    Infant cortex responds to other humans from shortly after birth

    A significant feature of the adult human brain is its ability to selectively process information about conspecifics. Much debate has centred on whether this specialization is primarily a result of phylogenetic adaptation, or whether the brain acquires expertise in processing social stimuli as a result of its being born into an intensely social environment. Here we study the haemodynamic response in cortical areas of newborns (1–5 days old) while they passively viewed dynamic human or mechanical action videos. We observed activation selective to a dynamic face stimulus over bilateral posterior temporal cortex, but no activation in response to a moving human arm. This selective activation to the social stimulus correlated with age in hours over the first few days post partum. Thus, even very limited experience of face-to-face interaction with other humans may be sufficient to elicit social stimulus activation of relevant cortical regions

    On-chip electrically controlled routing of photons from a single quantum dot

    Electrical control of on-chip routing of photons emitted by a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot (SAQD) is demonstrated in a photonic crystal cavity-waveguide system. The SAQD is located inside an H1 cavity, which is coupled to two photonic crystal waveguides. The SAQD emission wavelength is electrically tunable by the quantum-confined Stark effect. When the SAQD emission is brought into resonance with one of two H1 cavity modes, it is preferentially routed to the waveguide to which that mode is selectively coupled. This proof of concept provides the basis for scalable, low-power, high-speed operation of single-photon routers for use in integrated quantum photonic circuits

    Wave Function of the Radion in the dS and AdS Brane Worlds

    We study the linearized metric perturbation corresponding to the radion for the generalization of the five dimensional two brane setup of Randall and Sundrum to the case when the curvature of each brane is locally constant but non-zero. We find the wave fuction of the radion in a coordinate system where each brane is sitting at a fixed value of the extra coordinate. We find that the radion now has a mass2^2, which is negative for the case of de Sitter branes but positive for anti de Sitter branes. We also determine the couplings of the radion to matter on the branes, and construct the four dimensional effective theory for the radion valid at low energies. In particular we find that in AdS space the wave function of the radion is always normalizable and hence its effects, though small, remain finite at arbitrarily large brane separations.Comment: Version which appears in Phys.     We study fundamental properties of the fractional, one-dimensional Weyl operator P^α\hat{\mathcal{P}}^{\alpha} densely defined on the Hilbert space H=L2(R,dx)\mathcal{H}=L^2({\mathbb R},dx) and determine the asymptotic behaviour of both the free Green's function and its variation with respect to energy for bound states. In the sequel we specify the Birman-Schwinger representation for the Schr\"{o}dinger operator KαP^α−g∣V^∣K_{\alpha}\hat{\mathcal{P}}^{\alpha}-g|\hat{V}| and extract the finite-rank portion which is essential for the asymptotic expansion of the ground state.     Physical disaggregation of numerical model rainfall

    International audienceA methodology is presented for the disaggregation of numerical model fields of convective rainfall using a physically based procedure. The scheme uses surface sensible heat flux values derived from high-resolution multichannel satellite radiometer observations. The sensible heat flux values initialise a simple convective model to calculate the convective disaggregation parameter (CDP), which is theoretically proportional to the convective rainfall rate. The CDP diagnostic parameter can be derived as a one-time field if the surface characteristics are invariant, as a seasonal value may be, or it may be evaluated on a case by case basis. Once found, the CDP can be used to disaggregate numerical weather prediction (NWP) convective rainfall fields for as far ahead as such fields are produced

    The first application of Szemer\'edi's powerful regularity method was the following celebrated Ramsey-Tur\'an result proved by Szemer\'edi in 1972: any K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) has at most (1/8 + o(1)) N^2 edges. Four years later, Bollob\'as and Erd\H{o}s gave a surprising geometric construction, utilizing the isoperimetric inequality for the high dimensional sphere, of a K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) and (1/8 - o(1)) N^2 edges. Starting with Bollob\'as and Erd\H{o}s in 1976, several problems have been asked on estimating the minimum possible independence number in the critical window, when the number of edges is about N^2 / 8. These problems have received considerable attention and remained one of the main open problems in this area. DESIGN: Prospective cohort analysis (International epidemiological Databases to Evaluate AIDS-Multiregional) including ART-naive, HIV-infected patients aged at least 16 years, initiating ART between January 2005 and December 2012. Before April 2010 (July 2007 in Zambia) national guidelines called for patients to initiate stavudine-based or zidovudine-based regimen, whereas thereafter tenofovir or zidovudine replaced stavudine in first-line ART. METHODS: We evaluated the frequency of stavudine use and SDS by calendar year 2004-2014. Competing risk regression was used to assess the association between nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor use and SDS in the first 24 months on ART. RESULTS: In all, 33 441 (8.9%; 95% confience interval 8.7-8.9%) SDS occurred among 377 656 patients in the first 24 months on ART, close to 40% of which were amongst patients on stavudine. The decrease in SDS corresponded with the phasing out of stavudine. Competing risks regression models showed that patients on tenofovir were 20-95% less likely to require a SDS than patients on stavudine, whereas patients on zidovudine had a 75-85% decrease in the hazards of SDS when compared to stavudine. CONCLUSION: The decline in SDS in the first 24 months on treatment appears to be associated with phasing out stavudine for zidovudine or tenofovir in first-line ART in our study. Further efforts to decrease the cost of tenofovir and zidovudine for use in this setting is warranted to substitute all patients still receiving stavudine
