In the 1830-1870 period, investment in slaves represented over 40% of a coffee plantation's total value; thus, labour setthe limits to the reproduction of the slave-based enterprise. An instrumentto analyse this reproduction is the demographic study of the slave population. This work studies types of social relationship that acted as strategies for perpetuating slavery, emphasizing the formation of slave families and slave ro^as (garden plots). Data from inventories indicate that over one third of the slaveholdings were organized into families with evidence showing that many slave families were preserved when slaves were sold or left as inheritance.Os limites da reprodução da empresa escravista se definem em relação à mão de obra já que, entre 1830-1870, o investimento em escravos representava mais de 40% do valor total da fazendo de café. A demografla escrava é vista como instrumento para a análise de reprodução deste sistema. Estudam-se as estratégias de convivência social para que a escravidão se perpetuasse, destacando-se a formação de famílias de cativos e roças de escravos. Os dados retirados de inventários post-mortem indicam que mais de 1/3 dos plantéis estavam organizados em famílias, com evidências de que muitas eram preservadas nas vendas ou partilhas de herança

O presente texto visa contextualizar as discussões relativas à ação do sujeito histórico e as dinâmicas frente aos sistemas normativos na construção da escrita da História. Para isso, iremos analisar o papel do sujeito como autor e a relação com o produto de seu trabalho. A título de estudo de caso, buscaremos dissecar a correspondência do colono mineiro Paulo Pereira de Souza, comerciante de secos e molhados que atuou na capitania de Minas Gerais nas décadas de 1750 e 1760. É, pois, a partir de Paulo Pereira que procuraremos identificar as variadas formas de narrativa e expressão, que naturalmente geram diferentes percepções do historiador.<br>The following article intends to contextualize the discussion about the actions of the historical individual, and the dynamics between him and the normative systems during the construction of History's writing. Therefore, we'll analyse the role of the individual as an author and his relation with the product of his work. As a case study we'll analyse the letters of the Minas Gerais settler Paulo Pereira de Souza, a grocery merchant who lived in Minas Gerais in the decades of 1750 and 1760. It is from Paulo Pereira's writing that we'll identify the various forms of narrative and expression that naturally generate the different perceptions of the historian
