Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a mesoscopic ring with a quantum dot
We present an analysis of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations for a mesoscopic
ring with a quantum dot inserted in one of its arms. It is shown that
microreversibility demands that the phase of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations
changes {\it abruptly} when a resonant level crosses the Fermi energy. We use
the Friedel sum rule to discuss the conservation of the parity of the
oscillations at different conductance peaks. Our predictions are illustrated
with the help of a simple one channel model that permits the variation of the

Tn-Seq Analysis Identifies Genes Important for Yersinia pestis Adherence during Primary Pneumonic Plague
Following inhalation, Yersinia pestis rapidly colonizes the lung to establish infection during primary pneumonic plague. Although several adhesins have been identified in Yersinia spp., the factors mediating early Y. pestis adherence in the lung remain unknown. To identify genes important for Y. pestis adherence during primary pneumonic plague, we used transposon insertion sequencing (Tn-seq). Wild-type and capsule mutant (Îcaf1) Y. pestis transposon mutant libraries were serially passaged in vivo to enrich for nonadherent mutants in the lung using a mouse model of primary pneumonic plague. Sequencing of the passaged libraries revealed six mutants that were significantly enriched in both the wild-type and Îcaf1 Y. pestis backgrounds. The enriched mutants had insertions in genes that encode transcriptional regulators, chaperones, an endoribonuclease, and YPO3903, a hypothetical protein. Using single-strain infections and a transcriptional analysis, we identified a significant role for YPO3903 in Y. pestis adherence in the lung and showed that YPO3903 regulated transcript levels of psaA, which encodes a fimbria previously implicated in Y. pestis adherence in vitro. Deletion of psaA had a minor effect on Y. pes-tis adherence in the lung, suggesting that YPO3903 regulates other adhesins in addition to psaA. By enriching for mutations in genes that regulate the expression or assembly of multiple genes or proteins, we obtained screen results indicating that there may be not just one dominant adhesin but rather several factors that contribute to early Y. pestis adherence during primary pneumonic plague
Finite-temperature scalar fields and the cosmological constant in an Einstein universe
We study the back reaction effect of massless minimally coupled scalar field
at finite temperatures in the background of Einstein universe. Substituting for
the vacuum expectation value of the components of the energy-momentum tensor on
the RHS of the Einstein equation, we deduce a relationship between the radius
of the universe and its temperature. This relationship exhibit a maximum
temperature, below the Planck scale, at which the system changes its behaviour
drastically. The results are compared with the case of a conformally coupled
field. An investigation into the values of the cosmological constant exhibit a
remarkable difference between the conformally coupled case and the minimally

The factors determining uptake of energy crop cultivation and woodland creation in England: Insights from farmers and landowners
Perennial energy crops (PECs) and trees have key roles to play in delivering the negative emissions needed for the UK to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Significant changes to land use are needed and the decision to make changes will lie with individual landowners. Using in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this research explores the attitudes of farmers and landowners in England to replacing traditional arable and livestock farming with growing annual or perennial energy crops or planting trees. It was concluded that considerable government policy intervention will be needed to overcome the many economic and social barriers in place including lack of markets and attractive contracts for growers, high establishment costs, loss of annual income, high prices available for cereal crops and the cultural division between farming and forestry. Although energy crops and woodland creation are generally researched and regulated separately, this research suggests that annual energy crops, PECs and woodland creation form a spectrum of land use options for a landowner, with the propensity to adopt these crops being determined predominantly by crop attributes including the risk of planting and the term of commitment
Identifying the mechanisms underpinning recognition of structured sequences of action
© 2012 The Experimental Psychology SocietyWe present three experiments to identify the specific information sources that skilled participants use to make recognition judgements when presented with dynamic, structured stimuli. A group of less skilled
participants acted as controls. In all experiments, participants were presented with filmed stimuli containing structured action sequences. In a subsequent recognition phase, participants were presented with new and previously seen stimuli and were required to make judgements as to whether or not each sequence had been presented earlier (or were edited versions of earlier sequences). In Experiment 1,
skilled participants demonstrated superior sensitivity in recognition when viewing dynamic clips compared with static images and clips where the frames were presented in a nonsequential, randomized manner, implicating the importance of motion information when identifying familiar or unfamiliar sequences. In Experiment 2, we presented normal and mirror-reversed sequences in order to distort access to absolute motion information. Skilled participants demonstrated superior recognition sensitivity, but no significant differences were observed across viewing conditions, leading to the suggestion
that skilled participants are more likely to extract relative rather than absolute motion when making such judgements. In Experiment 3, we manipulated relative motion information by occluding several display
features for the duration of each film sequence. A significant decrement in performance was reported when centrally located features were occluded compared to those located in more peripheral positions.
Findings indicate that skilled participants are particularly sensitive to relative motion information when attempting to identify familiarity in dynamic, visual displays involving interaction between numerous features
Explicit results for all orders of the epsilon-expansion of certain massive and massless diagrams
An arbitrary term of the epsilon-expansion of dimensionally regulated
off-shell massless one-loop three-point Feynman diagram is expressed in terms
of log-sine integrals related to the polylogarithms. Using magic connection
between these diagrams and two-loop massive vacuum diagrams, the
epsilon-expansion of the latter is also obtained, for arbitrary values of the
masses. The problem of analytic continuation is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, late
Electron transport and energy relaxation in dilute magnetic alloys
We consider the effect of the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities on
the electron relaxation rates in a normal metal. The interplay between the RKKY
interaction and the Kondo effect may result in a non-monotonic temperature
dependence of the electron momentum relaxation rate, which determines the Drude
conductivity. The electron phase relaxation rate, which determines the
magnitude of the weak localization correction to the resistivity, is also a
non-monotonic function of temperature. For this function, we find the
dependence of the position of its maximum on the concentration of magnetic
impurities. We also relate the electron energy relaxation rate to the
excitation spectrum of the system of magnetic impurities. The energy relaxation
determines the distribution function for the out-of-equilibrium electrons.
Measurement of the electron distribution function thus may provide information
about the excitations in the spin glass phase.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Renormalization-Group Improved Effective Potential for Interacting Theories with Several Mass Scales in Curved Spacetime
The renormalization group (RG) is used in order to obtain the RG improved
effective potential in curved spacetime. This potential is explicitly
calculated for the Yukawa model and for scalar electrodynamics, i.e. theories
with several (namely, more than one) mass scales, in a space of constant
curvature. Using the -theory on a general curved spacetime
as an example, we show how it is possible to find the RG improved effective
Lagrangian in curved spacetime. As specific applications, we discuss the
possibility of curvature induced phase transitions in the Yukawa model and the
effective equations (back-reaction problem) for the -theory

Dynamics of barrier penetration in thermal medium: exact result for inverted harmonic oscillator
Time evolution of quantum tunneling is studied when the tunneling system is
immersed in thermal medium. We analyze in detail the behavior of the system
after integrating out the environment. Exact result for the inverted harmonic
oscillator of the tunneling potential is derived and the barrier penetration
factor is explicitly worked out as a function of time. Quantum mechanical
formula without environment is modifed both by the potential renormalization
effect and by a dynamical factor which may appreciably differ from the
previously obtained one in the time range of 1/(curvature at the top of
