    Lazed and Diffused: Untangling Noble Gas Thermochronometry Data for Exhumation Rates

    Thermochronometric data can record the thermal history of rocks as they cool from high temperatures at depth to lower temperatures at the surface. This provides a unique perspective on the tectonic processes that form topography and the erosional processes that destroy it. However, quantitatively interpreting such data is a challenge because multiple models can do an equally good job at reproducing the data. In this article, we describe how inverse modeling can be used to improve quantitative interpretations of noble gas thermochronometric data on a variety of scales, ranging from mountain belts to individual mineral grains

    Transnational Civil Society Coalitions and the World Bank: Lessons From Project and Policy Influence Campaign

    This paper draws on case studies of efforts by transnational civil society coalitions to influence projects and policies of the World Bank to develop lessons about policy influence campaigns. The paper argues that transnational coalitions that succeed in influencing multilateral institutions (1) fit campaigns to their targets, (2) open up the "cracks" in the system, (3) recognize various forms of impact, and (4) create footholds that give a leg up to those who follow. Accountability within coalitions depends on (5) building local bases, (6) building interorganizational "chains" to bridge gaps among coalition members, (7) using face-to-face negotiations to build trust and shared expectations, and (8) recognizing the power of small actors in the right chains.This publication is Hauser Center Working Paper No. 3.     Ecological biogeography of North American mammals: species density and ecological structure in relation to environmental gradients

    Aim To evaluate the relationship of climate and physiography to species density and ecological diversity of North American mammals. Location North America, including Mexico and Central America. Methods Species density, size structure and trophic structure of mammalian faunas and nine environmental variables were documented for quadrats covering the entire continent. Spatial autocorrelation of species density and the environmental variables illustrated differences in their spatial structure at the continental scale. We used principal component analysis to reduce the dimensionality of the climatic variables, linear multiple regression to determine which environmental variables best predict species density for the continent and several regions of the continent, and canonical ordination to evaluate how well the environmental variables predict ecological structure of mammalian faunas over North America. Results In the best regression model, five environmental variables, representing seasonal extremes of temperature, annual energy and moisture, and elevation, predicted 88 of the variation in species density for the whole continent. Among different regions of North America, the environmental variables that predicted species density vary. Changes in the size and trophic structure of mammalian faunas accompany changes in species density. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that environmental variables representing winter temperature, frostfree period, potential and actual evapotranspiration, and elevation account for 77 of the variation in ecological structure. Main conclusions The latitudinal gradient in mammalian species density is strong, but most of it is explained by variation in the environmental variables. Each ecological category peaks in species richness under particular environmental conditions. The changes of greatest magnitude involve the smallest size categories (< 10 g, 11 100 g), aerial insectivores and frugivores. Species in these categories, mostly bats, increase along a gradient of decreasing winter temperature and increasing annual moisture and frostfree period, trends correlated with latitude. At the opposite end of this gradient, species in the largest size category (101 1000 kg) increase in frequency. Species in size categories 3 (101 1000 g), 5 (11 100 kg) and 6 (101 1000 kg), herbivores, and granivores increase along a longitudinal gradient of increasing annual potential evapotranspiration and elevation. Much of the spatial pattern is consistent with ecological sorting of species ranges along environmental gradients, but differential rates of speciation and extinction also may have shaped the ecological diversity of extant North American mammals.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75250/1/j.1365-2699.2000.00498.x.pd

    Incorporating 3-D parent nuclide zonation for apatite ^4He/^3He thermochronometry: An example from the Appalachian Mountains

    The ability to constrain km-scale exhumation with apatite ^4He/^3He thermochronometry is well established and the technique has been applied to a range of tectonic and geomorphic problems. However, multiple sources of uncertainty in specific crystal characteristics limit the applicability of the method, especially when geologic problems require identifying small perturbations in a cooling path. Here we present new ^4He/^3He thermochronometric data from the Appalachian Mountains, which indicate significant parent nuclide zonation in an apatite crystal. Using LA-ICPMS measurements of U and Th in the same crystal, we design a 3-D model of the crystal to explore the effects of intra-crystal variability in radiation damage accumulation. We describe a numerical approach to solve the 3-D production-diffusion equation. Using our numerical model and a previously determined time temperature path for this part of the Appalachians, we find excellent agreement between predicted and observed ^4He/^3He spectra. Our results confirm this time-temperature path and highlight that for complex U and Th zonation patterns, 3-D numerical models are required to infer an accurate time-temperature history. In addition, our results provide independent and novel evidence for a radiation damage control on diffusivity. The ability to exploit intra-crystal differences in 4He diffusivity (i.e., temperature sensitivity) greatly increases the potential to infer complex thermal histories

    Impact of Sb and Na Doping on the Surface Electronic Landscape of Cu2ZnSnS4 Thin Films

    Open-circuit voltage deficiency is the key limiting factor in Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin-film solar cells, which is commonly associated with band tails and deep gap states arising from elemental disorder. The introduction of dopants such as Na and Sb has led to improvement in device performance, yet their effects on the optoelectronic properties of CZTS are yet to be fully elucidated. In this Letter, we unraveled the effect of Sb and Na:Sb co-doping on the surface energy landscape of solution-processed CZTS films employing energy-filtered photoelectron emission microscopy. In the absence of the additives, 150 nm resolution photoemission maps reveal oscillations in the local effective work function as well as areas of low photoemission energy threshold. The introduction of dopants substantially reshapes the photoemission maps, which we rationalize in terms of Cu:Zn and Sn disorder. Finally, we establish unprecedented correlations between the photoemission landscape of thin films and the performance of over 200 devices

    Soluble tau species, not neurofibrillary aggregates, disrupt neural system integration in a tau transgenic model

