Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Meat is a food with high nutritional density that has significant participation in the Brazilian diet. However, in excess it can cause harm to health. The aim of this study was to analyze the meat intake (g/day) among adults according to sociodemographic, behavioral and health situation characteristics, and to assess the types of meat most consumed. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional population-based study conducted in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, in 2008 and 2009. METHODS: Two-stage cluster sampling was used. The analysis included 948 adults between 20 and 59 years, who were participants in the Campinas Health Survey. Meat intake was assessed using 24-hour dietary recall. RESULTS: The mean meat intake adjusted for sex and age was 182.3 g (95% CI: 170.6-193.9 g), with significantly lower intake among women, individuals aged 50 years or over, those with the presence of two or more self-reported chronic diseases and those with three or more health complaints. Higher meat intake was found in segments with intermediate monthly family income (between 1 and 3 minimum wages), those with 16 or more appliances per household and those who consumed soft drinks seven days a week. Beef was consumed most frequently (44%) among the meats in the diet, followed by poultry, fish and pork. CONCLUSION: The data from this study reveal high meat intake in the population of Campinas and identify the segments that need to be prioritized for strategies directed towards appropriate meat intake. © 2016, Associacao Paulista de Medicina. We assessed the overall diet quality and adequacy of diet consumption of each component of the diet of adolescents according to demographic, socioeconomic and body mass index (BMI) data. A cross-sectional population-based study analyzed a representative sample of 409 adolescents, aged 12-19 years, using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). We estimated the prevalence of diets classified in the first quartile of the HEI and the average scores of each component of the HEI. Linear and Poisson multiple regressions were used in the analysis. The mean score of HEI was 59.7. We observed a lower prevalence of inadequate diets in the segment with heads of household presenting higher schooling. The lower socioeconomic status segments, measured by income and schooling, showed a lower consumption of vegetables, fruits, dairy products and a less diversified diet, and a higher intake of cereals and legumes. Overweight/obese adolescents consume more meat and eggs and less fruit compared to low weight/normal weight adolescents. Girls had a higher intake of total fat and lower sodium intake. The results identified diet components that deserve more attention in the strategies to promote healthy eating, and the more vulnerable segments among adolescents.153605616(2010) Child and adolescent health and development: Progress report 2009: Highlights, , World Health Organization, Geneva(2011) Ministério da Saúde, , Brasil, Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde. Non-communicable diseases are growing at an alarming rate in Latin America. We assessed total and added sugar intake in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, to verify the adequacy of the World Health Organization’s recommendations, considering gender, socioeconomic level (SEL) and age. A total of 9218 non-institutionalized individuals living in urban areas (age range 15-65 years) were assessed in the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health (ELANS), a multicenter household population-based cross-sectional survey. Socio-demographic data were collected. Total and added sugar intakes were measured using two non-consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The prevalence of excessive sugar intake was estimated. A large proportion of individuals showed high consumption of total and added sugar intake, which reflected in the high prevalence of excessive sugar intake. With minimal differences across countries, in general, women, individuals with high SEL, and younger people had higher percentages of total energy intake from total and added sugar intake, and of contribution of carbohydrates from total and added sugars. Thus, there is high consumption of total and added sugar intake in the Latin American countries with some peculiarities considering socio-demographic variables, which should be considered in each country’s health intervention proposals

Latin American consumption of major food groups: Results from the ELANS study

Background The Latin American (LA) region is still facing an ongoing epidemiological transition and shows a complex public health scenario regarding non-communicable diseases (NCDs). A healthy diet and consumption of specific food groups may decrease the risk of NCDs, however there is a lack of dietary intake data in LA countries. Objective Provide updated data on the dietary intake of key science-based selected food groups related to NCDs risk in LA countries. Design ELANS (Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health) is a multicenter cross-sectional study assessing food consumption from an urban sample between15 to 65 years old from 8 LA countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela). Two 24-HR were obtained from 9, 218 individuals. The daily intake of 10 food groups related to NCDs risk (fruits; vegetables; legumes/beans; nuts and seeds; whole grains products; fish and seafood; yogurt; red meat; processed meats; sugar-sweetened beverages (ready-to-drink and homemade)) were assessed and compared to global recommendations. Results Only 7.2% of the overall sample reached WHO's recommendation for fruits and vegetables consumption (400 grams per day). Regarding the dietary patterns related to a reduced risk of NCDs, among the overall sample legumes and fruits were the food groups with closer intake to the recommendation, although much lower than expected (13.1% and 11.5%, respectively). Less than 3.5% of the sample met the optimal consumption level of vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and yogurt. Largest country-dependent differences in average daily consumption were found for legumes, nuts, fish, and yogurt. Mean consumption of SSB showed large differences between countries. Conclusion Diet intake quality is deficient for nutrient-dense food groups, suggesting a higher risk for NCDs in the urban LA region in upcoming decades. These data provide relevant and up-to-date information to take urgent public health actions to improve consumption of critically foods in order to prevent NCDs. Copyright

