    VUV-Vis optical characterization of Tetraphenyl-butadiene films on glass and specular reflector substrates from room to liquid Argon temperature

    The use of efficient wavelength-shifters from the vacuum-ultraviolet to the photosensor's range of sensitivity is a key feature in detectors for Dark Matter search and neutrino physics based on liquid argon scintillation detection. Thin film of Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) deposited onto the surface delimiting the active volume of the detector and/or onto the photosensor optical window is the most common solution in current and planned experiments. Detector design and response can be evaluated and correctly simulated only when the properties of the optical system in use (TPB film + substrate) are fully understood. Characterization of the optical system requires specific, sometimes sophisticated optical methodologies. In this paper the main features of TPB coatings on different, commonly used substrates is reported, as a result of two independent campaigns of measurements at the specialized optical metrology labs of ENEA and University of Tor Vergata. Measured features include TPB emission spectra with lineshape and relative intensity variation recorded as a function of the film thickness and for the first time down to LAr temperature, as well as optical reflectance and transmittance spectra of the TPB coated substrates in the wavelength range of the TPB emission

    Expression analysis of HLA-E and NKG2A and NKG2C receptors points at a role for natural killer function in ankylosing spondylitis

    Background. Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a complex chronic inflammatory disease strongly associated with the majority of HLA-B27 alleles. HLA-E are non-classical MHC class I molecules that specifically interact with the natural killer receptors NKG2A (inhibitory) and NKG2C (activating), and have been recently proposed to be involved in AS pathogenesis. Objectives: To analyze the expression of HLA-E and the CD94/NKG2 pair of receptors in HLA-B27 positive AS patients and healthy controls (HC) bearing the AS-associated, B*2705 and the non-AS-associated, B*2709 allele. Methods: The level of surface expression of HLA-E molecules on CD14 positive peripheral blood mononuclear cell was evaluated in 21 HLA-B*2705 patients with AS, 12 HLA-B*2705 HC, 12 HLA-B*2709 HC and 6 HLA-B27 negative HC, using the monoclonal antibody MEM-E/08 by quantitative cytofluorimetric analysis. The percentage and density of expression of HLA-E ligands NKG2A and NKG2C were also measured on CD3-CD56+ NK cells. Results. HLA-E expression in CD14 positive cells was significantly higher in AS patients (587.0 IQR 424-830) compared to B*2705 HC (389 IQR 251.3-440.5, p=0.0007), B*2709 HC (294.5 IQR 209.5-422, p=0.0004) and HLA-B27 negative HC (380 IQR 197.3-515.0, p=0.01). A higher number of NK cells expressing NKG2A compared to NKG2C was found in all cohort analysed as well as a higher cell surface density. Conclusion: The higher surface level of HLA-E molecules in AS patients compared to HC, concurrently with a prevalent expression of NKG2A, suggests that the crosstalk between these two molecules might play a role in AS pathogenesis accounting for the previously reported association between HLA-E and AS

    Anisotropy of losses in grain-oriented Fe-Si

    Comprehensive assessment of the magnetic behavior of grain-oriented steel (GO) Fe-Si sheets, going beyond the conventional characterization at power frequencies along the rolling direction (RD), can be the source of much needed information for the optimal design of transformers and efficient rotating machines. However, the quasi-monocrystal character of the material is conducive, besides an obviously strong anisotropic response, to a dependence of the measured properties on the sample geometry whenever the field is applied along a direction different from the rolling and the transverse (TD) directions. In this work, we show that the energy losses, measured from 1 to 300 Hz on GO sheets cut along directions ranging from 0° to 90° with respect to RD, can be interpreted in terms of linear composition of the same quantities measured along RD and TD. This feature, which applies to both the DC and AC properties, resides on the sample geometry-independent character of the RD and TD magnetization and on the loss separation principle. This amounts to state that, as substantiated by magneto-optical observations, the very same domain wall mechanisms making the magnetization to evolve in the RD and TD sheets, respectively, independently combine and operate in due proportions in all the other cases. By relying on these concepts, which overcome the limitations inherent to the semi-empirical models of the literature, we can consistently describe the magnetic losses as a function of cutting angle and stacking fashion of GO strips at different peak polarization levels and different frequencies

    Effects of two plant oil-based products on the mortality of red palm weevil and morpho-physiological characteristics of palm

    The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorous ferrugineus Oliver (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an economically important, tissue-boring pest of date palm in many parts of the world. The aim of the work was to investigate the effects of two plant oil-based products (BRK6 and BRK9) on the mortality of RPW (Exp. 1) and morpho-physiological characteristics of palm (Exp. 2). Laboratory experiments showed that the two mixture of oils BRK6 and BRK9 showed larvicide and adulticide properties. These properties were more pronounced on BRK9 than BRK6. The lethal concentration for 50% of individuals (LC50) calculated by probit, of BRK6 was 0.22% (for the 90% of individuals LC90 = 0.34) while for BRK9 the calculated LC50 was 0.10% (LC90 = 0.66). These data show that a smaller amount of BRK9 oil was required to induce the 50% of mortality of RPW larvae. As regards to the adults, BRK9 and BRK6 were effective only at the highest concentration (2 and 5%, respectively). Finally, injection of BRK9 into the palm trunk showed to promote chlorophyll content and photosynthesis of leaves thanks to a good translocation of zinc

