    Sleep and behavioural problems associate with low mood in Finnish children aged 4-12 years : an epidemiological study

    Background: Few studies have examined the associations between sleep, mood and behaviour in young children in the early stages of developing psychopathology. The purpose here was to examine the association of emotional problems, especially mood, with family and child characteristics, sleep and behavioural problems in 4-12 year-old children. Methods: The sample was population-based and included 1714 children. Parents filled in the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and a background questionnaire on child and family characteristics. The associations between (a) emotional symptoms/mood and background variables, (b) emotional problems and conduct problems/hyperactivity and (c) mood and conduct problems/hyperactivity were examined with ordinal regression in univariate and multivariate models. Results: Of the background variables, child's sleeping problems had the most powerful association with emotional symptoms and mood. Abnormal emotional problems score and emotional symptoms were associated with abnormal conduct problems and hyperactivity scores. Of the emotional symptoms, low mood was the one associated most strongly with conduct problems and hyperactivity after controlling for all significant background variables and other emotional symptoms. Conclusions: We conclude that in young children sleep problems associate with low mood. Low mood associates with behavioural problems. When a child presents with low mood or behavioural problems, a comprehensive assessment of their psychiatric symptoms, as well as their sleep problems, is recommended.Peer reviewe

    Self-Assembly of Polyion–Surfactant Ion Complex Salts in Mixtures with Water and n-Alcohols

    Phase behavior and structural features were investigated for "complex salts", consisting of the cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium (CTA) surfactant with polyacrylate (PA(n), n = 30 or 6000) counterions, mixed with water and different n-alcohols (ethanol, butanol, hexanol, octanol, and decanol). The liquid crystalline structures formed were identified by small-angle X-ray scattering measurements, which provided information about the changes in the geometry of the aggregates as functions of the concentration and chain length of the added n-alcohol. The obtained results were compared with a previous work on similar ternary mixtures of the same cationic surfactant but with the monomeric bromide counterion, CTABr (Fontell, K; Khan, A.; Lindstrom, B.; Maciejewska, D.; Puang-Ngem, S. Colloid Polym. Sc., 1991, 269, 727). In general, the same phases were detected in systems with the complex salts CTAPA(n) as in systems with CTABr, but the swelling of the various liquid crystalline phases by water was much more limited in the complex salt systems. An isotropic alcoholic phase was observed with all alcohols and the size of this region of the phase diagram increased for the shorter alcohols, except for ethanol. For mixtures with octanol and ethanol, in particular, the extensions of the disordered isotropic phases were larger for the complex salt with the shorter polyacrylate ions

    Feeding freqency and parental division of Labour in the double-brooded great tit Parus major

    We studied the relative contribution of each sex and total effort expended in feeding nestlings in the great tit Parus major in relation to artificially altered brood size. A recent model suggests that feeding frequency should reflect the optimal trade-off between parental and fledgling survival, the former being negatively, the latter positively, influenced by high feeding frequencies. In both sexes weight loss was linearly related to feeding frequency. Since fledgling survival increases with nestling weight, the conditions of this model are fulfilled. However, in contrast to the predictions of the model, the total feeding frequency for both sexes combined did not differ between control and enlarged broods, but was lower for reduced ones. This outcome was not the result of a physiologically related inability of the parents to increase their delivery rate. Instead, we suggest that parents with enlarged broods could not find sufficient amounts of prey large enough to be economically worth transporting to the nest. Differences in brood-provisioning rates between the sexes may arise because costs and benefits of feeding nestlings may differ. Females lost more weight than males during the nesting period, but maintained a relatively higher weight during the incubation period. The relationship between weight loss and feeding frequency was similar for both sexes. Male and female brood-feeding frequency was related to brood size in a similar way. This is discussed in light of the great tit's mating system and the fact that the great tit is facultatively double-brooded

    Phase diagram of soybean phosphatidylcholine-diacylglycerol-water studied by x-ray diffraction and 31P- and pulsed field gradient 1H-NMR: evidence for reversed micelles in the cubic phase.

    The phase equilibria of the system soybean phosphatidylcholine, diacylglycerol, and water has been determined using a combination of classical methods together with x-ray diffraction and NMR techniques. In particular, the extent of the phase regions of the lamellar, the reversed hexagonal, and the cubic phases have been determined. By pulsed field gradient 1H-NMR, the diffusion coefficients of all three components in a cubic phase composed of soybean phosphatidylcholine, diacylglycerol, and heavy water have been determined at 25 and 59 degrees C and also for the corresponding cubic phase composed of the chemically more well defined synthetic components 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), 1,2-dioleoylglycerol (DOG), and heavy water. The extension of the phase region of the cubic phase did not seem to change appreciably for the two ternary systems studied. The translational diffusion coefficient of DOPC in this cubic phase is more than an order of magnitude smaller (3 x 10(-13) m2 s-1, 59 degrees C) than the lateral diffusion coefficient of DOPC in an oriented lipid bilayer (5 x 10(-12) m2 s-1, 35 degrees C), whereas the diffusion coefficients of water and DOG were found to be about two orders of magnitude larger than DOPC at 59 degrees C. It is concluded that the cubic phase is built built up of closed reversed micelles in accordance with the suggestion from previous x-ray diffraction studies

    The LD-method of inclined incidence was found useful in the study of the orientations of probe chromophores (carotene, anthracene) solubilized in lamellar mesophases of the systems sodium octanoate/decanol/water and sodium di-2-ethylhexylsulphosuccinate/water, respectively. The results suggest the existence of two competing molecular orientation mechanisms aligning the longest axis of the probe molecule either parallel with the lamellar surface or perpendicular to it
