Religious Identity and Economic Behavior
We randomly vary religious identity salience in laboratory subjects to test how identity salience contributes to six hypothesized links from prior literature between religious identity and economic behavior. We find that religious identity salience makes Protestants increase contributions to public goods. Catholics decrease contributions to public goods, expect others to contribute less to public goods, and become less risk averse. Jews more strongly reciprocate as an employee in a bilateral labor market gift-exchange game. We find no evidence of religious identity salience effects on disutility of work effort, discount rates, or generosity in a dictator game.
Controlling Schools: How School Resource Officers’ Roles Map Onto Schools’ Behavior Management Strategies
School resource officer (SRO) behavior varies across schools, but little is known about what shapes their behavior. Social ecological theories state that features of communities shapes individual behavior, including police officers. This may similarly apply to SROs. This study uses the 2015 to 2016 School Survey on Crime and Safety to test the extent to which three aspects of a school’s context related to behavior management (i.e., security measures, disciplinary environment, and restorative practices) shape SROs’ involvement in three roles: law enforcement, teacher, and mentor. Using a generalized structural equation model to examine the relationships between school context and SRO roles, consistent with ecological theories, we find that school context shapes SRO roles. Quantum optical signal processing in diamond
Controlling the properties of single photons is essential for a wide array of
emerging optical quantum technologies spanning quantum sensing, quantum
computing, and quantum communications. Essential components for these
technologies include single photon sources, quantum memories, waveguides, and
detectors. The ideal spectral operating parameters (wavelength and bandwidth)
of these components are rarely similar; thus, frequency conversion and spectral
control are key enabling steps for component hybridization. Here we perform
signal processing of single photons by coherently manipulating their spectra
via a modified quantum memory. We store 723.5 nm photons, with 4.1 nm
bandwidth, in a room-temperature diamond crystal; upon retrieval we demonstrate
centre frequency tunability over 4.2 times the input bandwidth, and bandwidth
modulation between 0.5 to 1.9 times the input bandwidth. Our results
demonstrate the potential for diamond, and Raman memories in general, to be an
integrated platform for photon storage and spectral conversion.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Storage and retrieval of ultrafast single photons using a room-temperature diamond quantum memory
We report the storage and retrieval of single photons, via a quantum memory,
in the optical phonons of room-temperature bulk diamond. The THz-bandwidth
heralded photons are generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion and
mapped to phonons via a Raman transition, stored for a variable delay, and
released on demand. The second-order correlation of the memory output is
, demonstrating preservation of non-classical
photon statistics throughout storage and retrieval. The memory is low-noise,
high-speed and broadly tunable; it therefore promises to be a versatile
light-matter interface for local quantum processing applications.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Storage of polarization-entangled THz-bandwidth photons in a diamond quantum memory
Bulk diamond phonons have been shown to be a versatile platform for the
generation, storage, and manipulation of high-bandwidth quantum states of
light. Here we demonstrate a diamond quantum memory that stores, and releases
on demand, an arbitrarily polarized 250 fs duration photonic qubit. The
single-mode nature of the memory is overcome by mapping the two degrees of
polarization of the qubit, via Raman transitions, onto two spatially distinct
optical phonon modes located in the same diamond crystal. The two modes are
coherently recombined upon retrieval and quantum process tomography confirms
that the memory faithfully reproduces the input state with average fidelity
with a total memory efficiency of . In an
additional demonstration, one photon of a polarization-entangled pair is stored
in the memory. We report that entanglement persists in the retrieved state for
up to 1.3 ps of storage time. These results demonstrate that the diamond phonon
platform can be used in concert with polarization qubits, a key requirement for
polarization-encoded photonic processing
Thinking and acting both globally and locally : The Field School in intercultural education as a model for action-research training and civic learning.
We present the Field School model of intercultural civic education, service-learning, action research training, and collaboration (with local academic and community partners) based on field work in applied anthropology. Theoretical and methodological foundations of the Field School also include experiential learning and immersive pedagogy, multiculturalism and cross-cultural communication, international education and study abroad programs, collaborative international development, participatory research, and in-depth knowledge in one’s own specific discipline. The primary goals of these intensive, short-term action research projects in other, less-developed countries or regions are benefits for community partners that are as sustainable as possible and to foster and assess learning experiences of students. The Peabody-Vanderbilt Field School in Intercultural Education began in Ecuador and Argentina, but we focus on Field Schools in China, rural New Mexico, and South Africa. In Guangxi, P.R.C., U.S. and Chinese students learned to navigate political and cultural complexities to study migration, community needs and assets assessment, and health effects of changing diet on children, and assisted English language learning in schools, a university and a factory. Native American students from Gallup, NM, and students from Nashville, TN, travelled to each other’s locale to study the impact of diabetes in each culture and develop health education and other prevention strategies. In Cape Town, SA, students worked on health and education projects in three townships; we focus here on a collaboration with high school staff to study and reduce the high dropout rate. Density Fluctuations in an Electrolyte from Generalized Debye-Hueckel Theory
Near-critical thermodynamics in the hard-sphere (1,1) electrolyte is well
described, at a classical level, by Debye-Hueckel (DH) theory with (+,-) ion
pairing and dipolar-pair-ionic-fluid coupling. But DH-based theories do not
address density fluctuations. Here density correlations are obtained by
functional differentiation of DH theory generalized to {\it non}-uniform
densities of various species. The correlation length diverges universally

Statement on the Effects of Law Enforcement in School Settings
School-based law enforcement (SBLE) have become increasingly common in U.S. schools over recent decades despite the controversy surrounding their presence and lack of consensus around their associated benefits and harms. Drawing on the history and evidence base regarding SBLE, we advocate for an end to SBLE programs. Grounding our argument in principles of Community Psychology and positive youth development, we outline how the presence and actions of SBLE negatively affect individual students as well as school systems, with particularly harmful outcomes for students with minoritized and marginalized identities. Research on SBLE and school crime does not provide consistent evidence of positive impacts, and many studies find null effects for the relationship between SBLE and school crime or increases in crime and violence in schools. Though funding for SBLE is often prompted by high-profile acts of gun violence in schools, evidence suggests that SBLE neither prevents these incidents, nor lessens the severity when they do occur. Thus, we advocate for removing law enforcement from school settings and redirecting resources into inclusive, evidence-informed responses that are generally safer and more effective than SBLE. We close by outlining the policy landscape governing SBLE programs and ways communities can lobby for change
