    Constraint capture and maintenance in engineering design

    The Designers' Workbench is a system, developed by the Advanced Knowledge Technologies (AKT) consortium to support designers in large organizations, such as Rolls-Royce, to ensure that the design is consistent with the specification for the particular design as well as with the company's design rule book(s). In the principal application discussed here, the evolving design is described against a jet engine ontology. Design rules are expressed as constraints over the domain ontology. Currently, to capture the constraint information, a domain expert (design engineer) has to work with a knowledge engineer to identify the constraints, and it is then the task of the knowledge engineer to encode these into the Workbench's knowledge base (KB). This is an error prone and time consuming task. It is highly desirable to relieve the knowledge engineer of this task, and so we have developed a system, ConEditor+ that enables domain experts themselves to capture and maintain these constraints. Further we hypothesize that in order to appropriately apply, maintain and reuse constraints, it is necessary to understand the underlying assumptions and context in which each constraint is applicable. We refer to them as “application conditions” and these form a part of the rationale associated with the constraint. We propose a methodology to capture the application conditions associated with a constraint and demonstrate that an explicit representation (machine interpretable format) of application conditions (rationales) together with the corresponding constraints and the domain ontology can be used by a machine to support maintenance of constraints. Support for the maintenance of constraints includes detecting inconsistencies, subsumption, redundancy, fusion between constraints and suggesting appropriate refinements. The proposed methodology provides immediate benefits to the designers and hence should encourage them to input the application conditions (rationales)

    In vitro culture with gemcitabine augments death receptor and NKG2D ligand expression on tumour cells

    Much effort has been made to try to understand the relationship between chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer and the immune system. Whereas much of that focus has been on the direct effect of chemotherapy drugs on immune cells and the release of antigens and danger signals by malignant cells killed by chemotherapy, the effect of chemotherapy on cells surviving treatment has often been overlooked. In the present study, tumour cell lines: A549 (lung), HCT116 (colon) and MCF-7 (breast), were treated with various concentrations of the chemotherapeutic drugs cyclophosphamide, gemcitabine (GEM) and oxaliplatin (OXP) for 24 hours in vitro. In line with other reports, GEM and OXP upregulated expression of the death receptor CD95 (fas) on live cells even at sub-cytotoxic concentrations. Further investigation revealed that the increase in CD95 in response to GEM sensitised the cells to fas ligand treatment, was associated with increased phosphorylation of stress activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase and that other death receptors and activatory immune receptors were co-ordinately upregulated with CD95 in certain cell lines. The upregulation of death receptors and NKG2D ligands together on cells after chemotherapy suggest that although the cells have survived preliminary treatment with chemotherapy they may now be more susceptible to immune cell-mediated challenge. This re-enforces the idea that chemotherapy-immunotherapy combinations may be useful clinically and has implications for the make-up and scheduling of such treatments

    Certainty Closure: Reliable Constraint Reasoning with Incomplete or Erroneous Data

    Constraint Programming (CP) has proved an effective paradigm to model and solve difficult combinatorial satisfaction and optimisation problems from disparate domains. Many such problems arising from the commercial world are permeated by data uncertainty. Existing CP approaches that accommodate uncertainty are less suited to uncertainty arising due to incomplete and erroneous data, because they do not build reliable models and solutions guaranteed to address the user's genuine problem as she perceives it. Other fields such as reliable computation offer combinations of models and associated methods to handle these types of uncertain data, but lack an expressive framework characterising the resolution methodology independently of the model. We present a unifying framework that extends the CP formalism in both model and solutions, to tackle ill-defined combinatorial problems with incomplete or erroneous data. The certainty closure framework brings together modelling and solving methodologies from different fields into the CP paradigm to provide reliable and efficient approches for uncertain constraint problems. We demonstrate the applicability of the framework on a case study in network diagnosis. We define resolution forms that give generic templates, and their associated operational semantics, to derive practical solution methods for reliable solutions.Comment: Revised versio

