Distributed upper-surface blowing concept

A low speed investigation was conducted in the Langley V/STOL tunnel to determine the powered lift aerodynamic performance of a distributed upper surface blown propulsive lift transport model. The model used blowing slots across the span of the wing to produce a thin jet efflux near the leading edge and at the knee of the trailing edge flap (internally blown jet flap). Results indicate that these concepts have both good propulsive related lift and low drag due to lift characteristics because of uniform spanwise propulsive thrust. The leading edge blowing concept provides low speed lift characteristics which are competitive with the flap-hinge-line blowing concept and does not require additional leading edge treatment for prevention of abrupt stall

Anomalous asymmetry of magnetoresistance in NbSe3_3 single crystals

A pronounced asymmetry of magnetoresistance with respect to the magnetic field direction is observed for NbSe$_3$ crystals placed in a magnetic field perpendicular to their conducting planes. It is shown that the effect persists in a wide temperature range and manifests itself starting from a certain magnetic induction value $B_0$, which at $T=4.2$ K corresponds to the transition to the quantum limit, i.to the state where the Landay level splitting exceeds the temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, to be appeared in JETP Let

Neonatal scrotal wall necrotizing fasciitis (Fournier gangrene): a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Necrotizing fasciitis in neonates is rare and is associated with almost 50% mortality. Although more than 80 cases of neonates (under one month of age) with necrotizing fasciitis have been reported in the literature, only six of them are identified as originating in the scrotum.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a four-week-old, full-term, otherwise-healthy Caucasian baby boy who presented with an ulcerating lesion of his scrotal wall. His scrotum was explored because of a provisional diagnosis of missed torsion of the testis. He was found to have necrotizing fasciitis of the scrotum. We were able to preserve the testis and excise the necrotic tissue, and with intravenous antibiotics there was a successful outcome.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Fournier gangrene is rarely considered as part of the differential diagnosis in the clinical management of the acute scrotum. However, all doctors who care for small babies must be aware of this serious condition and, if it is suspected, should not hesitate in referring the babies to a specialist pediatric surgical center immediately.</p

Midwinter suppression of baroclinic storm activity on Mars: observations and models

We present results from assimilated analyses of observations from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer showing evidence for a regular suppression of baroclinic circumpolar storm activity in both hemispheres of Mars around winter solstice. General circulation model simulations are then used to elucidate the structure and possible causes of this suppression, for which the local ‘Eady growth rate’ appears to be a good predictor

Dust-related interannual and intraseasonal variability of Martian climate using data assimilation

Data assimilation has been applied in several studies [Montabone et al., 2005; Lewis et al., 2005; Montabone et al., 2006a; Montabone et al., 2006b; Lewis et al., 2007; Wilson et al., 2008; Rogberg et al. 2010] as an effective tool with which to analyze spacecraft observations and phenomena (e.g., atmospheric tides, transient wave behavior, effects of clouds in the tropics, weather predictability, etc.) in the Martian atmosphere. A data assimilation scheme combined with a Martian Global Circulation Model (GCM) is able to provide a complete, balanced, four-dimensional solution consistent with observations. The GCM we use [Forget et al., 1999] combines a spectral dynamical solver and a tracer transport scheme developed in UK and Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD; Paris, France) physics package developed in collaboration with Oxford, The Open University and Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia (Granada, Spain). Here, we describe and discuss dust-related interannual and intraseasonal variability of the Martian climate. The results shown in this study come from a reanalysis using the Martian GCM with data assimilation scheme which assimilates Mars Global Surveyor/ Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS/TES) retrievals of temperature and column dust opacity. The detailed model setup was described by Montabone et al. [2006a], and the data assimilation scheme employed in this study was introduced in the work of Lewis et al. [2007]
