Leading particles and diffractive spectra in the Interacting Gluon Model

    Get PDF
We discuss the leading particle spectra and diffractive mass spectra from the novel point of view, namely by treating them as particular examples of the general energy flow phenomena taking place in the multiparticle production processes. We argue that they show a high degree of universality what allows for their simple description in terms of the Interacting Gluon Model developed by us some time ago.Comment: Presented at Diffraction2002, Alushta, Crimea (Ukraina), August 31 - September 5, 2002. To be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers (2003) (necessary style files attached). Rewritten according to the Kluwer specification

vaccination in a patient with Behcet's disease

Case report: A 25-year-old man with Behcet's disease was admitted because of weakness of the lower limbs and difficulty in urination. He had received a rabies vaccination 2 months previous because he had been bitten by a dog.Findings: Clinical and laboratory findings supported acute transverse myelitis. A hyperintense lesion and expansion at the level of conus medullaris was detected on spinal magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Although neurologic involvement is one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in Behcet's disease, the factors that aggravate the involvement of the nervous system are still unclear. Vaccination may have been the factor that had activated autoimmune mechanisms in this case. To our knowledge, involvement of the conus medullaris in Behcet's disease after rabies vaccination has not been reported

Waste Concrete as a Source of Aggregate for New Concrete

    Get PDF
Three concrete mixes of widely differing water cement ratios were made using crushed waste concrete as coarse aggregate. The properties investigated include the physical properties of the recycled aggregate, the compressive and flexural strengths of the concrete. These properties were compared with those of similar concrete specimens made with conventional natural aggregate. Also tested was the compressive strength of concrete cubes cut from the waste concrete. Results of the tests suggest that the strength of concrete made from recycled waste concrete aggregate is dependent on the strength of the original concrete from which the recycled aggregate is derived. It is concluded that recycled aggregate can be used to produce quality concrete when the strength of concrete required is not greater than the strength of the original concrete from which the recycled aggregate is derived

Process of Assuring Quality in Counselling at the National Open University of Nigeria: A Critique

    Get PDF
Provision of counselling services in open and distance education remains one of the best intervention strategies aimed at improving the capacity of every student to develop oneself and also to overcome numerous obstacles that may impinge on the process to successful completion of his or her programme. The process of providing these counselling services in an open university is not without inherent difficulties. This paper critiques the counselling process at the National Open University of Nigeria and possibly identifies impediments militating against effective, efficient and positive impact of therapeutic process on the clients. The paper also identifies areas in the therapeutic processes and procedures that need continuous rigorous research and documentation. The main aim of such research is to explore the possibilities of making the process of counselling interaction more learner centred, learner friendly and quality assured using Six Sigma Quality Assurance model. The paper therefore discusses the concept of open and distance education, alongside with the mission statement of NOUN, learner support services used in counselling or therapeutic services as it operates in ODL and in NOUN, media of counselling, challenges of guidance service delivery in NOUN and makes incisive recommendations on how to improve guidance service delivery.Key words: Process, assuring quality, counselling, NOUN, critique, Six Sigma, philosoph

“Africanizing” A Modern African Art History Curriculum from the Perspectives of an Insider

    Get PDF
Until recent, the lack of perception that dogged the early study of traitional art by members of Western culture seem to have reappeared in the study or (non study) of modern African art. Currently, modern African art is engaging the attention of western art historians’ scholarly enquiry. However, there is a need for a well educated and articulate art historical practice to develop all over Africa, if the pre-conceived neo-colonial and xenophobic attitudes of some western curators and scholars must be addressed. Besides, African terminologies and nomenclatures, words, classification and definition of terms are necessary for African situations and experiences. Some questions are tackled in this paper such as; what aspects of the existing African art history are problematic? Why is the need to Africanize African Art history? Whose insider perspective is the focus of the paper? “Africanizing” a modern African Art History Curriculum’ as used in this paper refers to the needed reformation in the current African art history practice and study in the tertiary institutions towards a progressive, developmental and Africa centred art history. It is about evolving a contemporary African art history that is historical, unbiased and factual about Afric

Web Portal Usability among Nigerian University Students: A Case Study of University Of Benin, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The web portal technology by Nigerian universities was adopted as a way to help curb one of the burdens of university’s principal managerial operations: “students’ academic management”. This study evaluates usability or "ease of use" of University of Benin (UNIBEN) web portal from the students’ holistic view through the four usability constructs (interface and information quality, system usefulness and overall satisfaction) of the developed Web Portal Usability Success (WEBPUS) Model. It  revealed that the informative features and usefulness of the web portal system has not encouraged students’ usability behaviour due to the portal’s inefficiencies to effectively  and satisfactorily achieve a range of specified or completed tasks irrespective of their competences in basic computer and internet capabilities.http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v33i2.

Woman Wisdom and the ethical vision of the book of Proverbs: An African reflection

    Get PDF
An observable gap in scholarship is a comprehensive ethical reflection on the portrayal of wisdom as feminine in the book of Proverbs and its implication for wisdom ethics. Besides this lacuna is the  observation that the few existing studies on the ethics of the book of Proverbs take their point of departure essentially from a Western conception of ethics. This article has approached the book of Proverbs from an ethical perspective and has argued that the African view of ethics has a rich quality embedded in communitarian values that can be explored heuristically to interpret the ethical vision of the book of Proverbs. Such an approach, it is suggested, has pedagogical relevance to the teaching of biblical ethics especially in Africa

The Potentials of Cassava Flour as a Set-Retarding Admixture in Concrete

    Get PDF
The potentials of cassava flour as a set-retarding admixture in concrete were investigated. Concrete mix proportion of 1:2:4 by weight of cement, sand and coarse aggregate and, water/cement ratio of 0.46 was made with six different dosage levels of cassava flour as admixture. The properties tested include setting time, workability of the fresh concrete and compressive strength of the hardened concrete. These properties were compared with those of similar concrete mix made without cassava flour admixture. It was observed that cassava flour considerably improved the workability of the fresh concrete and delayed the setting time of cement by up to 6 hours. Results of the tests also show that while cassava flour reduced the early strength of concrete, the long-term strength was improved. Cassava flour dosage level of 3% was also found to be the optimum level of addition of the admixture
