Efficient data representation for XML in peer-based systems
Purpose - New directions in the provision of end-user computing experiences mean that the best way to share data between small mobile computing devices needs to be determined. Partitioning large structures so that they can be shared efficiently provides a basis for data-intensive applications on such platforms. The partitioned structure can be compressed using dictionary-based approaches and then directly queried without firstly decompressing the whole structure. Design/methodology/approach - The paper describes an architecture for partitioning XML into structural and dictionary elements and the subsequent manipulation of the dictionary elements to make the best use of available space. Findings - The results indicate that considerable savings are available by removing duplicate dictionaries. The paper also identifies the most effective strategy for defining dictionary scope. Research limitations/implications - This evaluation is based on a range of benchmark XML structures and the approach to minimising dictionary size shows benefit in the majority of these. Where structures are small and regular, the benefits of efficient dictionary representation are lost. The authors' future research now focuses on heuristics for further partitioning of structural elements. Practical implications - Mobile applications that need access to large data collections will benefit from the findings of this research. Traditional client/server architectures are not suited to dealing with high volume demands from a multitude of small mobile devices. Peer data sharing provides a more scalable solution and the experiments that the paper describes demonstrate the most effective way of sharing data in this context. Social implications - Many services are available via smartphone devices but users are wary of exploiting the full potential because of the need to conserve battery power. The approach mitigates this challenge and consequently expands the potential for users to benefit from mobile information systems. This will have impact in areas such as advertising, entertainment and education but will depend on the acceptability of file sharing being extended from the desktop to the mobile environment. Originality/value - The original work characterises the most effective way of sharing large data sets between small mobile devices. This will save battery power on devices such as smartphones, thus providing benefits to users of such devices
Rotational Dynamics of Organic Cations in CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite
Methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) based solar cells have shown
impressive power conversion efficiencies of above 20%. However, the microscopic
mechanism of the high photovoltaic performance is yet to be fully understood.
Particularly, the dynamics of CH3NH3+ cations and their impact on relevant
processes such as charge recombination and exciton dissociation are still
poorly understood. Here, using elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering
techniques and group theoretical analysis, we studied rotational modes of the
CH3NH3+ cation in CH3NH3PbI3. Our results show that, in the cubic (T > 327K)
and tetragonal (165K < T < 327K) phases, the CH3NH3+ ions exhibit four-fold
rotational symmetry of the C-N axis (C4) along with three-fold rotation around
the C-N axis (C3), while in orthorhombic phase (T < 165K) only C3 rotation is
present. Around room temperature, the characteristic relaxation times for the
C4 rotation is found to be ps while for the C3 rotation ps. The -dependent
rotational relaxation times were fitted with Arrhenius equations to obtain
activation energies. Our data show a close correlation between the C4
rotational mode and the temperature dependent dielectric permittivity. Our
findings on the rotational dynamics of CH3NH3+ and the associated dipole have
important implications on understanding the low exciton binding energy and slow
charge recombination rate in CH3NH3PbI3 which are directly relevant for the
high solar cell performance
Charmonium Spectrum on dynamical anisotropic lattices
We present a first study of the charmonium spectrum on N_f=2 dynamical,
anisotropic lattices. We take advantage of all-to-all quark propagators to
build spatially extended interpolating operators to increase the overlap with
states not easily accessible with point propagators such as radially excited
states of eta_c, psi, and chi_c, D-waves and hybrid states.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, Lattice 2005 Conferenc
The Young, Massive, Star Cluster Sandage-96 After the Explosion of SN 2004dj in NGC 2403
The bright Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004dj occurred within the young,
massive stellar cluster Sandage-96 in a spiral arm of NGC 2403. New
multi-wavelength observations obtained with several ground-based and
space-based telescopes are combined to study the radiation from Sandage-96
after SN 2004dj faded away. Sandage-96 started to dominate the flux in the
optical bands starting September 2006 (~800 d after explosion). The optical
fluxes are equal to the pre-explosion ones within the observational
uncertainties. An optical Keck spectrum obtained ~900 d after explosion shows
the dominant blue continuum from the cluster stars shortward of 6000 \AA as
well as strong SN nebular emission lines redward. The integrated spectral
energy distribution (SED) of the cluster has been extended into the ultraviolet
region by archival XMM-Newton and new Swift observations, and compared with
theoretical models. The outer parts of the cluster have been resolved by the
Hubble Space Telescope, allowing the construction of a color-magnitude diagram.
