Chandra X-ray Observation of a Mature Cloud-Shock Interaction in the Bright Eastern Knot Region of Puppis A
We present Chandra X-ray images and spectra of the most prominent cloud-shock
interaction region in the Puppis A supernova remnant. The Bright Eastern Knot
(BEK) has two main morphological components: (1) a bright compact knot that
lies directly behind the apex of an indentation in the eastern X-ray boundary
and (2) lying 1' westward behind the shock, a curved vertical structure (bar)
that is separated from a smaller bright cloud (cap) by faint diffuse emission.
Based on hardness images and spectra, we identify the bar and cap as a single
shocked interstellar cloud. Its morphology strongly resembles the ``voided
sphere'' structures seen at late times in Klein et al.'s experimental
simulations of cloud-shock interactions, when the crushing of the cloud by
shear instabilities is well underway. We infer an interaction time of roughly 3
cloud-crushing timescales, which translates to 2000-4000 years, based on the
X-ray temperature, physical size, and estimated expansion of the shocked cloud.
This is the first X-ray identified example of a cloud-shock interaction in this
advanced phase. Closer to the shock front, the X-ray emission of the compact
knot in the eastern part of the BEK region implies a recent interaction with
relatively denser gas, some of which lies in front of the remnant. The complex
spatial relationship of the X-ray emission of the compact knot to optical [O
III] emission suggests that there are multiple cloud interactions occurring

Revised Relativistic Hydrodynamical Model for Neutron-Star Binaries
We report on numerical results from a revised hydrodynamic simulation of
binary neutron-star orbits near merger. We find that the correction recently
identified by Flanagan significantly reduces but does not eliminate the
neutron-star compression effect. Although results of the revised simulations
show that the compression is reduced for a given total orbital angular
momentum, the inner most stable circular orbit moves to closer separation
distances. At these closer orbits significant compression and even collapse is
still possible prior to merger for a sufficiently soft EOS. The reduced
compression in the corrected simulation is consistent with other recent studies
of rigid irrotational binaries in quasiequilibrium in which the compression
effect is observed to be small. Another significant effect of this correction
is that the derived binary orbital frequencies are now in closer agreement with
post-Newtonian expectations.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Sex differences in plasma clozapine and norclozapine concentrations in clinical practice and in relation to body mass index and plasma glucose concentrations: a retrospective survey
Background
Clozapine is widely prescribed and, although effective, can cause weight gain and dysglycemia. The dysmetabolic effects of clozapine are thought to be more prevalent in women with this gender on average attaining 17Â % higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men.
Methods
We investigated the relationship between dose, body mass index (BMI), plasma glucose concentration, and plasma clozapine and N-desmethylclozapine (norclozapine) concentrations in 100 individuals with a severe enduring mental illness.
Results
Mean (10th/90th percentile) plasma clozapine concentrations were higher for women [0.49 (0.27â0.79) mg/L] compared with men [0.44 (0.26â0.70) mg/L] (F = 2.2; p = 0.035). There was no significant gender difference in the prescribed clozapine dose. BMI was significantly higher in women [mean (95 % CI) = 34.5 (26.0â45.3)] for females compared with 32.5 (25.2â41.0) for males. Overall, BMI increased by 0.7 kg/m 2 over a mean follow-up period of 210 days. A lower proportion, 41 % of women had a fasting blood glucose â€6.0 mmol/L (<6.0 mmol/L is defined by the International Diabetes Federation as normal glucose handling), compared with 88 % of men (Ï2  = 18.6, p < 0.0001).
Conclusions
We have shown that mean BMI and blood glucose concentrations are higher in women prescribed clozapine than in men. Women also tended to attain higher plasma clozapine concentrations than men. The higher BMI and blood glucose in women may relate to higher tissue exposure to clozapine, as a consequence of sex differences in drug metabolism
Spur-reduced digital sinusoid synthesis
This article presents and analyzes a technique for reducing the spurious signal content in digital sinusoid synthesis. Spurious-harmonic (spur) reduction is accomplished through dithering both amplitude and phase values prior to word-length reduction. The analytical approach developed for analog quantization is used to produce new bounds on spur performance in these dithered systems. Amplitude dithering allows output word-length reduction without introducing additional spurs. Effects of periodic dither similar to those produced by a pseudonoise (PN) generator are analyzed. This phase-dithering method provides a spur reduction of 6(M plus one) dB per phase bit when the dither consists of M uniform variates. While the spur reduction is at the expense of an increase in system noise, the noise power can be made white, making the power spectral density small. This technique permits the use of a smaller number of phase bits addressing sinusoid lookup tables, resulting in an exponential decrease in system complexity. Amplitude dithering allows the use of less complicated multipliers and narrower data paths in purely digital applications, as well as the use of coarse resolution, highly linear digital to analog converters (DAC's) to obtain spur performance limited by the DAC linearity rather than its resolution
Possible explanation for star-crushing effect in binary neutron star simulations
A possible explanation is suggested for the controversial star-crushing
effect seen in numerical simulations of inspiraling neutron star binaries by
Wilson, Mathews and Marronetti (WMM). An apparently incorrect definition of
momentum density in the momentum constraint equation used by WMM gives rise to
a post-1-Newtonian error in the approximation scheme. We show by means of an
analytic, post-1-Newtonian calculation that this error causes an increase of
the stars' central densities which is of the order of several percent when the
stars are separated by a few stellar radii, in agreement with what is seen in

Effect Of Fluocinolone Acetonide Cream On Human Skin Blood Flow
Blood flow rate was measured in the forearm skin of human subjects exposed to ultraviolet irradiation. Blood flow was determined by the 133Xe disappearance technique 18hr after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation with a Westinghouse RS sunlamp held 10 inches from the skin for 10min. Ultraviolet irradiation caused skin blood flow to increase. Application of fluocinolone acetonide cream, 0.025%, 4 times in the 16hr following UV irradiation had no effect on either control skin blood flow or the UV-induced hyperemia
