The college role in diminishing the digital divide gender gap: Assessment of male vs. female computer access and use

    Get PDF
Higher education has been allied with the computer industry since the advent of the personal computer. In the past, an anomalous gap has been found to generally exist between males and females in the United States regarding the access and use of computers. The purpose of this study is to review research regarding college student computer access for males and females. The report will also examine computer ownership based on examination of the results of a college-based survey, as well as by comparisons to past and present technology ownership trends. While a number of colleges have published reports on the progress of their technological initiatives, few publish gender data in regard to the state of computer ownership or college supported access today in order to continue to monitor important digital divide trends. The findings of this study suggest that colleges and universities offering low-cost options for computer use, purchase or lease, and Internet access are critical in suppressing the gender gap

Can Nollywood Save Nigerian Children from an Impending Mass Society?

    Get PDF
The mass society theory presents the media as a predator that would eventually eat up the culture and ethos of a society where it operates (McQuail, 2005). Today‟s children are being fostered by the new media, more or less, rather than the family or society. They are a product of the media and they know only little of „their culture‟ as more and more families are gaining access to digital pay TV, Internet and its array of social media networks. These media give children and young adults analmost limitless exposure to all sorts of program beamed through the satellite from around the world. Children are finding the „new media‟ as sweet escape from the „boring‟, „old school‟ state-owned TV which propagate relatively better, the Nigerian culture. This paper argues that thehuge popularity of the home video media in Nigeria can be used to stem the negative effects of mass culture and mass society. But there is still a huge challenge regarding contents to which the paper recommends ten proactive measures. Keywords: Mass society, mass culture, mediated media influence, mean world syndrome

In realisation of the very strategic role of international trade to her economy, Nigeria has since in- dependence in 1960 adopted various policy measures to boost her foreign trade and to expand her external market. The country has adopted certain regulatory measures to change the directional pattern of her foreign trade. Such measures which are also often aimed at other policy objectives (like balance of payments., protection and revenue) include tariff changes, exchange control and quantitative control in form of import quota or complete ban

The Economic Role of Nigeria’s Subsistence Agriculture in the Transition Process: Implications for Rural Development

    Get PDF
This study examined the role of subsistence-oriented agriculture in Nigeria in the 1990s to 2000s. The start out by discussing the diverging economic effects of the growth of subsistence agriculture in Nigeria since the transition process started. The quantitative analysis of this sector’s role is carried out by means of an applied Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model applying a 1994 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) as base year data. The innovation of the article is to disaggregate primary agricultural production not by products but by farm types, which enables us to distinguish their institutional and economic characteristics. The study simulates two Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the government. The results of the post SAP period highlight that Nigeria’s subsistence agriculture was an important shock absorber against further agricultural output declines during transition. A simulation, which looks into the effects of a devaluation of the Nigeria Naira, shows that the financial crisis should have increased the relative competitiveness particularly of large-scale crop farms versus small-scale farms. The reforms of successive governments show that efficiency enhancing institutional change would benefit both large-scale and small-scale farms. However, within small-scale agriculture, a shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture would take place.Subsistence agriculture, CGE model, Exchange rate, Institutional Development, Structural Constraints, Nigeria, Community/Rural/Urban Development,

A MODIFIED ‘METHOD COMBINATION THERAPY’ AS INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY FOR TEACHING SECONDARY SCHOOL GEOMETRY AND EFFECTS ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND RETENTION IN MATHEMATICS

This study investigated the effects of teachers’ use of a modified Method Combination Therapy whose components include multiple activities and the use of study questions as instructional strategy for teaching geometry, on secondary school students’ achievement and retention of learned concepts. Four research questions and four research hypotheses guided the study. The design was quasi-experimental with a population size of 3400 Senior Secondary One (SS1) students. The s ample size was 72 comprising 40 males and 32 females in intact classes. A researcher made Mathematics Performance Test (MPT) with reliability coefficient r =.87 was used for data collection using Kuder-Richardson 21 formula. Data was analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANOVA) and the hypotheses tested at p ≤ .05. Findings revealed that the modified Method Combination Therapy (MCT) adopted in the experiment significantly enhanced students’ achievement and retention of acquired knowledge of geometry over time. Consequently, it was recommended among others that teachers in schools could adopt the modified MCT for the teaching of geometry in schools

The paper examined the emergence and nature of the police with the various legal frameworks for the establishment and functions of the police in Nigeria with a view to assessing its meaning, foundation and scope as well as its essence and limits. These were with a view to undertaking holistic analysis and appraisal of the nature and extent of jurisdictional essence of policing Nigeria The study relied on primary and secondary sources of information. The primary source included unstructured interviews with relevant authorities, judicial decisions, statutory provisions establishing and providing functions for the Nigeria Police Force and rudimentary policing in Nigeria. The secondary source of information included books, journal articles, conference proceedings, newspaper publications and the internet. Information received was subjected to content analysis. The study found that the police is founded on a three-scope essence of (i) protection of life and property, (ii) maintenance of law and order and (iii) enhancing the administration of justice and that though enormous powers were conceded to the Nigeria Police for effective performance of its duties, police ineffectiveness mainly accounted for proliferation of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria. The study concluded and recommended that the issues of inadequate funding, lack of collaborative support and delineation of the various overlapping functions by other law enforcement agencies must be properly addressed if the Nigeria Police would be destined to fulfill its constitutional role to the best advantage of the people.
