Clearly, higher prices of food and energy end up in the broadest measures of consumer price inflation, such as the Consumer Price Index.     Lunar material transport vehicle

    The proposed vehicle, the Lunar Material Transport Vehicle (LMTV), has a mission objective of efficient lunar soil material transport. The LMTV was designed to meet a required set of performance specifications while operating under a given set of constraints. The LMTV is essentially an articulated steering, double-ended dump truck. The vehicle moves on four wheels and has two identical chassis halves. Each half consists of a chassis frame, a material bucket, two wheels with integral curvilinear synchronous motors, a fuel cell and battery arrangement, an electromechanically actuated dumping mechanism, and a powerful microprocessor. The vehicle, as designed, is capable of transporting up to 200 cu ft of material over a one mile round trip per hour. The LMTV is capable of being operated from a variety of sources.     Cobra Fiber-Optic Positioner Upgrade

    A prime focus spectrometer (PFS), along with corrective optics, will mount in place of the secondary mirror of the Subaru telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This will allow simultaneous observations of cosmologic targets. It will enable large-scale galactic archeology and dark energy surveys to help unlock the secrets of the universe. To perform these cosmologic surveys, an array of 2,400 optical fibers needs to be independently positioned within the 498-mm-diameter focal plane of the PFS instrument to collect light from galaxies and stars for spectrographic analyses. To allow for independent re-positioning of the fibers, a very small positioner (7.7 mm in diameter) is required. One hundred percent coverage of the focal plane is also required, so these small actuators need to cover a patrol region of 9.5 mm in diameter. To optimize the amount of light that can be collected, the fibers need to be placed within 5 micrometers of their intended target (either a star or galaxy). The Cobra Fiber Positioner was designed to meet the size and accuracy requirements stated above. Cobra is a two-degrees-of-freedom mechanism that can position an optical fiber in the focal plane of the PFS instrument to a precision of 5 micrometers. It is a theta-phi style positioner containing two rotary piezo tube motors with one offset from the other, which enables the optic fibers to be placed anywhere in a small circular patrol region. The patrol region of the actuator is such that the array of 2,400 positioners allows for full coverage of the instrument focal plane by overlapping the patrol areas. A second-generation Cobra positioner was designed based on lessons learned from the original prototype built in 2009. Improvements were made to the precision of the ceramic motor parts, and hard stops were redesigned to minimize friction and prevent jamming. These changes resulted in reducing the number of move iterations required to position the optical fiber within 5 micrometers of its target. At the time of this reporting, there are still many tests to be performed that will validate system level performance, but on an individual level, the Cobra positioner demonstrates excellent performance and will enable the PFS instrument to make unprecedented measurements of the universe. What is unique about the upgrades made to the Cobra positioner is the improved performance due to the design changes in the hard stops and the ceramic end caps of the motors. Other changes were made to reduce the unit cost of a Cobra positioner without affecting the performance, since thousands of these devices will have to be built for the PFS instrument

    Identity Reconfiguration and the Core Needs Framework: Exit Narratives among Former Far-Right Extremists

    This empirical study examines intensive interview data collected from eight (N=8) former members of white supremacist organizations in order to understand the meanings of exit – that is, disengagement and deradicalization – from the extremist’s perspective.  Using a thematic analysis approach, our findings build on the distinction in the existing exit literature between push and pull factors and the process of role exit identified by Ebaugh (1988).  These push and pull factors as well as social identity, we argue, are subsumed within a complex exit process, which includes disengagement, identity deconstruction, and transgressive and transitional relationships. For some, this process culminated in an accomplished identity reconstruction and deradicalization.  Most importantly, our findings suggest that exit is linked to entry by a developmental drive that we call the participant’s core need.  The core need was the background motivator of entry, disengagement, exit, and ultimately deradicalization.  We think that this identity reconfiguration and core needs framework may help make heterogenous exit trajectories that have remained puzzling for researchers more understandable

    Piezoelectric Rotary Tube Motor

    A custom rotary SQUIGGLE(Registered TradeMark) motor has been developed that sets new benchmarks for small motor size, high position resolution, and high torque without gear reduction. Its capabilities cannot be achieved with conventional electromagnetic motors. It consists of piezoelectric plates mounted on a square flexible tube. The plates are actuated via voltage waveforms 90 out of phase at the resonant frequency of the device to create rotary motion. The motors were incorporated into a two-axis postioner that was designed for fiber-fed spectroscopy for ground-based and space-based projects. The positioner enables large-scale celestial object surveys to take place in a practical amount of time

    AUTOMATING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PRODUCTIVITY METRICS

    Measurement of software development productivity is needed in order to control software costs, but it is discouragingly labor-intensive and expensive. Computer aided software engineering (CASE) technologies -- especially object-oriented, integrated CASE -- have the potential to support the automation of this measurement. In this paper, we describe automated analyzers for function point and code reuse measurement. Both analyzers take advantage of the existence of a meta-model of the application system, stored within an object repository, which contains the necessary information about the application system. We also propose new metrics for code reuse analysis, including reuse leverage, reuse value and reuse classification.     Pulsewidth dependence of ozone interference in the laser fluorescence measurement of OH in the atmosphere

    By varying the pulsewidth of the output from two dye lasers, we have verified experimentally that the steady‐state interference level of OH due to laser‐induced dissociation of ozone decreases linearly with decreasing pulsewidth of the exciting radiation. At low pressures, further reduction in the interference level due to the transient nature of OH formation processes was also observed.     Observations on the temperature regulation and water economy of the galah (Cacatua roseicapilla)

    1. 1. Galahs (Cacatua roseicapilla), like many other birds, undergo controlled hyperthermia in hot environments.2. 2. Basal metabolism of galahs (271 g) at night during summer averages 0.93 cm3O2 (g-hr)-1 vs 0.90 predicted.3. 3. They can evaporatively dissipate heat at 1.4-1.7 times the rate of metabolic heat production at high ambient temperatures (Ta).4. 4. Under moderate Ta and humidity, galahs must minimally drink 7.3 g H2O/24hr. Without water they lose 2.2% body mass/24 hr. Some of these birds benefited from drinking 0.3 M NaCl.5. 5.     Structure of Flux Line Lattices with Weak Disorder at Large Length Scales

    Dislocation-free decoration images containing up to 80,000 vortices have been obtained on high quality Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+x_{8+x} superconducting single crystals. The observed flux line lattices are in the random manifold regime with a roughening exponent of 0.44 for length scales up to 80-100 lattice constants.
