    Cohomology for Anyone

Crystallography has proven a rich source of ideas over several centuries. Among the many ways of looking at space groups, N. David Mermin has pioneered the Fourier-space approach. Recently, we have supplemented this approach with methods borrowed from algebraic topology. We now show what topology, which studies global properties of manifolds, has to do with crystallography. No mathematics is assumed beyond what the typical physics or crystallography student will have seen of group theory; in particular, the reader need not have any prior exposure to topology or to cohomology of groups.Comment: 21 pages + figures, bibliography, Mathematica code homology.

D.N.F. thanks Jack W. Bradbury and Sandra L. Vehrencamp for writing the article that originally stimulated his thoughts in this area. The authors are also grateful to Simon Denomme-Brown, Gustavo Betini and Elizabeth Hobson for reviewing drafts of this article, and Andrew G. McAdam for allowing D.N.F. to pursue this project despite employing him to study squirrels. Four anonymous reviewers provided useful comments that helped improve the manuscript. We have no conflicting interests.Peer reviewedPublisher PD

Abstract Teachers in a large, non-urban school system completed one or more positive psychology questionnaires assessing strengths of character; happiness; orientation toward pleasure, engagement, and meaning as three different paths to happiness; explanatory style; orientation toward teaching as a job, a career, or a calling; and job satisfaction. These results of these 170 participants are compared with those obtained from an Internet sample of 2,538 teachers on four of the same instruments. Correlations between the results for each of the two samples are examined. The resulting profiles of the two samples are compared, and suggestions are made as to possible uses of such data to guide improvement in large school systems
