Evidence for citation networks in studies of free-roaming cats: A case study using literature on TrapâNeuterâReturn (TNR)
TrapâNeuterâReturn and its variants (hereafter TNR) aims to control unowned cat populations. Papers on this topic form a useful case study of how how an area of literature grows, papers become influential, and citation networks form, influencing future study as well as public perceptions of the science. We analysed 145 TNR studies published 2002â2019. Common topics, identified by frequently used language, were population control, interactions with wildlife, disease transmission (including implications for pets, wildlife and humans), free-roaming cats, and feral and domestic cat management. One or more papers on each of these topics was judged influential because of high citations overall, high average citations/year, or frequent mentions in social media. Open Access papers were more influential in social media, raising greater public awareness than studies published in journals that were less accessible. While divergent views exist on a range of topics, the network analysis of the TNR literature indicated potential for forming self-reinforcing groups of authors. While it is encouraging that diverse views are expressed, there is a risk of reduced dialogue interactions between groups, potentially constraining dialogue to refine arguments, share information, or plan research. Journal editors could encourage communication by choosing reviewers from different camps to assess manuscripts and by asking authors to acknowledge alternative views
Subsidised by junk foods: factors influencing body condition in stray cats (Felis catus)
Domestic cats (Felis catus) are one of the most widely distributed and successful carnivores globally. While cats are popular pets, many unowned, âstrayâ cats live freely in anthropogenic environments at high densities where they make use of anthropogenic resources. These stray cats present a management challenge due to concerns about wildlife predation, pathogen transmission, public nuisance and threats to cat welfare (e.g. vehicle collisions). In Australia, there are few studies of strays compared with pet cats or feral cats (free-roaming cats in rural areas that are independent of resources provided by humans). To contribute original data about stray cat biology, the carcasses of 188 euthanised stray cats were collected from Perth, Western Australia. Cats were assessed for general health, age, reproduction, diet and gastrointestinal parasite biomass. The influence of cat demographics, collection location, season, parasite biomass, diet and history of supplemental feeding by people were tested against body condition. Overall, strays were physically healthy and reproductive, with few life-threatening injuries or macroscopic evidence of disease; however, helminths were extremely common (95% of cats) and pose a threat. Nearly 40% of strays consumed wildlife, including two species of endemic marsupial. Alarmingly, 57.5% of strays were scavenging vast amounts of refuse, including life-threatening items in volumes that blocked their gastrointestinal tracts. These findings illustrate that strays need to be removed from anthropogenic environments for their own health and welfare and to prevent continued breeding. Targeted control programmes should prioritise removal of cats from areas where refuse is common and where valued native fauna exist
Intensive adoption as a management strategy for unowned, urban cats: A case study of 25 years of trapâassessâresolve (TAR) in Auckland, New Zealand
Globally, unowned urban cats are a major concern because they may suffer from poor welfare and cause problems, including public health risks, nuisances, and urban wildlife predation. While management options are often presented as a choice between culling or trapâneuterâreturn (TNR), for 25 years, the Lonely Miaow (Inc.) charity in Auckland, New Zealand (hereafter LM), has used a third strategyâintensive adoption or trapâassessâresolve (TAR). As of 2019, of 14,611 unowned cats trapped, 64.2% were adopted, 22.2% were euthanized if unsocialised or in grave ill-health, 5.7% were neutered and returned to the site, and 7.9% had other outcomes, such as being transferred to other shelters. Adoption rates increased over this time, exceeding 80.0% in 2018 and 2019. The cost of processing each cat from capture to adoption rose from NZD 58 in 1999 to NZD 234 by 2017. Approximately 80% of colonies (sites where cats were trapped) were around residential areas. Approximately 22% of cats required veterinary treatment after capture; common ailments included respiratory infections, ringworm, dental problems, and trauma. Consistently, 52% of cats were young kittens (5 years old. TAR avoids euthanasia where possible. Its effectiveness would be enhanced by fewer abandonments of owned cats and kittens, fitting within integrated strategies for the control of unowned cats involving community education. Cat adoptions improve the welfare of cats and, with appropriate husbandry, should alleviate concerns about nuisances, public health, and attacks on wildlife or the cats themselves, essentially benefitting the community and the cats. This case study is relevant to other cities around the world that are seeking to manage unowned cats
Deconstructing 1S0 nucleon-nucleon scattering
A distorted-wave method is used to analyse nucleon-nucleon scattering in the
1S0 channel. Effects of one-pion exchange are removed from the empirical phase
shift to all orders by using a modified effective-range expansion. Two-pion
exchange is then subtracted in the distorted-wave Born approximation, with
matrix elements taken between scattering waves for the one-pion exchange
potential. The residual short-range interaction shows a very rapid energy
dependence for kinetic energies above about 100 MeV, suggesting that the
breakdown scale of the corresponding effective theory is only 270MeV. This may
signal the need to include the Delta resonance as an explicit degree of freedom
in order to describe scattering at these energies. An alternative strategy of
keeping the cutoff finite to reduce large, but finite, contributions from the

