q-Quaternions and q-deformed su(2) instantons
We construct (anti)instanton solutions of a would-be q-deformed su(2)
Yang-Mills theory on the quantum Euclidean space R_q^4 [the SO_q(4)-covariant
noncommutative space] by reinterpreting the function algebra on the latter as a
q-quaternion bialgebra. Since the (anti)selfduality equations are covariant
under the quantum group of deformed rotations, translations and scale change,
by applying the latter we can generate new solutions from the one centered at
the origin and with unit size. We also construct multi-instanton solutions. As
they depend on noncommuting parameters playing the roles of `sizes' and
`coordinates of the centers' of the instantons, this indicates that the moduli
space of a complete theory will be a noncommutative manifold. Similarly, gauge
transformations should be allowed to depend on additional noncommutative

Are solar neutrino oscillations robust?
The robustness of the large mixing angle (LMA) oscillation (OSC)
interpretation of the solar neutrino data is considered in a more general
framework where non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) are present. Such
interactions may be regarded as a generic feature of models of neutrino mass.
The 766.3 ton-yr data sample of the KamLAND collaboration are included in the
analysis, paying attention to the background from the reaction ^13C(\alpha,n)
^16O. Similarly, the latest solar neutrino fluxes from the SNO collaboration
are included. In addition to the solution which holds in the absence of NSI
(LMA-I) there is a 'dark-side' solution (LMA-D) with sin^2 theta_Sol = 0.70,
essentially degenerate with the former, and another light-side solution (LMA-0)
allowed only at 97% CL. More precise KamLAND reactor measurements will not
resolve the ambiguity in the determination of the solar neutrino mixing angle
theta_Sol, as they are expected to constrain mainly Delta m^2. We comment on
the complementary role of atmospheric, laboratory (e.g. CHARM) and future solar
neutrino experiments in lifting the degeneracy between the LMA-I and LMA-D
solutions. In particular, we show how the LMA-D solution induced by the
simplest NSI between neutrinos and down-type-quarks-only is in conflict with
the combination of current atmospheric data and data of the CHARM experiment.
We also mention that establishing the issue of robustness of the oscillation
picture in the most general case will require further experiments, such as

Reconstructed Jets at RHIC
To precisely measure jets over a large background such as pile up in high
luminosity p+p collisions at LHC, a new generation of jet reconstruction
algorithms is developed. These algorithms are also applicable to reconstruct
jets in the heavy ion environment where large event multiplicities are
produced. Energy loss in the medium created in heavy ion collisions are already
observed indirectly via inclusive hadron distributions and di-hadron
correlations. Jets can be used to study this energy loss in detail with reduced
biases. We review the latest results on jet-medium interactions as seen in A+A
collisions at RHIC, focusing on the recent progress on jet reconstruction in

A Stochastic Description for Extremal Dynamics
We show that extremal dynamics is very well modelled by the "Linear
Fractional Stable Motion" (LFSM), a stochastic process entirely defined by two
exponents that take into account spatio-temporal correlations in the
distribution of active sites. We demonstrate this numerically and analytically
using well-known properties of the LFSM. Further, we use this correspondence to
write an exact expressions for an n-point correlation function as well as an
equation of fractional order for interface growth in extremal dynamics.Comment: 4 pages LaTex, 3 figures .ep
Variational Study of Weakly Coupled Triply Heavy Baryons
Baryons made of three heavy quarks become weakly coupled, when all the quarks
are sufficiently heavy such that the typical momentum transfer is much larger
than Lambda_QCD. We use variational method to estimate masses of the
lowest-lying bcc, ccc, bbb and bbc states by assuming they are Coulomb bound
states. Our predictions for these states are systematically lower than those
made long ago by Bjorken.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure
The views of five participating undergraduate students of the Student Associates Scheme in England
This paper reports findings from a study which explored undergraduate perceptions of the Student Associates Scheme in England (SAS). The scheme was established by the Training and Development Agency for Schools in an attempt to increase the number of graduates entering the teaching profession, particularly in shortage subjects such as the physical sciences and mathematics. The scheme places undergraduate students on short-term placements in secondary schools throughout England to provide them with experiences that may encourage them to consider teaching as a career option. Findings show that the SAS school placements were a positive experience for the students participating in this study. However, a question emerged as to whether or not the scheme is targeting students who have yet to decide upon teaching as a career or just reinforcing the existing aspirations of students who have already decided to teach. As the scheme is attempting to increase the number of teachers entering the profession this question has important implications for this study and further work which will focus on undergraduates who think that their career ambitions would not be fulfilled by teaching
Cosmological constraints on neutrino plus axion hot dark matter: Update after WMAP-5
We update our previous constraints on two-component hot dark matter (axions
and neutrinos), including the recent WMAP 5-year data release. Marginalising
over sum m_nu provides m_a < 1.02 eV (95% C.L.) for the axion mass. In the

Challenging the empire
This paper considers how Paul Gilroy transformed hitherto dominant understandings of the relationship between race and class by developing an innovative account that foregrounded questions of racist oppression and collective resistance amid the organic crisis of British capitalism. The returns from this rethinking were profound in that he was able to make transparent both the structuring power of racism within the working class, and the necessity for autonomous black resistance. At the same time, significant lacunae in his account are identified, including the neglect of the episodic emergence of working-class anti-racism and the part played by socialists, particularly those of racialized minority descent in fashioning a major anti-racist social movement. The paper concludes with a lament for the disappearance of such work informed by a ‘Marxism without guarantees’ in the contemporary field of racism studies, and asks readers to consider the gains to be derived from such a re-engagement
