    Coarse Grained Liouville Dynamics of piecewise linear discontinuous maps

    We compute the spectrum of the classical and quantum mechanical coarse-grained propagators for a piecewise linear discontinuous map. We analyze the quantum - classical correspondence and the evolution of the spectrum with increasing resolution.     An Interprofessional Consensus of Core Competencies for Prelicensure Education in Pain Management: Curriculum Application for Physical Therapy

    Core competencies in pain management for prelicensure health professional education were recently established. These competencies represent the expectation of minimal capabilities for graduating health care students for pain management and include 4 domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain (Appendix 1). The purpose of this article is to advocate for and identify how core competencies for pain can be applied to the professional (entry-level) physical therapist curriculum. By ensuring that core competencies in pain management are embedded within the foundation of physical therapist education, physical therapists will have the core knowledge necessary for offering best care for patients, and the profession of physical therapy will continue to stand with all health professions engaged in comprehensive pain management

    Advanced Composite Solar Sail System: Demonstrating Deployable Composite Solar Sails for Future Deep Space Small Spacecraft

    NASA is developing new deployable structures and materials technologies for solar sail propulsion systems destined for future low-cost deep space missions. Solar sails eliminate the need for conventional rocket propellants, relying instead upon the pressure of sunlight to generate continuous thrust. They can operate indefinitely, limited only by the space environment durability of the solar sail materials and spacecraft electronic systems.At NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley, researchers and engineers are planning a mission to demonstrate the next generation of solar sail technology for small interplanetary spacecraft. As part of this development effort, the Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) will demonstrate deployment of an approximately 800 square foot (74 square meter) composite boom (mast) solar sail system in low-Earth orbit. This will be the first use of composite booms as well as sail packing and deployment systems for a solar sail in orbit

    Core competencies for pain management: results of an interprofessional consensus summit.

    ObjectiveThe objective of this project was to develop core competencies in pain assessment and management for prelicensure health professional education. Such core pain competencies common to all prelicensure health professionals have not been previously reported.MethodsAn interprofessional executive committee led a consensus-building process to develop the core competencies. An in-depth literature review was conducted followed by engagement of an interprofessional Competency Advisory Committee to critique competencies through an iterative process. A 2-day summit was held so that consensus could be reached.ResultsThe consensus-derived competencies were categorized within four domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain management. These domains address the fundamental concepts and complexity of pain; how pain is observed and assessed; collaborative approaches to treatment options; and application of competencies across the life span in the context of various settings, populations, and care team models. A set of values and guiding principles are embedded within each domain.ConclusionsThese competencies can serve as a foundation for developing, defining, and revising curricula and as a resource for the creation of learning activities across health professions designed to advance care that effectively responds to pain

    Gamma ray burst optical counterpart search experiment (GROCSE)

    GROCSE (Gamma-Ray Optical Counterpart Search Experiment) is a system of automated telescopes that search for simultaneous optical activity associated with gamma ray bursts in response to real-time burst notifications provided by the BATSE/BACODINE network. The first generation system, GROCSE I, is sensitive down to MV ∼ 8.5MV∼8.5 and requires an average of 12 seconds to obtain the first images of the gamma ray burst error box defined by the BACODINE trigger. The collaboration is now constructing a second generation system which has a 4 second slewing time and can reach MV ∼ 14MV∼14 with a 5 second exposure. GROCSE II consists of 4 cameras on a single mount. Each camera views the night sky through a commercial Canon lens (f/1.8,(f/1.8, focal length 200 mm) and utilizes a 2K×2K2K×2K Loral CCD. Light weight and low noise custom readout electronics were designed and fabricated for these CCDs. The total field of view of the 4 cameras is 17.6×17.6°.17.6×17.6°. GROCSE II will be operating by the end of 1995.     Temporal, Spectral, and Polarization Dependence of the Nonlinear Optical Response of Carbon Disulfide

    Carbon disulfide is the most popular material for applications of nonlinear optical (NLO) liquids, and is frequently used as a reference standard for NLO measurements. Although it has been the subject of many investigations, determination of the third-order optical nonlinearity of CS2 has been incomplete. This is in part because of several strong mechanisms for nonlinear refraction (NLR), leading to a complex pulse width dependence. We expand upon the recently developed beam deflection technique, which we apply, along with degenerate four-wave mixing and Z-scan, to quantitatively characterize (in detail) the NLO response of CS2, over a broad temporal range, spanning 6 orders of magnitude (∼32 fs to 17 ns). The third-order response function, consisting of both nearly instantaneous bound-electronic and noninstantaneous nuclear contributions, along with the polarization and wavelength dependence from 390 to 1550 nm, is extracted from these measurements. This paper provides a self-consistent, quantitative picture of the third-order NLO response of liquid CS2, establishing it as an accurate reference material over this broad temporal and spectral range. These results allow prediction of the outcome of any NLR experiment on CS2

    Results from GROCSE I: A real-time search for gamma ray burst optical counterparts

    The GROCSE I experiment (Gamma-Ray Optical Counterpart Search Experiment) is a rapid slewing wide field of view optical telescope at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which responds to triggers from the BATSE GRB data telemetry stream that have been processed and distributed by the BACODINE network. GROCSE I has been in continuous automated operation since January 1994. As of October 1995, sky images for 22 GRB triggers have been recorded, in some cases while the burst was still in progress. The preliminary analysis of eight of these events are presented here. No optical counterparts have yet been detected.
