Evidences of spin-temperature in Dynamic Nuclear Polarization: an exact computation of the EPR spectrum
In dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments, the compound is driven
out-of-equilibrium by microwave (MW) irradiation of the radical electron spins.
Their stationary state has been recently probed via electron double resonance
(ELDOR) techniques showing, at low temperature, a broad depolarization of the
electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum under microwave irradiation. In
this theoretical manuscript, we develop a numerical method to compute exactly
the EPR spectrum in presence of dipolar interactions. Our results reproduce the
observed broad depolarisation and provide a microscopic justification for
spectral diffusion mechanism. We show the validity of the spin-temperature
approach for typical radical concentration used in dissolution DNP protocols.
In particular once the interactions are properly taken into account, the
spin-temperature is consistent with the non-monotonic behavior of the EPR
spectrum with a wide minimum around the irradiated frequency.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Title and abstract change
Screening for Tuberculosis in Health Care Workers. Experience in an Italian Teaching Hospital
Health care workers (HCW) are particularly at risk of acquiring tuberculosis (TB), even in countries with low TB incidence. Therefore, TB screening in HCW is a useful prevention strategy in countries with both low and high TB incidence. Tuberculin skin test (TST) is widely used although it suffers of low specificity; on the contrary, the in vitro enzyme immunoassay tests (IGRA) show superior specificity and sensitivity but are more expensive. The present study reports the results of a three-year TB surveillance among HCW in a large teaching hospital in Rome, using TST (by standard Mantoux technique) and IGRA (by QuantiFERON-TB) as first- and second-level screening tests, respectively. Out of 2290 HCW enrolled, 141 (6.1%) had a positive TST; among them, 99 (70.2%) underwent the IGRA and 16 tested positive (16.1%). The frequency of HCW tested positive for TB seems not far from other experiences in low incidence countries. Our results confirm the higher specificity of IGRA, but, due to its higher cost, TST can be considered a good first level screening test, whose positive results should be further confirmed by IGRA before the patients undergo X-ray diagnosis and/or chemotherapy
Evaluation of the Effects of Anxiety on Behaviour and Physiological Parameters in VR Fire Simulations
This study considers the use of virtual reality technologies both to evaluate the optimal exodus paths from buildings and to analyze the behaviour of people in emergencies through the monitoring of physiological parameters. The degree of realism with which VR devices can simulate highly anxiogenic scenarios is considered. The experimentation is carried out on a school building and tested through a pilot trial where saturation, blood pressure, heart rate as well as the time of exodus are monitored. The variations of the peak values of physiological parameters highlight the influence of anxiogenic elements in the participant's state of anxiety

ESARDA 37th Annual Meeting Proceedings
The 37th ESARDA symposium on Safeguards and Nuclear Non-Proliferation was held in Manchester, United Kingdom from 19-21 May, 2015. The Symposium has been preceded by meetings of the ESARDA Working Groups on 18 May 2015. The event has once again been an opportunity for research organisations, safeguards authorities and nuclear plant operators to exchange information on new aspects of international safeguards and non-proliferation, as well as recent developments in nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation related research activities and their implications for the safeguards community.
The Proceedings contains the papers (118) submitted according to deadlines.JRC.E.8-Nuclear securit
