Flight-test measurement of the noise reduction of a jet transport delayed flap approach procedure
A delayed flap approach procedure was flight tested using the NASA CV-990 airplane to measure and analyze the noise produced beneath the flight path. Three other types of landing approaches were also flight tested to provide a comparison of the noise reduction benefits to the delayed flap approach. The conventional type of approach was used as a baseline to compare the effectiveness of the other approaches. The decelerating approach is a variation of the delayed flap approach. A detailed comparison of the ground perceived noise generated during the approaches is presented. For this comparison, the measured noise data were normalized to compensate for variations in aircraft weight and winds that occurred during the flight tests. The data show that the reduced flap approach offers some noise reduction, while the delayed flap and decelerating approaches offer significant noise reductions over the conventional approach
Water resource records of the Econfina Creek Basin area, Florida
The Econfina Creek basin area in northwestern Florida, which includes Bay
County, southeastern Washiigton County, and parts of Calhoun, Gulf, and
Jackson counties is shown in figure 1. The basin has an abundant supply of
ground water and surface water of good quality. This determination is based on
a three-year investigation of the water resources of the basin by the U. S.
Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Geology, Florida Board of
Conservation, during the period from October 1961 through June 1964. The
purpose of this report is to assemble the basic data collected during this
investigation for those persons interested in water development or management
in this basin.

Semiclassical description of the kinematically complete experiments
Based on the semiclassical, impact parameter method a theoretical model is
constructed to calculate totally differential cross sections for single
ionization of helium by impact with fast C ions. Good agreement with the
experiment is achieved in the scattering plane, while in the perpendicular
plane a similar structure to that observed experimentally is obtained. The
contribution of different partial waves to the cross section is also

Snowpack monitoring in North America and Eurasia using passive microwave satellite data
Areas of the Canadian high plains, the Montana and North Dakota high plains, and the steppes of central Russia were studied in an effort to determine the utility of spaceborne electrical scanning microwave radiometers (ESMR) for monitoring snow depths in different geographic areas. Significant regression relationships between snow depth and microwave brightness temperatures were developed for each of these homogeneous areas. In the areas investigated, Nimbus 6 (.081 cm) ESMR data produced higher correlations than Nimbus 5 (1.55 cm) ESMR data in relating microwave brightness temperature and snow depth from one area to another because different geographic areas are likely to have different snowpack conditions
Helical automatic approaches of helicopters with microwave landing systems
A program is under way to develop a data base for establishing navigation and guidance concepts for all-weather operation of rotorcraft. One of the objectives is to examine the feasibility of conducting simultaneous rotorcraft and conventional fixed-wing, noninterfering, landing operations in instrument meteorological conditions at airports equipped with microwave landing systems (MLSs) for fixed-wing traffic. An initial test program to investigate the feasibility of conducting automatic helical approaches was completed, using the MLS at Crows Landing near Ames. These tests were flown on board a UH-1H helicopter equipped with a digital automatic landing system. A total of 48 automatic approaches and landings were flown along a two-turn helical descent, tangent to the centerline of the MLS-equipped runway to determine helical light performance and to provide a data base for comparison with future flights for which the helical approach path will be located near the edge of the MLS coverage. In addition, 13 straight-in approaches were conducted. The performance with varying levels of state-estimation system sophistication was evaluated as part of the flight tests. The results indicate that helical approaches to MLS-equipped runways are feasible for rotorcraft and that the best position accuracy was obtained using the Kalman-filter state-estimation with inertial navigation systems sensors
Determination of Frequency and Distribution of Hessian Fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) Biotypes in the Northeastern Soft Wheat Region
Fifteen collections of Hessian flies from the northern soft winter wheat region of the United States were used to determine the composition and frequency of biotypes. The wheat cultivars \u27Seneca\u27 (H7Hs), \u27Monon\u27 (H3), \u27Knox 62\u27 (~, H7Hg), and \u27Abe\u27 (Hs) were used as differentials. Biotypes J and L replaced biotype B as the prevalent biotype in Indiana, since wheat cultivars having the Hs and the H6 genes have been grown. Biotype GP, the least virulent of any Hessian fly biotypes, was still present in New York indicating that wheat cuItivars with no genes for resistance are still being grown there. The genetic variability of Hessian fly biotypes that enables them to overcome the resistance in wheat cultivars is discussed
From Physical to Cyber: Escalating Protection for Personalized Auto Insurance
Nowadays, auto insurance companies set personalized insurance rate based on
data gathered directly from their customers' cars. In this paper, we show such
a personalized insurance mechanism -- wildly adopted by many auto insurance
companies -- is vulnerable to exploit. In particular, we demonstrate that an
adversary can leverage off-the-shelf hardware to manipulate the data to the
device that collects drivers' habits for insurance rate customization and
obtain a fraudulent insurance discount. In response to this type of attack, we
also propose a defense mechanism that escalates the protection for insurers'
data collection. The main idea of this mechanism is to augment the insurer's
data collection device with the ability to gather unforgeable data acquired
from the physical world, and then leverage these data to identify manipulated
data points. Our defense mechanism leveraged a statistical model built on
unmanipulated data and is robust to manipulation methods that are not foreseen
previously. We have implemented this defense mechanism as a proof-of-concept
prototype and tested its effectiveness in the real world. Our evaluation shows
that our defense mechanism exhibits a false positive rate of 0.032 and a false