The fitting of the cluster SED with theoretical isochrones results in cluster
ages between 10--40 Myr, depending on metallicity and the model family. The
isochrone fitting indicates that the resolved part of the cluster has a bimodal
age distribution: a younger population at ~10--16 Myr, and an older one at
~32--100 Myr which is similar to the age distribution of the nearby field
stars. These stars may have been captured from the field during the cluster
formation. The young age of Sandage-96 suggest 12 < M_prog < 20 M_\odot as the
most probable mass range for the progenitor of SN 2004dj. This is consistent
with, but perhaps slightly higher than, most of the other Type II-plateau SN
progenitor masses determined so far.Comment: accepted in Ap
Children's suggestibility in relation to their understanding about sources of knowledge
In the experiments reported here, children chose either to maintain their initial belief about an object's identity or to accept the experimenter's contradicting suggestion. Both 3â to 4âyearâolds and 4â to 5âyearâolds were good at accepting the suggestion only when the experimenter was better informed than they were (implicit source monitoring). They were less accurate at recalling both their own and the experimenter's information access (explicit recall of experience), though they performed well above chance. Children were least accurate at reporting whether their final belief was based on what they were told or on what they experienced directly (explicit source monitoring). Contrasting results emerged when children decided between contradictory suggestions from two differentially informed adults: Threeâ to 4âyearâolds were more accurate at reporting the knowledge source of the adult they believed than at deciding which suggestion was reliable. Decision making in this observation task may require reflective understanding akin to that required for explicit source judgments when the child participates in the task
Fractal Dimensions in Perceptual Color Space: A Comparison Study Using Jackson Pollock's Art
The fractal dimensions of color-specific paint patterns in various Jackson
Pollock paintings are calculated using a filtering process which models
perceptual response to color differences (\Lab color space). The advantage of
the \Lab space filtering method over traditional RGB spaces is that the
former is a perceptually-uniform (metric) space, leading to a more consistent
definition of ``perceptually different'' colors. It is determined that the RGB
filtering method underestimates the perceived fractal dimension of lighter
colored patterns but not of darker ones, if the same selection criteria is
applied to each. Implications of the findings to Fechner's 'Principle of the
Aesthetic Middle' and Berlyne's work on perception of complexity are discussed.Comment: 21 pp LaTeX; two postscript figure
The Relationship Between Belief and Credence
Sometimes epistemologists theorize about belief, a tripartite attitude on which one can believe, withhold belief, or disbelieve a proposition. In other cases, epistemologists theorize about credence, a fine-grained attitude that represents oneâs subjective probability or confidence level toward a proposition. How do these two attitudes relate to each other? This article explores the relationship between belief and credence in two categories: descriptive and normative. It then explains the broader significance of the belief-credence connection and concludes with general lessons from the debate thus far
Sulfur isotope fractionation during oxidation of sulfur dioxide: gas-phase oxidation by OH radicals and aqueous oxidation by H2O2, O3 and iron catalysis
The oxidation of SO[subscript 2] to sulfate is a key reaction in determining the role of sulfate in the environment through its effect on aerosol size distribution and composition. Sulfur isotope analysis has been used to investigate sources and chemical processes of sulfur dioxide and sulfate in the atmosphere, however interpretation of measured sulfur isotope ratios is challenging due to a lack of reliable information on the isotopic fractionation involved in major transformation pathways. This paper presents laboratory measurements of the fractionation factors for the major atmospheric oxidation reactions for SO2: Gas-phase oxidation by OH radicals, and aqueous oxidation by H[subscript 2]O[subscript 2], O[subscript 3] and a radical chain reaction initiated by iron. The measured fractionation factor for [superscript 34]S/[superscript 32]S during the gas-phase reaction is α[subscript OH] = (1.0089±0.0007)â((4±5)Ă10[subscript â5]) T(°C). The measured fractionation factor for [superscript 34]S/[superscript 32]S during aqueous oxidation by H[subscript 2]O[subscript 2] or O[subscript 3] is α[subscript aq] = (1.0167±0.0019)â((8.7±3.5) Ă10[superscript â5])T(°C). The observed fractionation during oxidation by H2O2 and O3 appeared to be controlled primarily by protonation and acid-base equilibria of S(IV) in solution, which is the reason that there is no significant difference between the fractionation produced by the two oxidants within the experimental error. The isotopic fractionation factor from a radical chain reaction in solution catalysed by iron is αFe = (0.9894±0.0043) at 19 °C for [superscript 34]S/[superscript 32]S. Fractionation was mass-dependent with regards to 33S/32S for all the reactions investigated. The radical chain reaction mechanism was the only measured reaction that had a faster rate for the light isotopes. The results presented in this study will be particularly useful to determine the importance of the transition metal-catalysed oxidation pathway compared to other oxidation pathways, but other main oxidation pathways can not be distinguished based on stable sulfur isotope measurements alone
