Coins and cultural contact: adoption and use of metal coins by non-Greeks in ancient Calabria (6th- 5th centuries BC.)

We are all familiar with the main questions involved in the adoption and use of coined metal by the Greeks back in the 6th-5th centuries BC; questions such as the steps in the expansion in the Mediterranean area of the habit of coining; abstract value and concrete value; intrinsic value and “fiduciarity” of coined money and so forth. In this short paper, our intention is to focus attention on coin and metal finds in general (hoards, excavations, sporadic findings) in Southern Italy during the 8th- 5th centuries BC our case study intends to call attention to the ways of contact between the apoikiai and non-Greeks communities showing how the expansion of coinage promoted cultural change in this area and period specially as far as the notion of value goes.Estamos todos familiarizados com as principais questões envolvidas na adoção e uso de metal cunhado pelos gregos nos séculos VI-V a.C.: questões como as etapas na expansão do hábito de cunhar na área do Mediterrâneo; valor abstrato e valor concreto; valor intrínseco e fiduciaridade do dinheiro cunhado; reciprocidade e sistemas econômicos de mercado e assim por diante. Concentrando a atenção nas descobertas de moedas (tesouros, escavações, achados esporádicos) acreditamos poder chamar a atenção sobre as muitas formas de contato entre as apoikiai e as comunidades não-gregas e mostrar como as moedas agiam como agentes de mudança cultural

Este texto aborda a mudança cultural na Grécia antiga pelo viés da análise de um documento arqueológico específico, a moeda. O objetivo é demonstrar como a adoção da moeda pelos gregos reflete mudanças políticas, sociais e econômicas importantes e é ao mesmo tempo elemento transformador da sociedade.This text approaches cultural change in Ancient Greece through the analysis of a specific artifact, coin. Our purpose is to demonstrate that the adoption of coinage by the Greeks mirrors deep transformations in society as a whole. At the same time it is our aim to make clear the way coinage itself soon became an important vehicle for these changes

Anotações sobre a representação de monstros nas moedas gregas.

Se quisermos compreender o caráter da moeda na Antiguidade grega é indispensável que a analisemos sob diferentes pontos de vista. Com efeito, a moeda além de instrumento de troca e de medida de valor, participava de um conjunto mais amplo de objetos impregnados de funções mágicas ou religiosas. A própria imagem escolhida como tipo monetário, subjazia um caráter apotropaico - “alexíkakos”- que ao fixar uma energia divina invocava proteção. Neste sentido, a representação de monstros atuava como uma fixação de poderes maléficos de sorte a anulá-los, de acordo com o princípio da magia simpática de que “o símile bane o símile” . Por outro lado, como objeto, a moeda poderia funcionar como amuleto, se pendurada ao pescoço. Quando deixada em locais sagrados, cumpria a função de aplacar alguma divindade de sorte a dar proteção ao ofertante.If we wish to understand the true character of Greek coins, we are forced to consider it under its several aspects. Besides being a measure of value and an instrument for exchange, coins belonged to a whole set of objects used with magical and/or religious purposes. First of all, we can consider coin types apotropaic in a sense that they were not just plain representations but were expected to have a special efficiency. From this point of view, the representation of monsters would act as a means to fix the monster’s energy and at the same time fight it, under the general principle of sympathetic magic of “like banning like”. On the other hand, as objects, coins could be used as amulets and/or talismans, when hanged around the neck. Coins could also be offered in sacred places and thus be considered as a protective devices against eventual misfortunes