Diet Quality And Associated Factors Among The Elderly: A Population-based Study In Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil [qualidade Da Dieta E Fatores Associados Entre Idosos: Estudo De Base Populacional Em Campinas, São Paulo, Brasil]

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of diet among the elderly and associations with socio-demographic variables, health-related behaviors, and diseases. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in a representative sample of 1,509 elderly participants in a health survey in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. Food quality was assessed using the Revised Diet Quality Index (DQI-R). Mean index scores were estimated and a multiple regression model was employed for the adjusted analyses. The highest diet quality scores were associated with age 80 years or older, Evangelical religion, diabetes mellitus, and physical activity, while the lowest scores were associated with home environments shared with three or more people, smoking, and consumption of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. The findings emphasize a general need for diet quality improvements in the elderly, specifically in subgroups with unhealthy behaviors, who should be targeted with comprehensive strategies.30816801694Iser, B.P.M., Yokota, R.T.C., Sá, N.N.B., Moura, L., Malta, D.C., Prevalência de fatores de risco e proteção para doenças crônicas nas capitais do Brasil principais resultados do Vigitel 2010 (2012) Ciênc Saúde Coletiva, 17, pp. 2343-2356Inzitari, M., Doets, E., Bartali, B., Benetou, V., Di Bari, M., Visser, M., Nutrition in the age-related disablement process (2011) J Nutr Health Aging, 15, pp. 599-604Soenen, S., Chapman, I.M., Body weight, anorexia, and undernutrition in older people (2013) J Am Med Dir Assoc, 14, pp. 642-648Fisberg, R.M., Marchioni, D.M.L., Castro, M.A., Verly Junior, E., Araújo, M.C., Bezerra, I.N., Ingestão inadequada de nutrientes na população de idosos do Brasil: Inquérito Nacional de Alimentação 2008-2009 (2013) Rev Saúde Pública, 47 (1), pp. 222S-230SKennedy, E.T., Ohls, J., Carlson, S., Fleming, K., The Healthy Eating Index: Design and applications (1995) J Am Diet Assoc, 95, pp. 1103-1108(2005) Department of Health and Human Services, , U.S. Department of AgricultureU.S, Dietary guidelines for Americans, Washington DC: U.S. Department of Agriculture/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services2005Guenther, P.M., Reedy, J., Krebs-Smith, S.M., Reeve, B.B., Basiotis, P.P., (2007) Development and evaluation of the Healthy Eating Index-2005: technical report, , Washington DC: Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, U.S. Department of AgricultureFisberg, R.M., Slater, B., Barros, R.R., Lima, F.D., Cesar, C.L.G., Carandina, L., Índice de Qualidade da Dieta: Avaliação da adaptação e aplicabilidade (2004) Rev Nutr, 17, pp. 301-308(2006) Guia alimentar para a população brasileira: promovendo a alimentação saudável, , Coordenação-Geral da Política de Alimentação e Nutrição, Departamento de Atenção Básica, Secretaria de Atenção à Saúde, Ministério da Saúde, Brasília: Ministério da SaúdePrevidelli, A.N., Andrade, S.C., Pires, M.M., Ferreira, S.R.G., Fisberg, R.M., Marchioni, D.M., Índice de Qualidade da Dieta Revisado para população brasileira (2011) Rev Saúde Pública, 45, pp. 794-798Domene, M.A., Avaliação do consumo alimentar (2011) Nutrição em saúde pública, pp. 41-54. , Taddei JA, Lang RMF, Silva GL, Toloni MHA, organizadores, Rio de Janeiro: RubioFisberg, R.M., Villar, B.S., (2002) Manual de receitas e medidas caseiras para cálculo de inquéritos alimentares, , São Paulo: Editora SignusPinheiro, A.B.V., Lacerda, E.M.A., Benzecry, E.H., Gomes, M.C.S., Costa, V.M., (2004) Tabela para avaliação de consume alimentar em medidas caseiras, , 5a Ed. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based study involving 2376 individuals surveyed in 2003, and 1662 individuals in 2008 (Health Survey of São Paulo, ISA-Capital). Participants were of both sexes and aged 12 to 19 years old (adolescents), 20 to 59 years old (adults) and 60 years old or over (older adults). Food intake was assessed using the 24-h dietary recall method while diet quality was determined by the Brazilian Healthy Eating Index (BHEI-R). The prevalence of descriptive variables for 2003 and 2008 was compared adopting a confidence interval of 95%. The means of total BHEI-R score and its components for 2003 and 2008 were compared for each age group. Associations between the BHEI-R and independent variables were evaluated for each survey year using multiple linear regression analysis. Results showed that the mean BHEI-R increased (54.9 vs. 56.4 points) over the five-year period. However, the age group evaluation showed a deterioration in diet quality of adolescents, influenced by a decrease in scores for dark-green and orange vegetables and legumes, total grains, oils and SoFAAS (solid fat, alcohol and added sugar) components. In the 2008 survey, adults had a higher BHEI-R score, by 6.1 points on average, compared to adolescents. Compared to older adults, this difference was 10.7 points. The diet quality remains a concern, especially among adolescents, that had the worst results compared to the other age groups. © 201643913962007/51488-2, FAPESP, São Paulo Research Foundation2007/51488–2, FAPESP, São Paulo Research Foundation2009/15831-0, FAPESP, São Paulo Research Foundation2009/15831-0, FAPESP, São Paulo Research FoundationFundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