    Investigating Performance of Bonded Concrete Overlays

    A bonded concrete overlay (BCO) is a concrete pavement rehabilitation method used to extend the life of an existing concrete pavement. The BCO should bond fully with the existing concrete, leading to a thicker composite pavement section, a much stiffer pavement, and a considerable decrease in pavement stresses. For one project, cost estimates for a BCO were half as much as for full-depth replacement of a pavement. In some cases BCOs have delaminated shortly after construction. This paper proposes a framework for identifying the causes of early age delamination in BCOs. The early age behavior of newly constructed BCOs is examined. The factors affecting the long-term performance of the BCO are the quality of the surface preparation, the materials used in the BCO, and the curing of the BCO. Weather monitoring during BCO construction is recommended. Methods of detecting and mapping delaminations are discussed. Several BCO delamination case studies are analyzed using this framework. The model is useful not only for investigating BCO performance but also for understanding and preparing BCO construction specifications

    A framework for developing engineering design ontologies within the aerospace industry

    This paper presents a framework for developing engineering design ontologies within the aerospace industry. The aim of this approach is to strengthen the modularity and reuse of engineering design ontologies to support knowledge management initiatives within the aerospace industry. Successful development and effective utilisation of engineering ontologies strongly depends on the method/framework used to develop them. Ensuring modularity in ontology design is essential for engineering design activities due to the complexity of knowledge that is required to be brought together to support the product design decision-making process. The proposed approach adopts best practices from previous ontology development methods, but focuses on encouraging modular architectural ontology design. The framework is comprised of three phases namely: (1) Ontology design and development; (2) Ontology validation and (3) Implementation of ontology structure. A qualitative research methodology is employed which is composed of four phases. The first phase defines the capture of knowledge required for the framework development, followed by the ontology framework development, iterative refinement of engineering ontologies and ontology validation through case studies and experts’ opinion. The ontology-based framework is applied in the combustor and casing aerospace engineering domain. The modular ontologies developed as a result of applying the framework and are used in a case study to restructure and improve the accessibility of information on a product design information-sharing platform. Additionally, domain experts within the aerospace industry validated the strengths, benefits and limitations of the framework. Due to the modular nature of the developed ontologies, they were also employed to support other project initiatives within the case study company such as role-based computing (RBC), IT modernisation activity and knowledge management implementation across the sponsoring organisation. The major benefit of this approach is in the reduction of man-hours required for maintaining engineering design ontologies.     Effect of varying silica-limestone sand fines on the physical-mechanical performance of concrete

    The use of crushed limestone sand in the concrete industry will be quite possible and imperative for environmental reasons. Many researchers around the world have found that concrete based on 50% substitution of river sand by limestone sand gives better physico-mechanical characteristics. The main objective of this investigation is to search for an optimal percentage of silica-limestone fines resulting from the substitution of half in quantity of alluvial sand by crushed limestone sand in ordinary concrete. The proportions of fines that were tested in this work are 6%, 8%, 10%, 12% and 14%. The obtained results revealed that concrete based on silica-limestone sand and containing 14% of the same type of fines strongly improves the different mechanical strengths and participates in the reduction of 10% and 13%, of the coefficient of capillary absorption and of the porosity accessible to water, respectively, compared to the control concrete.     International audienceThe objective of the present study is to show how recording the changes in the rotation torque according to the rotation speed can lead to identifying a characteristic flow curve for the tested concrete. The concrete rheometer used for the study is composed of a vane tool. The rotation speed of the tool is imposed and the resulting torques are measured. The experimental rotation protocol used in this study corresponds to a rapid speed increase followed by a steady speed then the rotation speed slows down. The evolution of the torque measured as the rotation speed decrease (restructuring phase) is considered as being a succession of stationary states. By considering the fluid equivalent to a Bingham fluid for which the yield stress has already been identified and by using an analogy with a coaxial-cylinders rheometer, relevant relationships between the rotation speed of the vane and the rate of shearing along the tool are identified. Shear stress and shear rate calculations for each value of torque and rotation speed lead to the complete flow curve of the tested fluid. The data treatment method is adjusted to accurately evaluate the parameter linked to the flow stop in the case of a non-nil shear rate when the yield stress is reached. The comparison of the characteristic rheological parameters of SCC obtained from the rheometer and both spreading and V-Funnel tests indicate very satisfactory correlations
