    Residential segregation and black-white intermarriage.

I use 1980, 1990, and 2000 Census data to show that greater residential segregation is associated with a lower probability that black men, black women, white men, and white women are in black-white marriages. This negative relationship grows stronger among whites and remains constant among blacks when I control for local marriage market characteristics. Plausible explanations for the results are discussed and investigated.segregation, racial intermarriage, spatial mismatch

The Allocation of Merit Pay in Academia: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This paper investigates whether the widespread awarding of faculty merit pay at a large public university accurately reflects productivity. We show that pairwise voting on a quality standard by a committee can in theory be consistent with observed allocation patterns. However, the data indicate only nominal adherence to a quality standard. Departments with more severe compression issues are more likely to award merit pay as a countermeasure and some departments appear to be motivated by nonpecuniary incentives. Much of the variance in merit pay allocation remains unexplained. These results suggest reform is needed to improve transparency in the merit system.merit, faculty compensation

Optimization of graded multilayer designs for astronomical x-ray telescopes

    Get PDF
We developed a systematic method for optimizing the design of depth-graded multilayers for astronomical hard-x-ray and soft-γ-ray telescopes based on the instrument’s bandpass and the field of view. We apply these methods to the design of the conical-approximation Wolter I optics employed by the balloon-borne High Energy Focusing Telescope, using W/Si as the multilayer materials. In addition, we present optimized performance calculations of mirrors, using other material pairs that are capable of extending performance to photon energies above the W K-absorption edge (69.5 keV), including Pt/C, Ni/C, Cu/Si, and Mo/Si
