Jaina Art in New York City: Two Special Exhibitions
Review of two exhibitions on Jaina Art in New York 2009-10. The Victorious Ones: Jain Images of Perfection at the Rubin Museum of Art, presented an historical survey of the Jina in painting and sculpture, and Peaceful Conquerors:
Jain Manuscript Painting at the Metropolitan Museum
Jaina Temple in Stereoscopic Relief
The article presents an 3-D image of the Jaina Vimala VasahÄ«, or ÄdinÄtha temple, (1032 CE) at DilvÄážÄ on Mount ÄbĆ«, an anaglyphic rendering of the 1902 stereoview card by James Ricalton (1844-1929)
The Concept of the Flapper in the Early Writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald
A curious, but important, relationship exists between the social history of a particular age and the imaginative literature of the same period. The writings in both areas become major sources of knowledge about that era for readers in future generations. The following thesis is the outgrowth, in part, of this interest â an examination of the concept of the flapper in the early works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. For years Fitzgerald has been regarded as the chronicler of his Age. As early as 1920 he was heralded by the public as âSpokesman for the Younger Generation,â and although he seems to have been baffled at first by receiving this almost accidental distinction,1 he soon accepted the appellation and even encouraged this image of himself.2 Fitzgerald became an immediate success with the publication of his novel, This Side of Paradise in the spring of 1920; he was lionized by young people, âsimply,â he later reminisced, âfor telling. . .[them] that he felt as they did,â3 Furthermore, present culture, like 1920s culture, has been influenced by âimage makersâ who promote, often with great success, ideals in stylish appearance and behavior, and who thereby help to determine the nationâs cultural tastes.7 Just as the impact of the Beatles has extended far beyond the world of popular music (and has led trends in dress, manners, even language characteristics), so did Fitzgeraldâs influence have repercussions in non-literary aspect of his society
Improvements To The E-Learning Environment: Meeting Student Needs
Universities are changing delivery methods for courses in order to meet the demands of today’s college students. The increasing usage of internet-based courses has significant implications for institutions of higher education. With a goal of expanding enrollment, many are interested in delivering online instruction. At the same time, the proliferation of internet courses leads to questions concerning the quality of online learning. This study focuses on students’ perceptions of internet-based courses and the reasons students take such courses. Recommendations to deliver quality learning experiences in the virtual classroom are discerned

Shear Capacity of Reinforced Concrete T-Beams Retrofit with Externally Bonded CFRP Fabric: A New Perspective
Unanchored U-wrapped externally bonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabrics are widely used to increase the design shear strength of existing reinforced concrete slab-on-beam structures, but current design models do not accurately predict the degree of enhancement. Experimental investigations further indicate that some T-beams retrofit with externally bonded CFRP fabric fail at lower shear loads than nominally identical nonretrofit reference counterparts, suggesting a negative experimental CFRP contribution. This work finds a new application for the upper-bound theorem of plasticity in analyzing the problem of U-wrapped externally bonded CFRP-retrofit beam behavior. The study provides insight into the poor historical prediction of the CFRP contribution, and demonstrates the limitations of a widely used experimental approach to determining this contribution. The analysis suggests a new way of thinking about the behavior of slab-on-beam structures retrofit with unanchored U-wrapped externally bonded CFRP. The upper-bound plastic analysis provides better predictions of retrofit shear capacity than some widely used design models, indicating that this approach can lead to better design of retrofit interventions in future. This work proposes a new design limit on enhancement that can reduce the likelihood of unsafe design in practice
Managing The Evolution Of A Revolution: Marketing Implications Of Internet Media Usage Among College Students
It is no surprise that internet usage among college students has seen a marked increase in recent years. The increasing usage of this medium portends direct, negative impacts relative to the use of other media by this important market segment. Marketers are interested in internet usage information in order to determine the best methods for tapping into this potential market. Research focused on internet usage patterns of college students was conducted. Usage patterns by student classification and gender were studied. Specific use of the Facebook, MySpace and YouTube websites were investigated
Maternal fish oil supplementation in pregnancy: A 12 year follow-up of a randomised controlled test
A number of trials have been undertaken to assess whether the intake of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA) during pregnancy can influence the neurological development of the offspring, yet no consensus from these trials has been reached. We aimed to investigate the long-term effects (12 years) of fish oil supplementation in pregnancy on neurodevelopment, including cognition, language and fine motor skills. In a follow up of a previously published randomised controlled trial of 98 pregnant women, their children were assessed at 12 years of age using a battery of neurodevelopmental assessments. Fifty participants were assessed at 12 years, with 25 participantâs mothers receiving fish oil supplementation, and 25 receiving control capsules. There were no significant differences for any of the assessment measures completed. Our data indicate that fish oil supplementation during pregnancy does not influence the cognition, language or fine motor skills of children in late primary school (12 years of age)