    Neurofibrillary tangles are a feature of Alzheimer disease and other tauopathies, and while they are generally believed to be markers of neuronal pathology, there is little evidence evaluating whether tangles directly impact neuronal function. To investigate the response of cells in hippocampal circuits to complex behavioral stimuli, we used an environmental enrichment paradigm to induce expression of an immediate-early gene, Arc, in the rTg4510 mouse model of tauopathy. These mice reversibly overexpress P301L tau and exhibit substantial neurofibrillary tangle deposition, neuronal loss, and memory deficits. Employing fluorescent in situ hybridization to detect Arc mRNA, we found that rTg4510 mice have impaired hippocampal Arc expression both without stimulation and in response to environmental enrichment; this likely reflects the combination of functional impairments of existing neurons and loss of neurons. However, tangle-bearing cells were at least as likely as non-tangle-bearing neurons to exhibit Arc expression in response to enrichment. Transgene suppression with doxycycline for 6 weeks resulted in increased percentages of Arc-positive cells in rTg4510 brains compared to untreated transgenics, restoring enrichment-induced Arc mRNA levels to that of wild-type controls despite the continued presence of neurofibrillary pathology. We interpret these data to indicate that soluble tau contributes to impairment of hippocampal function, while tangles do not preclude neurons from responding in a functional circuit

    On two problems in graph Ramsey theory

    We study two classical problems in graph Ramsey theory, that of determining the Ramsey number of bounded-degree graphs and that of estimating the induced Ramsey number for a graph with a given number of vertices. The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph KNK_N contains a monochromatic copy of H. A famous result of Chv\'atal, R\"{o}dl, Szemer\'edi and Trotter states that there exists a constant c(\Delta) such that r(H) \leq c(\Delta) n for every graph H with n vertices and maximum degree \Delta. The important open question is to determine the constant c(\Delta). The best results, both due to Graham, R\"{o}dl and Ruci\'nski, state that there are constants c and c' such that 2^{c' \Delta} \leq c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta \log^2 \Delta}. We improve this upper bound, showing that there is a constant c for which c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta \log \Delta}. The induced Ramsey number r_{ind}(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N for which there exists a graph G on N vertices such that every two-coloring of the edges of G contains an induced monochromatic copy of H. Erd\H{o}s conjectured the existence of a constant c such that, for any graph H on n vertices, r_{ind}(H) \leq 2^{c n}. We move a step closer to proving this conjecture, showing that r_{ind} (H) \leq 2^{c n \log n}. This improves upon an earlier result of Kohayakawa, Pr\"{o}mel and R\"{o}dl by a factor of \log n in the exponent.Comment: 18 page

    Interleukin-17 as a molecular target in immune-mediated arthritis: Immunoregulatory properties of genetically modified murine dendritic cells that secrete interleukin-4

    Objective Our previous studies have shown that murine dendritic cells (DCs) genetically modified to express interleukin-4 (IL-4) reduce the incidence and severity of murine collagen-induced arthritis. The present studies were performed to assess the immunoregulatory mechanisms underlying this response, by assessing the effects of IL-4 DCs on cytokine production by subsets of T helper cells. Methods Male DBA mice ages 6–8 weeks old were immunized with type II collagen. Splenic T cells obtained during the initiation phase and the end stage of arthritis were cultured with IL-4 DCs or untransduced DCs in the presence of collagen rechallenge. Interferon-Γ (IFNΓ) and IL-17 responses were measured. Antibodies to IL-4, IL-12, and IL-23, and recombinant IL-4, IL-12, and IL-23 were used to further study the regulation of T cell cytokine production by IL-4 DCs. Results Splenic T cells obtained during the initiation phase of arthritis produced less IL-17 when cultured in the presence of IL-4 DCs, despite their production of increased quantities of other proinflammatory cytokines (IFNΓ and tumor necrosis factor). T cell IL-17 production after collagen rechallenge was not inhibited by a lack of IL-23, since IL-4–mediated suppression of IL-17 was not reconstituted by IL-23, an otherwise potent inducer of IL-17 production by T cells. Although IL-4 DCs can produce increased quantities of IL-12 and IFNΓ, suppression of IL-17 production by IL-4 DCs was independent of both. While IL-17 production by T cells obtained during the initiation phase of arthritis was regulated by IL-4 DCs, IL-17 production by T cells obtained during end-stage arthritis was not altered. Conclusion Our data suggest that IL-4 DCs exert a therapeutic effect on collagen-induced arthritis by targeting IL-17. IL-17 suppression by IL-4 DCs is robust and is not reversed by IL-23. Timing might be important in IL-17–targeted therapy, since IL-17 production by T cells obtained during end-stage arthritis did not respond to suppression by IL-4 DCs.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/55925/1/22311_ftp.pd

    Domestic abuse prevention education: listening to the views of young people

    This paper reports on findings derived as part of a two-year project funded by the European Union’s Daphne III scheme, involving collaboration between seven partner organisations across six European countries. The project involved an evaluation, using questionnaires and focus groups, of domestic abuse prevention education programmes delivered in schools in the UK, France and Spain. This paper presents the findings from the UK focus group discussions, conducted with young people aged 10 – 11 years, and 13 –14 years to explore their opinions about the intervention delivered in their school. The focus groups revealed the following challenges for service providers in this area: young people can misunderstand issues related to domestic abuse, especially the role of power and control within relationships; there is a tension between educators giving young people free expression to share their opinions and challenging sexism and other prejudices; and boys can become disengaged with gender-based interventions. These issues point towards three key considerations when implementing a domestic abuse prevention education intervention: programme content (the what); the teaching methods used (the how); and whether teachers or external organisations should deliver the programme (the who)
