The Adaptive Cycle As a Lens for Service Learning â Community Engagement Partnerships
This paper deploys the adaptive cycle as a construct to understand the dynamics of community engagement and partnership building during an international service-learning project. A multi-disciplinary team of USA-based university students collaborated with a local community in Zambia to build two ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines. Post-field project reflection challenged the âproduct-firstâ view commonly held in service learning projects. Time was a central point of post-field reflection. Through critical scrutiny, the team came to recognize that contextually sensitive relationship building had been essential in enabling community ownership of the project.  The construct of the adaptive cycle provided a crucial analytical tool for tracing the process through which partners from very different backgrounds achieved a sense of common purpose and opened the way for an understanding of community engagement as weaving a thread through the complex dynamics of partnership. The adaptive cycle may be useful in the preparation and implementation framework for other service learning projects emanating from institutions of higher education
The value of twinned pollinator-pollen metabarcoding: Bumblebee pollination service is weakly partitioned within a UK grassland community
Predicting ecological impact of declining bumblebee (Bombus) populations requires better understanding of interactions between pollinator partitioning of floral resources and plant partitioning of pollinator resources. Here, we combine Cytochrome Oxidase 1 (CO1) barcoding for bumblebee identification and rbcL metabarcoding of pollen carried by bees in three species-rich UK pastures. CO1 barcoding assigned 272 bees to eight species, with 33 individuals belonging to the cryptic Bombus lucorumcomplex (16 B. lucorum and 17 B. cryptarum). Seasonal bias in capture rates varied by species, with B. pratorum found exclusively in June/July and B. pascuorum moreabundant in August. Pollen metabarcoding coupled with PERMANOVA and NMDS analyses revealed all bees carried several local pollen species and evidence of pollen resource partitioning between some species pairings, with Bombus pratorum carrying the most divergent pollen load. There was no evidence of resource partitioning between the two cryptic species present, but significantly divergent capture rates concorded with previous suggestions of separation on the basis of foraging behaviour being shaped by local/temporal differences in climatic conditions. Considering the bee carriage profile of pollen species revealed no significant difference between the ninemost widely carried plant species. However, there was a sharp, tipping point change in community pollen carriage across all three sites occurred during the transition between late July and early August. This transition resulted in a strong divergence in community pollen carriage between the two seasonal periods in both years. We conclude that the combined use of pollen and bee barcoding offers several benefits for further study of plant-pollinator interactions at the landscape scale
Understanding the relationship between costs and the modified Rankin Scale: a systematic review, multidisciplinary consensus and recommendations for future studies
Background and purpose: Cost-of-illness studies often describe a single aggregate cost of a disease state. This approach is less helpful for a condition with a spectrum of outcomes like stroke. The modified Rankin Scale is the most commonly used outcome measure for stroke. We sought to describe the existing evidence on the costs of stroke according to individual modified Rankin Scale categories. This may be useful in future cost effectiveness modelling studies of interventions where cost data have not been collected, but disability outcome is known.
Methods: Systematic review of the published literature, searching electronic databases between 2004 and 2015 using validated search filters. Results were screened to identify studies presenting costs by individual modified Rankin Scale categories.
Results: Of 17,782 unique identified articles, 13 matched all inclusion criteria. In only four of these studies were costs reported by modified Rankin Scale categories. Most studies included direct medical costs only. Societal costs were assessed in two studies. Overall, studies had a high methodological and reporting quality. The heterogeneity in costing methods used in the identified studies prevented meaningful comparison of the reported cost data. Despite this limitation, the costs consistently increased with greater severity (increasing modified Rankin Scale score).
Conclusions: Few cost studies of stroke include information based on stroke recovery measured by individual modified Rankin Scale categories and the existing data are limited. To reliably capture this information, future studies are needed that preferably apply standardised costing methods to promote greater potential for use in cost-effectiveness analyses whereby direct collection of patient-level resource use has not been possible
Rationale and design of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Coronary Microvascular Function and CT Coronary Angiogram (CorCTCA) study
Background:
Microvascular and/or vasospastic anginas are relevant causes of ischemia with no obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA) in patients after computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA).
Objectives:
Our research has 2 objectives. The first is to undertake a diagnostic study, and the second is to undertake a nested, clinical trial of stratified medicine.
Design:
A prospective, multicenter, randomized, blinded, sham-controlled trial of stratified medicine (NCT03477890) will be performed. All-comers referred for clinically indicated CTCA for investigation of suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) will be screened in 3 regional centers. Following informed consent, eligible patients with angina symptoms are enrolled before CTCA and remain eligible if CTCA excludes obstructive CAD.
Diagnostic study: Invasive coronary angiography involving an interventional diagnostic procedure (IDP) to assess for disease endotypes: (1) angina due to obstructive CAD (fractional flow reserve â€0.80); (2) microvascular angina (coronary flow reserve <2.0 and/or index of microvascular resistance >25); (3) microvascular angina due to small vessel spasm (acetylcholine); (4) vasospastic angina due to epicardial coronary spasm (acetylcholine); and (5) noncoronary etiology (normal coronary function). The IDP involves direct invasive measurements using a diagnostic coronary guidewire followed by provocation testing with intracoronary acetylcholine. The primary outcome of the diagnostic study is the reclassification of the initial CTCA diagnosis based on the IDP.
Stratified medicine trial: Participants are immediately randomized 1:1 in the catheter laboratory to therapy stratified by endotype (intervention group) or not (control group). The primary outcome of the trial is the mean within-subject change in Seattle Angina Questionnaire score at 6âŻmonths.
Secondary outcomes include safety, feasibility, diagnostic utility (impact on diagnosis and certainty), and clinical utility (impact on treatment and investigations). Health status assessments include quality of life, illness perception, anxiety-depression score, treatment satisfaction, and physical activity. Participants who are not randomized will enter a follow-up registry. Health and economic outcomes in the longer term will be assessed using electronic patient record linkage.

