    In book 5 of the Iliad Sarpedon suffers so greatly from a wound that his ā€˜ā€˜ĻˆĻ…Ļ‡Ī® leaves himā€™. Rather than dying, however, Sarpedon lives to fight another day. This paper investigates the phrase Ļ„į½øĪ½ Ī“į½² Ī»ĪÆĻ€Īµ ĻˆĻ…Ļ‡Ī® in extant archaic Greek poetry to gain a sense of its traditional referentiality and better assess the meaning of Sarpedonā€™s swoon. Finding that all other instances of the ĻˆĻ…Ļ‡Ī® leaving the body signify death, it suggests that the Iliad exploits a traditional unit of utterance to flag up the importance of Sarpedon to this version of the Troy story

    We describe a 3^{3}He-129^{129}Xe comagnetometer operating in stemless anodically bonded cells with a 6 mm3^3 volume and a 129^{129}Xe spin coherence time of 300 sec. We use a 87^{87}Rb pulse-train magnetometer with co-linear pump and probe beams to study the nuclear spin frequency shifts caused by spin polarization of 3^{3}He. By systematically varying the cell geometry in a batch cell fabrication process we can separately measure the cell shape dependent and independent frequency shifts. We find that a certain aspect ratio of the cylindrical cell can cancel the effects of 3^3He magnetization that limit the stability of vapor-cell comagnetometers. Using this control we also observe for the first time a scalar 3^{3}He-129^{129}Xe collisional frequency shift characterized by an enhancement factor ĪŗHeXe=āˆ’0.011Ā±0.001\kappa_{\text{HeXe}} = -0.011\pm0.001.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Patient demand on sexual health services (SHS) in the UK is so high that many services have introduced online screening to accommodate more patients. There are concerns that these services may not be accessible to all. This service evaluation was undertaken to determine whether online screening is accessible by those patients most at need by comparing the demographics and number of asymptomatic chlamydial infections detected online and in clinic. No difference was found in the age nor level of deprivation, demonstrating that online services are an accessible way to screen for STIs without overburdening established services

    In the experiments reported here, children chose either to maintain their initial belief about an object's identity or to accept the experimenter's contradicting suggestion. Both 3ā€“ to 4ā€“yearā€“olds and 4ā€“ to 5ā€“yearā€“olds were good at accepting the suggestion only when the experimenter was better informed than they were (implicit source monitoring). They were less accurate at recalling both their own and the experimenter's information access (explicit recall of experience), though they performed well above chance. Children were least accurate at reporting whether their final belief was based on what they were told or on what they experienced directly (explicit source monitoring). Contrasting results emerged when children decided between contradictory suggestions from two differentially informed adults: Threeā€“ to 4ā€“yearā€“olds were more accurate at reporting the knowledge source of the adult they believed than at deciding which suggestion was reliable. Decision making in this observation task may require reflective understanding akin to that required for explicit source judgments when the child participates in the task

    Gait Analysis of Teenagers and Young Adults Diagnosed with Autism & Severe Verbal Communication Disorders

    Both movement differences and disorders are common within autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These differences have wide and heterogeneous variability among different ages and sub-groups all diagnosed with ASD. Gait was studied in a more homogeneously identified group of nine teenagers and young adults who scored as ā€œsevereā€ in both measures of verbal communication and overall rating of Autism on the Childhood Autism Rating Scales (CARS). The ASD individuals were compared to a group of typically developing university undergraduates of similar ages. All participants walked a distance of 6-meters across a GAITRite (GR) electronic walkway for six trials. The ASD and comparison groups differed widely on many spatiotemporal aspects of gait including: step and stride length, foot positioning, cadence, velocity, step time, gait cycle time, swing time, stance time, and single and double support time. Moreover, the two groups differed in the percentage of the total gait cycle in each of these phases. The qualitative rating of ā€œBody Useā€ on the CARS also indicated severe levels of unusual body movement for all of the ASD participants. These findings demonstrate that older teens and young adults with ā€œsevereā€ forms of Verbal Communication Impairments and Autism differ widely in their gait from typically developing individuals. The differences found in the current investigation are far more pronounced compared to previous findings with younger and/or less severely involved individuals diagnosed with ASD as compared to typically developing controls. As such, these data may be a useful anchor-point in understanding the trajectory of development of gait specifically and motor functions generally.