Family Income Per Capita, Age, And Smoking Status Are Predictors Of Low Fiber Intake In Residents Of São Paulo, Brazil

We hypothesized that dietary total fiber intake may be less than recommendations and that the intake of total, soluble, and insoluble fiber may be associated with demographic, lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors. Data were drawn from the Health Survey of São Paulo, a cross-sectional population-based study. Adolescents, adults, and elderly persons living in São Paulo city were included. Demographic, lifestyle, and anthropometric data were collected from households. Dietary intake was measured using two 24-hour dietary recalls. All analyses were conducted based on the sample design of the study. The proportion of individuals who met the adequate intake (AI) for total fiber intake was examined, and foods that contributed to the intake of fiber and fractions were evaluated. The relationship of total, soluble, and insoluble fiber intake with demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle characteristics was determined using multiple linear regression models. A low proportion of individuals met the AI for dietary fiber. The foods that most contributed to total fiber intake were beans, French bread, and rice. Total fiber intake was negatively associated with former and current smokers and positively associated with family income per capita and age. Soluble fiber intake was negatively associated with current smokers and positively associated with female sex, age, and family income per capita. Insoluble fiber intake was negatively associated with former or current smokers and positively associated with age. In summary, residents in the city of São Paulo had a low fiber intake, and demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors were associated with dietary fiber and intake of its fractions. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.36547848

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors associated with quality of diet in adults residing in Greater Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil. This was a cross-sectional, population-based study conducted in the district of Butantã and the municipalities of Itapecerica da Serra, Embu, and Taboão da Serra, based on data from a questionnaire and 24-hour recall from 1,840 adults, both males and females, included in a household health survey (ISA-SP). Dietary quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) adapted to the local reality. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between HEI and other variables. Most individuals (75%) ate diets that were rated as "need improvement". The mean HEI was low for fruit, vegetables, and dairy products. Number of durable goods, head-of-family's schooling, and age ≥ 60 years were associated with HEI in men. For women, age was associated with HEI. Energy intake was considered an adjustment variable for both genders.241169178Kant, A.K., Indexes of overall diet quality: A review (1996) J Am Diet Assoc, 96, pp. 785-791Haines, P.S., Siega-Riz, A.M., Popkin, B.M., The diet quality index revised: A measurement instrument for populations (1999) J Am Diet Assoc, 99, pp. 697-704Lee, R.D., Nieman, D.C., Standards for nutrient intake (2003) Nutritional assessment, pp. 12-72. , Lee RD, Nieman DC, editors, 3rd Ed. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of self-reported leisure-time physical activity and related factors in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, 2008-2009. A population- based cross sectional study interviewed 2,691 individuals of both sexes, 12 years or older. A two-stage cluster (census tract, household) random sample provided data using home interviews in 2008 and 2009. Leisure-time physical activity was measured with IPAQ, long version. Complex sample-adjusted descriptive statistics provided prevalence estimates, chi-square tests screened associations, and prevalence ratios (PR) expressed effects. Multiple Poisson regression was used to ascertain adjusted effects, and design effects were calculated. Of the interviewees, 16.4% (95%CI: 14.3-18.7) reported leisure-time physical activity. The findings indicate the importance of encouraging leisure-time physical activity, which was associated with male sex, higher income, younger age (12 to 29 years), not smoking, and not reporting frequent fatigue.292270282Kohl, H.W., Craig, C.L., Lambert, E.V., Inoue, S., Alkandari, J.R., Leetongin, G., The pandemic of physical (2012) Lancet, 380, pp. 294-305Hallal, P.C., Andersen, L.B., Bull, Objective: This study was to adapt and to applied the U.S.A.'s Healthy Eating Index to evaluate the diet quality of individuals (n=50) residing in Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: The food intake was measured by the 24-hour dietary recall method, and evaluated by an adapted Healthy Eating Index. The index was obtained by a score of the distribution of the ten components of the considered healthy diet. Results: The mean Healthy Eating Index was 51,5; it was found that 12 percent of individuals had "good" diets; 74 percent, had diets that "needed improvement"; and 14 percent, had "poor" diets. There were a negative and significant correlation (p<0,05) between the Healthy Eating Index and the total dietary fat, fatty acids, cholesterol and sodium. The mean retinol and fiber intakes, presented a positive and significant correlation with the Healthy Eating Index. Conclusion: The results showed that the use of Healthy Eating Index in a target population is feasible.173301308Willet, W.C., (1998) Nutritional Epidemiology. 2nd Ed., , New York: Oxford University Press(1990) Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases: Report of a WHO Study Group, , Study Group on Diet, Nutrition and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases.
