Cinematic and aesthetic cartographies of subjective mutation
This article exmaines the use of cinema as a mapping of subjective mutation in the work of Deleuze, Gauttari and Berardi. Drawing on Deleuze's distinciton between the reduction of the art-work to the symptom and the idea of art as symptomatology, the article focuses on Berardi's use of cinematic examples, posing the quesiton in each case of to what extent they function as symptomatologies or mere symptoms of cultural and subjective mutations in examples ranging from Bergman's Persona to Van Sant's Elephant to finish on speculations about Fincher's The Social Network as a cirtical engagement with subjective mutation in the 21st Century
New Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-Density-Wave of Chromium
Low-energy magnetic excitations of chromium have been reinvestigated with a
single-Q crystal using neutron scattering technique. In the transverse
spin-density-wave phase a new type of well-defined magnetic excitation is found
around (0,0,1) with a weak dispersion perpendicular to the wavevector of the
incommensurate structure. The magnetic excitation has an energy gap of E ~ 4
meV and at (0,0,1) exactly corresponds to the Fincher mode previously studied
only along the incommensurate wavevector.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Electron-phonon effects and transport in carbon nanotubes
We calculate the electron-phonon scattering and binding in semiconducting
carbon nanotubes, within a tight binding model. The mobility is derived using a
multi-band Boltzmann treatment. At high fields, the dominant scattering is
inter-band scattering by LO phonons corresponding to the corners K of the
graphene Brillouin zone. The drift velocity saturates at approximately half the
graphene Fermi velocity. The calculated mobility as a function of temperature,
electric field, and nanotube chirality are well reproduced by a simple
interpolation formula. Polaronic binding give a band-gap renormalization of ~70
meV, an order of magnitude larger than expected. Coherence lengths can be quite
long but are strongly energy dependent.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure
Placing Poverty in Context: A Case Study
The “poverty-in-context” approach to understanding poverty is shaped by the needs and priorities of a particular context, and it can be used as the basis for identifying pro-poor projects in local strategies such as City Development Plans. A key argument for the introduction of the City Development Plans initiative (2007–2012) in India was to move away from national conceptions of and responses to poverty and to instead focus on engaging with local understandings of poverty. Through a case study of the City Development Plan initiative in Trivandrum, the capital city of the Kerala state in southern India, we argue that an understanding of poverty at the local level did not accommodate contextual needs and priorities; consequently, we develop a poverty-in-context approach based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with various stakeholders in the case study area. The article concludes by suggesting how in the future a poverty-in-context approach might be used to shape pro-poor policy in general and preparation of City Development Plans in particular
Soliton excitations in halogen-bridged mixed-valence binuclear metal complexes
Motivated by recent stimulative observations in halogen (X)-bridged binuclear
transition-metal (M) complexes, which are referred to as MMX chains, we study
solitons in a one-dimensional three-quarter-filled charge-density-wave system
with both intrasite and intersite electron-lattice couplings. Two distinct
ground states of MMX chains are reproduced and the soliton excitations on them
are compared. In the weak-coupling region, all the solitons are degenerate to
each other and are uniquely scaled by the band gap, whereas in the
strong-coupling region, they behave differently deviating from the scenario in
the continuum limit. The soliton masses are calculated and compared with those

Nonadiabatic approach to dimerization gap and optical absorption coefficient of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model
An analytical nonadiabatic approach has been developed to study the
dimerization gap and the optical absorption coefficient of the
Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model where the electrons interact with dispersive quantum
phonons. By investigating quantitatively the effects of quantum phonon
fluctuations on the gap order and the optical responses in this system, we show
that the dimerization gap is much more reduced by the quantum lattice
fluctuations than the optical absorption coefficient is. The calculated optical
absorption coefficient and the density of states do not have the
inverse-square-root singularity, but have a peak above the gap edge and there
exist a significant tail below the peak. The peak of optical absorption
spectrum is not directly corresponding to the dimerized gap. Our results of the
optical absorption coefficient agree well with those of the experiments in both
the shape and the peak position of the optical absorption spectrum.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. to be published in PR
Differential susceptibility to plasticity: a 'missing link' between gene-culture co-evolution and neuropsychiatric spectrum disorders?