CorCTCA will prospectively characterize the prevalence of disease endotypes in INOCA and determine the clinical value of stratified medicine in this population
Theory of quantum radiation observed as sonoluminescence
Sonoluminescence is explained in terms of quantum radiation by moving
interfaces between media of different polarizability. In a stationary
dielectric the zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field excite
virtual two-photon states which become real under perturbation due to motion of
the dielectric. The sonoluminescent bubble is modelled as an optically empty
cavity in a homogeneous dielectric. The problem of the photon emission by a
cavity of time-dependent radius is handled in a Hamiltonian formalism which is
dealt with perturbatively up to first order in the velocity of the bubble
surface over the speed of light. A parameter-dependence of the zero-order
Hamiltonian in addition to the first-order perturbation calls for a new
perturbative method combining standard perturbation theory with an adiabatic
approximation. In this way the transition amplitude from the vacuum into a
two-photon state is obtained, and expressions for the single-photon spectrum
and the total energy radiated during one flash are given both in full and in
the short-wavelengths approximation when the bubble is larger than the
wavelengths of the emitted light. It is shown analytically that the spectral
density has the same frequency-dependence as black-body radiation; this is
purely an effect of correlated quantum fluctuations at zero temperature. The
present theory clarifies a number of hitherto unsolved problems and suggests
explanations for several more. Possible experiments that discriminate this from

Accretion of Planetary Material onto Host Stars
Accretion of planetary material onto host stars may occur throughout a star's
life. Especially prone to accretion, extrasolar planets in short-period orbits,
while relatively rare, constitute a significant fraction of the known
population, and these planets are subject to dynamical and atmospheric
influences that can drive significant mass loss. Theoretical models frame
expectations regarding the rates and extent of this planetary accretion. For
instance, tidal interactions between planets and stars may drive complete
orbital decay during the main sequence. Many planets that survive their stars'
main sequence lifetime will still be engulfed when the host stars become red
giant stars. There is some observational evidence supporting these predictions,
such as a dearth of close-in planets around fast stellar rotators, which is
consistent with tidal spin-up and planet accretion. There remains no clear
chemical evidence for pollution of the atmospheres of main sequence or red
giant stars by planetary materials, but a wealth of evidence points to active
accretion by white dwarfs. In this article, we review the current understanding
of accretion of planetary material, from the pre- to the post-main sequence and
beyond. The review begins with the astrophysical framework for that process and
then considers accretion during various phases of a host star's life, during
which the details of accretion vary, and the observational evidence for

The earliest known use of the expression âgive and takeâ can be traced to horse racing. It referred to races in which larger, stronger horses carried more weight, and smaller ones, less. Implied therein is an accounting for relative capacities. In such a race, the goal remains the sameâcrossing the finish line firstâbut introducing this variable highlights the relationship between the competing horses. A win is only meaningful if each horse can be considered in relation to the others.
