    NON-PETROLEUM-BASED BINDERS FOR PAVING APPLICATIONS: RHEOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL INVESTIGATION ON AGEING EFFECTS

    The massive exploitation of non-renewable natural resources which has taken place in the last decade has led to significant global environmental concerns. In such a context, the use of non-petroleum-based binders for the construction of bound layers of flexible pavements can represent an effective solution to limit crude oil depletion. The research work presented in this paper focused on the effects of ageing on the rheological and chemical characteristics of a non-bituminous binder, indicated in the study as a “biobinder”, and a traditional neat bitumen selected as a reference material. Binders were analyzed in four ageing conditions obtained by making use of the Rolling Thin Film Oven and of the Pressure Ageing Vessel. Rheological behaviour of binders was investigated by means of oscillatory tests carried out in a wide range of temperatures and frequencies with a dynamic shear rheometer. Chemical structure was explored via Thin Layer Chromatographic analyses and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The experimental work demonstrated that mechanisms of ageing which are involved in biobinders completely differ from those experienced by petroleum-based binders. Concerns were expressed with respect to the applicability to non-conventional binders of currently available ageing techniques and of chemical characterization methods

    Strangeness Content in the Nucleon

    I review recent studies of strangeness content in the nucleon pertaining to the flavor-singlet gA0g_A^0, the sˉs\bar{s}s matrix element and the strangeness electric and magnetic form factors GEs(q2)G_E^s(q^2) and GMs(q2)G_M^s(q^2), based on lattice QCD calculations. I shall also discuss the relevance of incorporating the strangeness content in nuclei in regard to strange baryon-antibaryon productions from proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC energies.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Invited talk at V Int.     A study of the proton spectra following the capture of K−K^- in 6^6Li and 12^{12}C with FINUDA

    Momenta spectra of protons emitted following the capture of K−K^- in 6^6Li and 12^{12}C have been measured with 1% resolution. The 12^{12}C spectrum is smooth whereas for 6^6Li a well defined peak appears at about 500 MeV/cc. The first observation of a structure in this region was identified as a strange tribaryon or, possibly, a Kˉ\bar K-nuclear state. The peak is correlated with a π−\pi^- coming from Σ−\Sigma^- decay in flight, selected by setting momenta larger than 275 MeV/cc. The Σ−\Sigma^- could be produced, together with a 500 MeV/cc proton, by the capture of a K−K^- in a deuteron-cluster substructure of the 6^6Li nucleus. The capture rate for such a reaction is (1.62\pm 0.23_{stat} ^{+0.71}_{-0.44}(sys))%/K^-_{stop}, in agreement with the existing observations on 4^4He targets and with the hypothesis that the 6^6Li nucleus can be interpreted as a (d+α)(d+\alpha) cluster.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures.     Multi-band high resolution spectroscopy rules out the hot Jupiter BD+20 1790b - First data from the GIARPS Commissioning

    Context. Stellar activity is currently challenging the detection of young planets via the radial velocity (RV) technique. Aims. We attempt to definitively discriminate the nature of the RV variations for the young active K5 star BD+20 1790, for which visible (VIS) RV measurements show divergent results on the existence of a substellar companion. Methods. We compare VIS data with high precision RVs in the near infrared (NIR) range by using the GIANO - B and IGRINS spectrographs. In addition, we present for the first time simultaneous VIS-NIR observations obtained with GIARPS (GIANO - B and HARPS - N) at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Orbital RVs are achromatic, so the RV amplitude does not change at different wavelengths, while stellar activity induces wavelength-dependent RV variations, which are significantly reduced in the NIR range with respect to the VIS. Results. The NIR radial velocity measurements from GIANO - B and IGRINS show an average amplitude of about one quarter with respect to previously published VIS data, as expected when the RV jitter is due to stellar activity. Coeval multi-band photometry surprisingly shows larger amplitudes in the NIR range, explainable with a mixture of cool and hot spots in the same active region. Conclusions. In this work, the claimed massive planet around BD+20 1790 is ruled out by our data. We exploited the crucial role of multi- wavelength spectroscopy when observing young active stars: thanks to facilities like GIARPS that provide simultaneous observations, this method can reach its maximum potential.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Production of Λ6^{6}_{\Lambda}H and Λ7^{7}_{\Lambda}H with the (Kstop−^{-}_{stop},π+\pi^+) reaction

