Hospital Mergers with Regulated Prices
We study the effects of a hospital merger in a spatial competition framework where semi-altruistic hospitals choose quality and cost-containment effort. Whereas a merger always leads to higher average cost efficiency, the effect on quality provision depends on the strategic nature of quality competition, which in turn depends on the degree of altruism and the effectiveness of cost-containment effort. If qualities are strategic complements, then a merger leads to lower quality for all hospitals. If qualities are strategic substitutes, then a merger leads to higher quality for at least one hospital, and might also yield higher average quality provision and increased patient utility
A construction of Frobenius manifolds with logarithmic poles and applications
A construction theorem for Frobenius manifolds with logarithmic poles is
established. This is a generalization of a theorem of Hertling and Manin. As an
application we prove a generalization of the reconstruction theorem of
Kontsevich and Manin for projective smooth varieties with convergent
Gromov-Witten potential. A second application is a construction of Frobenius
manifolds out of a variation of polarized Hodge structures which degenerates
along a normal crossing divisor when certain generation conditions are
fulfilled.Comment: 46 page
Modified Partition Functions, Consistent Anomalies and Consistent Schwinger Terms
A gauge invariant partition function is defined for gauge theories which
leads to the standard quantization. It is shown that the descent equations and
consequently the consistent anomalies and Schwinger terms can be extracted from
this modified partition function naturally.Comment: 25 page

Wave operator bounds for 1-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators with singular potentials and applications
Boundedness of wave operators for Schr\"odinger operators in one space
dimension for a class of singular potentials, admitting finitely many Dirac
delta distributions, is proved. Applications are presented to, for example,
dispersive estimates and commutator bounds.Comment: 16 pages, 0 figure
Existence and Stability of Standing Pulses in Neural Networks : I Existence
We consider the existence of standing pulse solutions of a neural network
integro-differential equation. These pulses are bistable with the zero state
and may be an analogue for short term memory in the brain. The network consists
of a single-layer of neurons synaptically connected by lateral inhibition. Our
work extends the classic Amari result by considering a non-saturating gain
function. We consider a specific connectivity function where the existence
conditions for single-pulses can be reduced to the solution of an algebraic
system. In addition to the two localized pulse solutions found by Amari, we
find that three or more pulses can coexist. We also show the existence of
nonconvex ``dimpled'' pulses and double pulses. We map out the pulse shapes and
maximum firing rates for different connection weights and gain functions.Comment: 31 pages, 29 figures, submitted to SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical

Fourier, Gauss, Fraunhofer, Porod and the Shape from Moments Problem
We show how the Fourier transform of a shape in any number of dimensions can
be simplified using Gauss's law and evaluated explicitly for polygons in two
dimensions, polyhedra three dimensions, etc. We also show how this combination
of Fourier and Gauss can be related to numerous classical problems in physics
and mathematics. Examples include Fraunhofer diffraction patterns, Porods law,
Hopfs Umlaufsatz, the isoperimetric inequality and Didos problem. We also use
this approach to provide an alternative derivation of Davis's extension of the
Motzkin-Schoenberg formula to polygons in the complex plane.Comment: 21 pages, no figure
