Reconstructing initial data using observers: error analysis of the semi-discrete and fully discrete approximations
A new iterative algorithm for solving initial data inverse problems from partial observations has been recently proposed in Ramdani et al. (Automatica 46(10), 1616-1625, 2010 ). Based on the concept of observers (also called Luenberger observers), this algorithm covers a large class of abstract evolution PDE's. In this paper, we are concerned with the convergence analysis of this algorithm. More precisely, we provide a complete numerical analysis for semi-discrete (in space) and fully discrete approximations derived using finite elements in space and an implicit Euler method in time. The analysis is carried out for abstract Schrödinger and wave conservative systems with bounded observation (locally distributed)
The Impact of new Execution Venues on European Equity Marketsâ Liquidity â The Case of Chi-X
With the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive in effect since November 2007, new trading venues have emerged in European equities trading, among them Chi-X. This paper analyzes the impact of this new market entrant on the home market as well as on consolidated liquidity of French blue chip equities, newly tradable on Chi-X. Our findings suggest that owing to this new competition the home marketâs liquidity has enhanced. This is apparently due to the battle for order flow which results in narrower spreads and increased market depth. These results imply that overall liquidity in a virtually consolidated order book is in the French case higher than without the new competitor
Reduction of three-band model for copper oxides to single-band generalized t~-~J model
A three-band model for copper oxides in the region of parameters where the
second hole on the copper has energy close to the first hole on the oxygen is
considered. The exact solution for one hole on a ferromagnetic background of
the ordered copper spins is obtained. A general procedure for transformation of
the primary Hamiltonian to the Hamiltonian of singlet and triplet excitations
is proposed. Reduction of the singlet-triplet Hamiltonian to the single-band
Hamiltonian of the generalized t~-~J model is performed. A comparison of the
solution for the generalized t~-~J model on a ferromagnetic background with the
exact solution shows a very good agreement.Comment: 20 pages (LATEX
Nernst Effect of stripe ordering LaEuSrCuO
We investigate the transport properties of
LaEuSrCuO (, 0.08, 0.125, 0.15, 0.2) with a
special focus on the Nernst effect in the normal state. Various anomalous
features are present in the data. For and 0.15 a kink-like anomaly is
present in the vicinity of the onset of charge stripe order in the LTT phase,
suggestive of enhanced positive quasiparticle Nernst response in the stripe
ordered phase. At higher temperature, all doping levels except exhibit
a further kink anomaly in the LTO phase which cannot unambiguously be related
to stripe order. Moreover, a direct comparison between the Nernst coefficients
of stripe ordering LaEuSrCuO and superconducting
LaSrCuO at the doping levels and reveals
only weak differences. Our findings make high demands on any scenario
interpreting the Nernst response in hole-doped cuprates
Magnetic Properties of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} in a self-consistent approach: Comparison with Quantum-Monte-Carlo Simulations and Experiments
We analyze single-particle electronic and two-particle magnetic properties of
the Hubbard model in the underdoped and optimally-doped regime of \YBCO by
means of a modified version of the fluctuation-exchange approximation, which
only includes particle-hole fluctuations. Comparison of our results with
Quantum-Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations at relatively high temperatures () suggests to introduce a temperature renormalization in order to
improve the agreement between the two methods at intermediate and large values
of the interaction .
We evaluate the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time
and of the spin-echo decay time and compare it with the results
of NMR measurements on an underdoped and an optimally doped \YBCO sample. For
it is possible to consistently adjust the parameters of the Hubbard
model in order to have a good {\it semi-quantitative} description of this
temperature dependence for temperatures larger than the spin gap as obtained
from NMR measurements. We also discuss the case , which is more
appropriate to describe magnetic and single-particle properties close to
half-filling. However, for this larger value of the agreement with QMC as