Nonlinear Parabolic Equations arising in Mathematical Finance
This survey paper is focused on qualitative and numerical analyses of fully
nonlinear partial differential equations of parabolic type arising in financial
mathematics. The main purpose is to review various non-linear extensions of the
classical Black-Scholes theory for pricing financial instruments, as well as
models of stochastic dynamic portfolio optimization leading to the
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. After suitable transformations, both
problems can be represented by solutions to nonlinear parabolic equations.
Qualitative analysis will be focused on issues concerning the existence and
uniqueness of solutions. In the numerical part we discuss a stable
finite-volume and finite difference schemes for solving fully nonlinear

Monitoring the degradation and the corrosion of naphthenic acids by electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and atomic force microscopy
AbstractAlthough the term ânaphthenic acidsâ was originally used to describe acids that contain naphthenic rings, today this term is used in a more general sense and refers to all components in the acid extractable fraction. In crude oil, naphthenic acids exist as a complex mixture of compounds with broad polydispersity with respect to both molecular weight and structure. There has been increasing interest in the naphthenic acids in crude oil because of the corrosion problems that cause during oil refining. Herein, two powerful analytical tools, negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, ESI(-)FT-ICR MS and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were combined to monitor the thermal degradation of naphthenic acids and their corrosion effects on AISI 1020 steel, respectively. Two different acidic crude oils (TAN=2.38 and 4.79mgKOHgâ1, and total sulfur=0.7993 and 1.0220wt%) have been submitted to thermal treatment at 280, 300 and 350°C during 2, 4 and 6h, and characterized by ESI(-)-FT-ICR MS, total acid number (TAN), and total sulfur. The AISI 1020 steel was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and AFM. Generally, heating the crude oil at 350°C in a period of 6h, it was observed that a high efficiency (â
80%) and selectivity of thermal decarboxylation process was monitored by decay of TAN (4.79â0.44mgKOHgâ1). ESI(-)-FT-ICR MS results showed that naphthenic acid species remained after the heating have DBE ranging 1â12 and carbon number from C15 to C45. AFM topographic profile evidenced that the naphthenic acid corrosion of the crude oil with TAN of 4.73mgKOHgâ1 on AISI 1020 steel was profoundly altered and a marked reduction in peak to peak height values (obtained by subtracting the value of the lowest peak by the highest peak in the topographic area examined). Optical images and microphotographs confirmed the presence of irregularities, characterizing the corrosion mechanism as pitting type. The naphthenic corrosion was also evidenced in samples with low TAN value (0.44mgKOHgâ1)
A renormalisation group approach to two-body scattering in the presence of long-range forces
We apply renormalisation-group methods to two-body scattering by a
combination of known long-range and unknown short-range potentials. We impose a
cut-off in the basis of distorted waves of the long-range potential and
identify possible fixed points of the short-range potential as this cut-off is
lowered to zero. The expansions around these fixed points define the power
countings for the corresponding effective field theories. Expansions around
nontrivial fixed points are shown to correspond to distorted-wave versions of
the effective-range expansion. These methods are applied to scattering in the
presence of Coulomb, Yukawa and repulsive inverse-square potentials.Comment: 22 pages (RevTeX), 4 figure
Melting and Dimensionality of the Vortex Lattice in Underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.60
Muon spin rotation measurements of the magnetic field distribution in the
vortex state of the oxygen deficient high-Tc superconductor YBa{2}Cu{3}O{6.60}
reveal a vortex-lattice melting transition at much lower temperature than that
in the fully oxygenated material. The transition is best described by a model
in which adjacent layers of ``pancake'' vortices decouple in the liquid phase.
Evidence is also found for a pinning-induced crossover from a solid 3D to
quasi-2D vortex lattice, similar to that observed in the highly anisotropic
superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu{2}O{8+y}.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 5 postscript file
Processing of ultrafine-size particulate metal matrix composites by advanced shear technology

A new rheo-processing method, the melt-conditioning high-pressure die-cast (MC-HPDC) process, has been developed for manufacturing near-net-shape components of high integrity. The MC-HPDC process adapts the well-established high shear dispersive mixing action of a twin-screw mechanism to the task of overcoming the cohesive force of the agglomerates under a high shear rate and high intensity of turbulence. This is followed by direct shaping of the slurry into near-net-shape components using an existing cold-chamber die-casting process. The results indicate that the MC-HPDC samples have a uniform distribution of ultrafine-sized SiC particles throughout the entire sample in the as-cast condition. Compared to those produced by conventional high-pressure die casting (HPDC), MC-HPDC samples have a much improved tensile strength and ductility.EP-SR
Colossal dielectric constants in transition-metal oxides
Many transition-metal oxides show very large ("colossal") magnitudes of the
dielectric constant and thus have immense potential for applications in modern
microelectronics and for the development of new capacitance-based
energy-storage devices. In the present work, we thoroughly discuss the
mechanisms that can lead to colossal values of the dielectric constant,
especially emphasising effects generated by external and internal interfaces,
including electronic phase separation. In addition, we provide a detailed
overview and discussion of the dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 and related
systems, which is today's most investigated material with colossal dielectric
constant. Also a variety of further transition-metal oxides with large
dielectric constants are treated in detail, among them the system La2-xSrxNiO4
where electronic phase separation may play a role in the generation of a
