally, to complement the study of sloshing, the work includes an experimental
approach. A harmonic vibrating table was built and used to study the free surface sloshing
effects in a reservoir with rigid boundaries. In this perspective, the Motion Capture by Video Technique (MCVT) was used to acquire the experimental results. The comparative studies
on natural frequencies and convective (sloshing) pressures obtained analytically,
numerically and experimentally showed maximum percentage differences of 7.32%.
Therefore, this work contributes to several aspects related to fluid-structure interaction in
dams and locks
Crescimento inicial de Dimorphandra wilsonii (Fabaceae - Caesalpinioideae) em diferentes condições de fertilidade em solo de cerrado Early development of Dimorphandra wilsonii (Fabaceae - Caesalpinioideae) in Cerrado under different soil fertility conditions
Dimorphandra wilsonii Rizz. It has been described for sites of higher soil fertility in the Cerrado Domain. However, it occurs nowadays in isolated areas of low natural fertility. To study species adaptation to oligotrophic conditions, plants were grown in a greenhouse in soils from oligotrophic sites but with different levels of fertility. After soil fertility analysis, the macronutrients (NPK) and lime doses to be used in each treatment were defined, resulting in a combination of two liming levels and three fertilization levels. After 220 days, the treatments that significantly increased seedling growth were the one whose substrate was limed and fertilized with twice the prescribed NPK dosage, and the one with the indicated dosage of NPK but no liming. Liming itself did not promote growth enhancement, but favored increased growth response to increasing levels of nutrient availability. Root nodules were found in all the treatments, and the results led to the conclusion that D. wilsonii nutritional requirements are consistent with its original distribution sites in the Cerrado Domain. It was also possible to highlight nitrogen biological fixation, an unusual feature in Caesalpinioideae, as an adaptive strategy for survival in areas of low nutrient availability
