Preservation and Conservation of Yoruba Cultural Artifacts: The Place of Nigerian Libraries and Archives

    Get PDF
There had been losses of a lot of invaluable Yoruba cultural artefacts and sources of oral information to ignorance, inferno, burglary, and sabotage, biological and chemical "attackers" and to other forms and agents of annihilation. Some of these losses are avoidable and therefore preventable. These avoidable losses have had and will continue to have unquantifiable effects on the rich and cherished traditional values because the richness of the Yoruba cultural values is not unconnected with their cultural artefacts and oral information. The paper briefly examines the origin of Yoruba race and chronicles the history and growth of libraries and their antecedents - writing and printing. Besides, the concerns of this paper are the subjects of preservation and conservation and the dangers inherent in the insecurity of the traditional artefacts. Recommendations that could improve the situation, especially by addressing the problems of gross under-utilization of opportunities provided by libraries and archives in the preservation and conservation of Yoruba artefacts and oral information were offered

Categorial Status of Yoruba Attributive Modifiers

    Get PDF
This paper re-examines claims in the literature that Yoruba attributive words such as dúdú black’, pupa ‘red’, funfun ‘white’, etc., which function as modifiers of N, are adjectives. It provides data and analytic evidence to show that the items have the morphology and syntax of nominals. The fact that the items in question have the syntactic distribution and morphology of nouns; semantically refer to attributive features such as colour, size, quantity, etc. of concrete nouns; and sometimes function as verbs with the same phonetic forms informs the conclusion that they are not canonic adjectives but derived nouns converted to verbs and possibly adjectives, respectively, via a N→V/A conversion process. It equally argues that forms like burĂșkĂș ‘bad’ and wĂ© ÌŁĂ© ÌŁrĂ© ÌŁâ€˜small (-bits)’are morpho-syntactically fused compounds consisting of verb + degree adverb

    Prepositions in IgĂĄlĂ

    Get PDF
Previous studies on Igala grammar are unanimous on the claim that the language employs body parts, place nouns, and certain verbs as prepositions. This study questions the claim from both syntactic and semantic points of view and argues to the contrary that the items analysed as body parts and/or place prepositions are N1 spatial nouns in an [N1 N2] genitive phrase complement of preposition in a structural context where the preposition head is phonetically spelt-out null in the syntax. Given its exclusive locative-goal denotation, the paper argues that tĂș in contexts like tĂș unyĂ un ‘to his/her house’ is a lexicalization of preposition in IgĂĄlĂ

No place to hide: contemporary Scottish theatre and postcoloniality

    Get PDF
The thesis is an examination of the connection between politics, culture and the contemporary practice of theatre in Scotland. It looks at Scottish history in the context of the nation's incorporation into the British Union and results in dramatic texts and performances. The reason for this is because Scotland presents an unusual picture of a postcolonial cultural space. The study uses the combination of postcolonial, cultural and performance theories to investigate this connection. Chapter One is devoted to the cultural sociology of Scotland. It examines the political and social contexts of the national culture, its components and how the interaction between politics and culture occurs. The chapter concludes by pointing out that this interaction frames the postcolonial framework of the country.Chapter Two examines how the remaking of cultural identity in Scotland is carried out within the postcolonial framework, and how this is reflected in the spheres of representation. The chapter proposes two models of identity conceptualisation; addresses the centrality of language and the roles it plays in the cultural remaking of the subjective national-self. The chapter also examines the nature and character of theatrical practice in Scotland, and concludes that while its activities occur within a postcolonial framework, Scottish theatre fits into the paradigm of a national-popular theatre. This chapter uses dramatic and performance theories to define popular theatre, its conceptual boundaries and functions.Chapter Three analyses four play texts, which are deemed to portray some aspects of the contingent origin of Scotland's postcolonial identity. These are plays modelled on history. The chapter later addresses the issue of genre, which is raised implicitly by the analysed plays. It concludes that in the wake of the performance of postcolonial subjectivity, postcolonial theatre usually breaks the genre barrier.Chapter Four continues the analysis of texts. A text that addresses the composite character of Scottish postcoloniality is examined. The thesis contests the attempts by the text to resituate the meaning of the 'composite' as a subject of class analysis. As a result of that attempt, there were tensions generated in the 'reception' of the performance of the text. The chapter concludes by stressing that the tension illustrates the character of postcolonial embodiment in performances.Chapter Five addresses another set of texts. These are the realist plays. The chapter looks at the meaning and practice of realism in the Scottish contexts. The chapter justifies realism as enabling a representation of national subjectivity from a perspective that other forms of theatre would have made less visible. The conclusion summarises the theoretical questions of the thesis. The thesis concludes by pointing out that theatre is one of the areas of representation where it is frequently shown that Scotland is a postcolonial cultural space

    Get PDF
After sixteen years of democratic hiatus in Nigeria, the nation abrogated military governance and embraced democratic system of governance since 1999. However, it is observed that political participation is largely limited to voting, while political apathy is also witnessed during elections. Scholars have attributed this subject political participation to lack of political socialization. While several studies had dwelt on other agents of political socialization, few had ventured into researches on investigating religious organisations as agents Using a multistage sampling technique, a survey involving 540 participants. selected from the eighteen local governments of Ondo State who were given Likert Scaled questionnaires with a Cronbach Alpha measurement of range 0.65 and 0.79, supplied their perceptions on the issue of study. From their responses, the study garnered that submits that most leaders of the various religious organizations were largely aware of the various political happenings in the country, actively engaged in the political education and socialization of religious adherents. The study concludes that religious organizations act as political socialization agents but needs to engage in more enlightenment programmes that would encourage more and higher levels of political participation by religious adherents

    Get PDF
Polymers are widely used in oil and gas industry for a range of petroleum production applications. Their viscoelastic and solution thickening properties have particularly made them a chemical of choice for petroleum production applications. This entry explores and discusses various types of polymers used in the oil and gas industry for petroleum production applications. It focusses on chemical treatment optimization, water shutoff for enhanced hydrocarbon production and reduced water production, and enhanced oil recovery, and provides a treatise of rheological characterization methods and models for these polymers