    The production of neutron rich Λ\Lambda-hypernuclei via the (Ks−topK^-_stop,π+\pi^+) reaction has been studied using data collected with the FINUDA spectrometer at the DAΊ\PhiNE ϕ\phi-factory (LNF). The analysis of the inclusive π+\pi^+ momentum spectra is presented and an upper limit for the production of Λ6^6_\LambdaH and Λ7^7_\LambdaH from 6^6Li and 7^7Li, is assessed for the first time.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures.     Control of Transdermal Permeation of Hydrocortisone Acetate from Hydrophilic and Lipophilic Formulations

    The purpose of this research was the preparation of four formulations containing hydrocortisone acetate (HCA) for topical application, including two aqueous systems (hydrophilic microemulsion and aqueous gel) and two systems with dominant hydrophobicity (hydrophobic microemulsion and ointment). The formulations were tested for the release and permeation of HCA across an animal membrane. The release of HCA was found comparable for the four systems. The two microemulsions promote permeation across an ex-vivo membrane, examined by means of a Franz cell. Hydrophobic microemulsion guarantees the highest solubility (2,370 Όg/ml) and flux (133 Όg/cm2.h) of the drug, since it contains almost 40% Transcutol, a permeation enhancer. Gel and ointment provide lower solubility and flux, being the values, related to the ointment, the lowest ones (562 Όg/ml and 0.4 Όg/cm2.h). Experimental results allow the conclusion that gel and ointment can be suitable when it is desirable to minimize absorption of topically applied HCA as to keep the drug restricted to the diseased area and prevent side effects of the systemic presence of HCA

    Study of the transverse mass spectra of strange particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c

    The NA57 experiment has collected high statistics, high purity samples of \PKzS and \PgL, Ξ\Xi and Ω\Omega hyperons produced in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 AA GeV/cc. In this paper we present a study of the transverse mass spectra of these particles for a sample of events corresponding to the most central 53% of the inelastic Pb-Pb cross-section. We analyse the transverse mass distributions in the framework of the blast-wave model for the full sample and, for the first time at the SPS, as a function of the event centrality.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, submitted to J.     Dynamical quantum noise in Bose-Einstein condensates

    We introduce the study of dynamical quantum noise in Bose-Einstein condensates through numerical simulation of stochastic partial differential equations obtained using phase space representations. We derive evolution equations for a single trapped condensate in both the positive-PP and Wigner representations, and perform simulations to compare the predictions of the two methods. The positive-PP approach is found to be highly susceptible to the stability problems that have been observed in other strongly nonlinear, weakly damped systems. Using the Wigner representation, we examine the evolution of several quantities of interest using from a variety of choices of initial state for the condensate, and compare results to those for single-mode models.Comment: 8 figures, submitted to Phys.     Correlated Λd\Lambda d pairs from the Kstop−A→ΛdAâ€ČK^{-}_{stop} A \to \Lambda d A' reaction

    Correlated Λd\Lambda d pairs emitted after the absorption of negative kaons at rest Kstop−A→ΛdAâ€ČK^{-}_{stop}A\to \Lambda d A' in light nuclei 6Li^6Li and 12C^{12}C are studied. Λ\Lambda-hyperons and deuterons are found to be preferentially emitted in opposite directions. The Λd\Lambda d invariant mass spectrum of 6Li^6Li shows a bump whose mass is 3251±\pm6 MeV/c2^2. The bump mass (binding energy), width and yield are reported. The appearance of a bump is discussed in the realm of the [Kˉ3N\bar{K}3N] clustering process in nuclei.