Brüne's proposal that erstwhile 'vulnerability' genes need to be reconsidered as 'plasticity' genes, given the potential for certain environments to yield increased positive function in the same domain as potential dysfunction, has implications for psychiatric nosology as well as a more dynamic understanding of the relationship between genes and culture. In addition to validating neuropsychiatric spectrum disorder nosologies by calling for similar methodological shifts in gene-environment-interaction studies, Brüne's position elevates the importance of environmental contexts - inclusive of socio-cultural variables - as mechanisms that contribute to clinical presentation. We assert that when models of susceptibility to plasticity and neuropsychiatric spectrum disorders are concomitantly considered, a new line of inquiry emerges into the co-evolution and co-determination of socio-cultural contexts and endophenotypes. This presents potentially unique opportunities, benefits, challenges, and responsibilities for research and practice in psychiatry
Barley grain (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content:effects of transcript and sequence variation in genes encoding the corresponding synthase and endohydrolase enzymes
The composition of plant cell walls is important in determining cereal end uses. Unlike other widely consumed cereal grains barley is comparatively rich in (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan, a source of dietary fibre. Previous work showed Cellulose synthase-like genes synthesise (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan in several tissues. HvCslF6 encodes a grain (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan synthase, whereas the function of HvCslF9 is unknown. Here, the relationship between mRNA levels of HvCslF6, HvCslF9, HvGlbI (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan endohydrolase, and (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content was studied in developing grains of four barley cultivars. HvCslF6 was differentially expressed during mid (8-15 DPA) and late (38 DPA) grain development stages while HvCslF9 transcript was only clearly detected at 8-10 DPA. A peak of HvGlbI expression was detected at 15 DPA. Differences in transcript abundance across the three genes could partially explain variation in grain (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content in these genotypes. Remarkably narrow sequence variation was found within the HvCslF6 promoter and coding sequence and does not explain variation in (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content. Our data emphasise the genotype-dependent accumulation of (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan during barley grain development and a role for the balance between hydrolysis and synthesis in determining (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan content, and suggests that other regulatory sequences or proteins are likely to be involved in this trait in developing grain.Guillermo Garcia-Gimenez, Joanne Russell, Matthew K. Motivations of women who organized others for prostitution: Evidence from a female prison in China
This article discusses women’s involvement in sex work management – an offence defined under section 358 of the 1997 Chinese Criminal Law and one of the re-emerged areas of illegality following the economic reforms since 1978. It first provides the historical context, legislative background and relevant sections of the Chinese vice laws so as to help make sense of the data obtained. Then it discusses the methodological issues before presenting the empirical findings to explore the socio-demographic profile of the incarcerated female sex work organizers who participated in this study and their motivations for organizing others for prostitution. Based on empirical data, this article explores the impact of social conditions on female offenders in China’s reform era and also the effects of the anti-prostitution policy in the country. Moreover, through a Chinese case study, it makes contributions to broader scholarship on the sex trade regulation. It concludes with a couple of implications for policy and practice
Does individual learning styles influence the choice to use a web-based ECG learning programme in a blended learning setting?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The compressed curriculum in modern knowledge-intensive medicine demands useful tools to achieve approved learning aims in a limited space of time. Web-based learning can be used in different ways to enhance learning. Little is however known regarding its optimal utilisation. Our aim was to investigate if the individual learning styles of medical students influence the choice to use a web-based ECG learning programme in a blended learning setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The programme, with three types of modules (learning content, self-assessment questions and interactive ECG interpretation training), was offered on a voluntary basis during a face to face ECG learning course for undergraduate medical students. The Index of Learning Styles (ILS) and a general questionnaire including questions about computer and Internet usage, preferred future speciality and prior experience of E-learning were used to explore different factors related to the choice of using the programme or not.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>93 (76%) out of 123 students answered the ILS instrument and 91 the general questionnaire. 55 students (59%) were defined as users of the web-based ECG-interpretation programme. Cronbach's alpha was analysed with coefficients above 0.7 in all of the four dimensions of ILS. There were no significant differences with regard to learning styles, as assessed by ILS, between the user and non-user groups; Active/Reflective; Visual/Verbal; Sensing/Intuitive; and Sequential/Global (p = 0.56-0.96). Neither did gender, prior experience of E-learning or preference for future speciality differ between groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Among medical students, neither learning styles according to ILS, nor a number of other characteristics seem to influence the choice to use a web-based ECG programme. This finding was consistent also when the usage of the different modules in the programme were considered. Thus, the findings suggest that web-based learning may attract a broad variety of medical students.</p
