Mode switching in the nearby Mira-like variable R Doradus
We discuss visual observations spanning nearly 70 years of the nearby
semiregular variable R Doradus. Using wavelet analysis, we show that the star
switches back and forth between two pulsation modes having periods of 332 days
and about 175 days, the latter with much smaller amplitude. Comparison with
model calculations suggests that the two modes are the first and third radial
overtone, with the physical diameter of the star making fundamental mode
pulsation unlikely. The mode changes occur on a timescale of about 1000 d,
which is too rapid be related to a change in the overall thermal structure of
the star and may instead be related to weak chaos.
The Hipparcos distance to R Dor is 62.4 +/- 2.8 pc which, taken with its
dominant 332-day period, places it exactly on the period-luminosity relation of
Miras in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our results imply first overtone pulsation
for all Miras which fall on the P-L relation. We argue that semiregular
variables with long periods may largely be a subset of Miras and should be
included in studies of Mira behaviour. The semiregulars may contain the
immediate evolutionary Mira progenitors, or stars may alternate between periods

Solid-propellant rocket motor internal ballistic performance variation analysis, phase 2
The Monte Carlo method was used to investigate thrust imbalance and its first time derivative throughtout the burning time of pairs of solid rocket motors firing in parallel. Results obtained compare favorably with Titan 3 C flight performance data. Statistical correlations of the thrust imbalance at various times with corresponding nominal trace slopes suggest several alternative methods of predicting thrust imbalance. The effect of circular-perforated grain deformation on internal ballistics is discussed, and a modified design analysis computer program which permits such an evaluation is presented. Comparisons with SRM firings indicate that grain deformation may account for a portion of the so-called scale factor on burning rate between large motors and strand burners or small ballistic test motors. Thermoelastic effects on burning rate are also investigated. Burning surface temperature is calculated by coupling the solid phase energy equation containing a strain rate term with a model of gas phase combustion zone using the Zeldovich-Novozhilov technique. Comparisons of solutions with and without the strain rate term indicate a small but possibly significant effect of the thermoelastic coupling
DOES RURAL JOB GROWTH LEAD THE ECONOMY OUT OF RECESSION?
This paper explores the dynamics of rural and non-rural job growth to investigate if job growth starts in rural places, making it one of the leading indicators of economic growth. Empirical results provide mixed evidence. The mixed results of the Granger non-causality tests could be sensitive to the non-rural area definition. The relationship between rural job growth and non-rural job growth is not restricted to post-recession periods. Analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data suggests the spillover effects of non-rural growth are larger than the spillover effect of rural growth on non-rural areas. Universality of collapsing two-dimensional self-avoiding trails
Results of a numerically exact transfer matrix calculation for the model of
Interacting Self-Avoiding Trails are presented. The results lead to the
conclusion that, at the collapse transition, Self-Avoiding Trails are in the
same universality class as the O(n=0) model of Blote and Nienhuis (or
vertex-interacting self-avoiding walk), which has thermal exponent ,

Prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment in Muyuka: a rural health district in South West Province, Cameroon.
AIM: To estimate the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment in the population aged 40 years and over in Muyuka, a rural district in the South West Province of Cameroon. METHODS: A multistage cluster random sampling methodology was used to select 20 clusters of 100 people each. In each cluster households were randomly selected and all eligible people had their visual acuity (VA) measured by an ophthalmic nurse. Those with VA <6/18 were examined by an ophthalmologist. RESULTS: 1787 people were examined (response rate 89.3%). The prevalence of binocular blindness was 1.6% (95% CI: 0.8% to 2.4%), 2.2% (1.% to 3.1%) for binocular severe visual impairment, and 6.4% (5.0% to 7.8%) for binocular visual impairment. Cataract was the main cause of blindness (62.1%), severe visual impairment (65.0%), and visual impairment (40.0%). Refractive error was an important cause of severe visual impairment (15.0%) and visual impairment (22.5%). The cataract surgical coverage for people was 55% at the <3/60 level and 33% at the <6/60 level. 64.3% of eyes operated for cataract had poor visual outcome (presenting VA<6/60). CONCLUSIONS: Strategies should be developed to make cataract services affordable and accessible to the population in the rural areas. There is an urgent need to improve the outcome of cataract surgery. Refractive error services should be provided at the community level
Analysis of self-oscillating DC-DC resonant power converters using a hysteretic relay
The paper presents a technique for exciting resonant DC-DC converters in a self-oscillating manner. The analysis necessary to predict the behaviour of such converters is also given. The oscillation is based on the behaviour of a hysteretic relay with a negative hysteresis transition. Self-oscillating converters benefit from higher efficiency/higher power density than their non-self-oscillating counterparts as they can be operated closer to the tank resonant frequency. The self-oscillating mechanism presented here is also simple and cost effective to implement. A prototype converter is presented in order to verify the theoretical claims
Computational study of boron nitride nanotube synthesis: how catalyst morphology stabilizes the boron nitride bond
In an attempt to understand why catalytic methods for the growth of boron
nitride nanotubes work much worse than for their carbon counterparts, we use
first-principles calculations to study the energetics of elemental reactions
forming N2, B2 and BN molecules on an iron catalyst. We observe that in the
case of these small molecules, the catalytic activity is hindered by the
formation of B2 on the iron surface. We also observe that the local morphology
of a step edge present in our nanoparticle model stabilizes the boron nitride
molecule with respect to B2 due to the ability of the step edge to offer sites
with different coordination simultaneously for nitrogen and boron. Our results
emphasize the importance of atomic steps for a high yield chemical vapor
deposition growth of BN nanotubes and may outline new directions for improving
the efficiency of the method.Comment: submitted to physical review
Solar/hydrogen systems assessment. Volume 1: Solar/hydrogen systems for the 1985 - 2000 time frame
Opportunities for commercialization of systems capable of producing hydrogen from solar energy were studied. The hydrogen product costs that might be achieved by the four selected candidate systems was compared with the pricing structure and practices of the commodity gas market. Subsequently, product cost and market price match was noted to exist in the small user sector of the hydrogen marketplace. Barriers to and historical time lags in, commercialization of new technologies are reviewed. Recommendations for development and demonstration programs designed to accelerate the commercialization of the candidate systems are presented
