Margaret Fitzgerald is a sophomore, majoring in Journalism with an emphasis on News/Editorial and minoring in Spanish. She is from St. Louis, Missouri. After graduation, Margaret sees herself either practicing media law or writing for a newspaper. She plans to move to St. Louis or Chicago. Art and photography have always been a passion of hers. Art has become a coping mechanism for Margaret whenever the stress of school tends to take over. Photography has become a side hustle and is something she could see herself doing professionally one day

A Framework of Academic Persistence and Success for Ethnically Diverse Graduate Nursing Students

    Get PDF
The goal of this qualitative study was to examine how ethnically diverse graduate nursing students persisted with academic studies. Ethnically diverse nurses are vastly underrepresented in the workforce. This problem is accentuated by high attrition rates in academic programs. A grounded theory approach was used. Five focus groups were conducted with 16 ethnically diverse graduate students in nursing and interviews were conducted with two diversity advisers. Analysis of the data indicated that the process of learning to balance stressors with moderators was key to academic persistence and retention. A conceptual framework emerged from the data that provides a guide for academic institutions seeking to implement strategies to promote retention and graduation of diverse graduate nursing students. Recommendations are offered to address faculty development, administrative action, and student resources. Aim. A study of the development of the Recreation Department of Stockton, California

Stockton is a city suffering from the sudden realization that it is no longer a small farm town, end that in the process of becoming a moderate-sized city, a community faces inevitable growing pains. The municipal recreation phase of city government well illustrates this fact. Because of the great need for expansion in this field, and because the city is now just beginning to rise to meet the occasion, a study of the Recreational Department and the program of the Metropolitan Recreation Commission in Stockton City Government and San Joaquin County, is a particularly interesting activity. In contrast to many theses which are based upon research in books and periodicals, this thesis has been the outgrowth of investigation based largely upon interviews with persons concerned with this phase of city government and upon personal observation, as well as reports and newspaper accounts of activities. As a resident of Stockton during much of the time covered in this report, as an attendant at periodic meetings of both the Junior Youth Council and the Stockton Youth Council, as a participant in some of the Recreation Department\u27s activities, and as a former employee of a Stockton group work agency, the author has had to guard against subjective reporting in writing this paper. She has. attempted to record evaluations which she considered valid and to include facts and sources on which her opinions were based

Fifth survey of parents of three and four year old children and their use of early years services (Summer 2000 to Spring 2001)

The main aim of the survey was to establish rates of participation for three and four year olds in all forms of pre-school provision in England... The survey also investigated the characteristics of providers used and parents’ opinions of the quantity and quality of provision in the local area in general as well as of the providers they used, and the influences on their choice of providers

Identification of a novel angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptide corresponding to a tryptic fragment of bovine ß-lactoglobulin

    Get PDF
peer-reviewedThe angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of a tryptic digest of bovine β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) was investigated. Intact β-lg essentially did not inhibit ACE while the tryptic digest gave an 84.3% inhibition of ACE. Peptide material eluting between 20 and 25% acetonitrile during C18 solid-phase extraction of the β-lg tryptic digest inhibited ACE by 93.6%. This solid-phase extraction fraction was shown by mass spectroscopy to contain β-lg f(142–148). This peptide had an ACE IC50 value of 42.6 μmol/l. The peptide was resistant to further digestion with pepsin and was hydrolysed to a very low extent with chymotrypsin. The contribution of specific amino acid residues within the peptide to ACE inhibitory activity and the potential application of this peptide as a nutraceutical is discussed

Demographic analysis of working families in eastern Massachusetts

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 129-132).As housing costs have soared nationwide, many policy makers have grown increasingly aware of working families' housing needs. Currently, having a full-time job does not guarantee decent and affordable housing. Many housing advocates have speculated that working families have had to move far from their jobs enduring long commutes, less time at home and increased traffic congestion. More specifically, housing advocates worry that key community workers who build and sustain strong communities, like teachers, nurses, firefighters and police officers, cannot live in the communities they serve. This thesis intends to substantiate these claims as they relate to Eastern Massachusetts' "key workers" through a rigorous demographic profiling of a sample of key worker households of those key workers employed in 165 communities. We analyze the key worker household rather than the key worker as an individual through the use of microdata from the 2000 Census. This approach results in an analysis of total household income rather than individual wages when studying housing affordability for key workers employed in Eastern Massachusetts. Our unique analysis produces results and conclusions that vary significantly from previous workforce housing studies.(cont.) We also are trying to better understand micro demographic details of these key worker households that cannot be understood from the traditional Census data. For example, what differences are seen in housing trends between all workers and key workers? Do key workers tend to rent or to own? How long do these key workers have to commute? Are these key workers the primary wage earners? Into what income bracket do these families fall? Do these key workers live and work in the communities they serve? The hope is that this demographic profiling will aid in quantifying the demand for key worker housing in the Boston area, as well as contribute to the local workforce housing policy debate.by Margaret Fitzgerald Wagner.S.M

Cognitive and Social Change in Young Children during Logo Activities: A Study of Individual Differences

    Get PDF
The purpose of the thesis was to evaluate the response of young children who differ in the way they process information when they are placed in Logo environments. The evaluation entailed a preliminary review of the Logo computer language, of reflectivity/impulsivity within the metacognitive domain and of conservation abilities and spatial skills. The role played by computers, particularly when the Logo language was used, in the social interactions of their users was also examined and the focus for each of these was their characteristics in relation to young children. Finally a model for individual differences was selected for use in the study. ... The statistical evidence for significant differences between the Logo and non-Logo groups was strong. The children in the Logo group changed quite dramatically in relation to reflectivity/impulsivity, with there being behavioural observations to support the statistical results that the children had become more reflective. On the other hand, their non-Logo peers had shifted towards higher levels of impulsivity, during the fifteen month period. Even some of the children who at the outset of the study were classified as reflective, had moved away from this. This can be logically accounted for by the age of the subjects, with six year olds being characterized by a style of impulsivity. This therefore makes the movement towards reflectivity by the Logo group, all the more impressive. ... The study also contributes in a unique way to the body of research because of the use of the model of individual differences as a referential framework, which permits a wider, yet more focussed interpretation of the statistical evidence