    Carotid beta stiffness association with thyroid function

    Background: Thyroid hormone modulation of cardiovascular function has been associated with cardiovascular disease. Recent evidence suggests that free thyroxine (FT4) levels are associated with an increase in systemic arterial stiffness, but little is known about the effects of FT4 at the local level of the common carotid artery. β-stiffness index is a local elastic parameter usually determined by carotid ultrasound imaging. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in the ProgeNIA cohort, including 4846 subjects across a broad age range. For the purpose of this study, we excluded subjects with increased thyrotropin (TSH) levels and those treated with levothyroxine or thyrostatic. We assessed β stiffness, strain, wall–lumen ratio, carotid cross-sectional area (CSA), and stress and flow in the right common carotid artery. We tested whether FT4, heart rate, and their interactions were associated with carotid parameters. Results: FT4 was positively and independently associated with β stiffness index (β = 0.026, p = 0.041), and had a negative association with strain (β = −0.025, p = 0.009). After adding heart rate and the interaction between FT4 and heart rate to the model, FT4 was still associated with the β stiffness index (β = 0.186, p = 0.06), heart rate was positively associated with the stiffness index (β = 0.389, p < 0.001) as well as their interaction (β = 0.271, p = 0.007). Conclusion: This study suggests that higher FT4 levels increase arterial stiffness at the common carotid level, consistent with a detrimental effect on elastic arteries. The effect of FT4 is likely to be primarily attributable to its effect on heart rate

    Stimulation of cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium pump by acylphosphatase: relationship to phospholamban phosphorylation.

    Abstract Ca2+ transport by cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum is tightly coupled with the enzymatic activity of Ca2+-dependent ATPase, which forms and decomposes an intermediate phosphoenzyme. Heart sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ pump is regulated by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) phospholamban phosphorylation, which results in a stimulation of the initial rates of Ca2+ transport and Ca2+ ATPase activity. In the present studies we found that acylphosphatase from heart muscle, used at concentrations within the physiological range, actively hydrolyzes the phosphoenzyme of cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ pump, with an apparent Km on the order of 10−7 M, suggesting an high affinity of the enzyme for this special substrate. In unphosphorylated vesicles acylphosphatase enhanced the rate of ATP hydrolysis and Ca2+ uptake with a concomitant significant decrease in apparent Km for Ca2+ and ATP. In vesicles whose phospholamban was PKA-phosphorylated, acylphosphatase also stimulated the rate of Ca2+ uptake and ATP hydrolysis but to a lesser extent, and the Km values for Ca2+ and ATP were not significantly different with respect to those found in the absence of acylphosphatase. These findings suggest that acylphosphatase, owing to its hydrolytic effect, accelerates the turnover of the phosphoenzyme intermediate with the consequence of an enhanced activity of Ca2+ pump. It is known that phosphorylation of phospholamban results in an increase of the rate at which the phosphoenzyme is decomposed. Thus, as discussed, a competition between phospholamban and acylphosphatase effect on the phosphoenzyme might be proposed to explain why the stimulation induced by this enzyme is less marked in PKA-phosphorylated than in unphosphorylated heart vesicles

    Politiche per l'industria: ridurre o abolire l'Irap?

    L’imposta regionale sulle attività produttive (Irap) è oggetto di un ampio dibattito incentrato su alcune ipotesi di riforma relative alla riduzione o alla abolizione di questo strumento di prelievo, percepito dagli operatori come iniquo. L’argomentazione a sostegno di queste tesi si basa sul fatto che una diminuzione del prelievo potrebbe supportare ovvero stimolare il sistema produttivo, soprattutto in termini di competitività. L’analisi delle possibili riforme dell’Irap non dovrebbe trascurare gli effetti indotti dalla distribuzione del reddito, evidenziando quali potrebbero essere i percettori di reddito avvantaggiati e svantaggiati. In questo lavoro si utilizzerà un modello computazionale (CGE), implementato su una SAM (Social Accounting Matrix) che descrive il flusso circolare del reddito, per valutare l’impatto dei possibili scenari di riforma dell’Irap sulla produzione industriale, sul reddito reale, sul livello dei prezzi dei beni e dei fattori primari, sull’occupazione e sul bilancio dello Stato. Infine, in alternativa alla riforma Irap, si prenderà in considerazione l’ipotesi di destinare l’ammontare delle risorse disponibili alla riduzione delle aliquote Ire.Irap,Social Accounting Matrix,CGE,Ire