Fast automated cell phenotype image classification
BACKGROUND: The genomic revolution has led to rapid growth in sequencing of genes and proteins, and attention is now turning to the function of the encoded proteins. In this respect, microscope imaging of a protein's sub-cellular localisation is proving invaluable, and recent advances in automated fluorescent microscopy allow protein localisations to be imaged in high throughput. Hence there is a need for large scale automated computational techniques to efficiently quantify, distinguish and classify sub-cellular images. While image statistics have proved highly successful in distinguishing localisation, commonly used measures suffer from being relatively slow to compute, and often require cells to be individually selected from experimental images, thus limiting both throughput and the range of potential applications. Here we introduce threshold adjacency statistics, the essence which is to threshold the image and to count the number of above threshold pixels with a given number of above threshold pixels adjacent. These novel measures are shown to distinguish and classify images of distinct sub-cellular localization with high speed and accuracy without image cropping. RESULTS: Threshold adjacency statistics are applied to classification of protein sub-cellular localization images. They are tested on two image sets (available for download), one for which fluorescently tagged proteins are endogenously expressed in 10 sub-cellular locations, and another for which proteins are transfected into 11 locations. For each image set, a support vector machine was trained and tested. Classification accuracies of 94.4% and 86.6% are obtained on the endogenous and transfected sets, respectively. Threshold adjacency statistics are found to provide comparable or higher accuracy than other commonly used statistics while being an order of magnitude faster to calculate. Further, threshold adjacency statistics in combination with Haralick measures give accuracies of 98.2% and 93.2% on the endogenous and transfected sets, respectively. CONCLUSION: Threshold adjacency statistics have the potential to greatly extend the scale and range of applications of image statistics in computational image analysis. They remove the need for cropping of individual cells from images, and are an order of magnitude faster to calculate than other commonly used statistics while providing comparable or better classification accuracy, both essential requirements for application to large-scale approaches
The Relation Between the Surface Brightness and the Diameter for Galactic Supernova Remnants
In this work, we have constructed a relation between the surface brightness
() and diameter (D) of Galactic C- and S-type supernova remnants
(SNRs). In order to calibrate the -D dependence, we have carefully
examined some intrinsic (e.g. explosion energy) and extrinsic (e.g. density of
the ambient medium) properties of the remnants and, taking into account also
the distance values given in the literature, we have adopted distances for some
of the SNRs which have relatively more reliable distance values. These
calibrator SNRs are all C- and S-type SNRs, i.e. F-type SNRs (and S-type SNR
Cas A which has an exceptionally high surface brightness) are excluded. The
Sigma-D relation has 2 slopes with a turning point at D=36.5 pc: (at 1

basis for the -D dependence and particularly the reasons for the change
in slope of the relation were stated. Added to this, we have shown the
dependence between the radio luminosity and the diameter which seems to have a
slope close to zero up to about D=36.5 pc. We have also adopted distance and
diameter values for all of the observed Galactic SNRs by examining all the
available distance values presented in the literature together with the

Therapeutic Hypothermia after In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Children
BACKGROUND: Targeted temperature management is recommended for comatose adults and children after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest; however, data on temperature management after in-hospital cardiac arrest are limited. METHODS: In a trial conducted at 37 childrenâs hospitals, we compared two temperature interventions in children who had had in-hospital cardiac arrest. Within 6 hours after the return of circulation, comatose children older than 48 hours and younger than 18 years of age were randomly assigned to therapeutic hypothermia (target temperature, 33.0°C) or therapeutic normothermia (target temperature, 36.8°C). The primary efficacy outcome, survival at 12 months after cardiac arrest with a score of 70 or higher on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, second edition (VABS-II, on which scores range from 20 to 160, with higher scores indicating better function), was evaluated among patients who had had a VABS-II score of at least 70 before the cardiac arrest. RESULTS: The trial was terminated because of futility after 329 patients had undergone randomization. Among the 257 patients who had a VABS-II score of at least 70 before cardiac arrest and who could be evaluated, the rate of the primary efficacy outcome did not differ significantly between the hypothermia group and the normothermia group (36% [48 of 133 patients] and 39% [48 of 124 patients], respectively; relative risk, 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.67 to 1.27; P = 0.63). Among 317 patients who could be evaluated for change in neurobehavioral function, the change in VABS-II score from baseline to 12 months did not differ significantly between the groups (P = 0.70). Among 327 patients who could be evaluated for 1-year survival, the rate of 1-year survival did not differ significantly between the hypothermia group and the normothermia group (49% [81 of 166 patients] and 46% [74 of 161 patients], respectively; relative risk, 1.07; 95% CI, 0.85 to 1.34; P = 0.56). The incidences of blood-product use, infection, and serious adverse events, as well as 28-day mortality, did not differ significantly between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among comatose children who survived in-hospital cardiac arrest, therapeutic hypothermia, as compared with therapeutic normothermia, did not confer a significant benefit in survival with a favorable functional outcome at 1 year.
