Orations on the victory of the Order of St John over the Turks in 1565 and on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta in 1566
The first Chapter General meeting of the Order of St John held after the victory over the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565, took place on 10 February of the following year. Before dealing with the agenda of the day, orations were delivered. One of these was presented by Augustinian Fr Spiritus Pelo Anguisciola who would yet deliver another oration, a month later, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta, in March 1566. The text of the latter had been published by Gian Francesco Abela in 1647. The texts of both orations -taken from original manuscripts discovered by the present author -are being reproduced in this paper. Gut mesenchymal stromal cells in immunity
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), first found in bone marrow (BM), are the structural architects of all organs, participating in most biological functions. MSCs possess tissue-specific signatures that allow their discrimination according to their origin and location. Among their multiple functions, MSCs closely interact with immune cells, orchestrating their activity to maintain overall homeostasis. The phenotype of tissue MSCs residing in the bowel overlaps with myofibroblasts, lining the bottom walls of intestinal crypts (pericryptal) or interspersed within intestinal submucosa (intercryptal). In Crohn’s disease, intestinal MSCs are tightly stacked in a chronic inflammatory milieu, which causes their enforced expression of Class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The absence of Class II MHC is a hallmark for immune-modulator and tolerogenic properties of normal MSCs and, vice versa, the expression of HLA-DR is peculiar to antigen presenting cells, that is, immune-activator cells. Interferon gamma (IFN) is responsible for induction of Class II MHC expression on intestinal MSCs. The reversal of myofibroblasts/MSCs from an immune-modulator to an activator phenotype in Crohn’s disease results in the formation of a fibrotic tube subverting the intestinal structure. Highly cited papers at the spanish domestic level
This paper presents a methodological proposal based on the identification of highly cited papers (HCPs) at domestic-level in the Spanish Public University System (SUPE), in order to find the most outstanding publications in the local context. The principal aim is to detect different activity and impact profiles among Spanish universities and differentiate those institutions that play a more significant role. To determine which and how many are the highly cited papers at the domestic level (HCP-DL) collected in the Web of Science, three citation thresholds (1, 5, and 10%) were established. Thematic classification in Incites/Essential Science Indicators areas is used. The results show a preponderance of HCPs in the field of Space Science, while the polytechnic universities have high visibility in the Computer Science area. It has been observed that the presence of HCPs in a given area is involved with universities specialized in teaching and research activities. In absolute terms, the big non-specialized universities are major producers of HCPs and hold the leading positions in our results. However, when efficiency is analyzed in relative terms, some small, specialized universities reveal themselves to be more efficient at producing HCPs (% of HCPs or citations per HCP). We think that this methodology, due to its simplicity, its ease of calculation, and the knowledge it provides, can be very useful to analyze the national systems of any country, in order to know the impact and visibility of the research carried out in its scientific institutions or research areas
CHANTI: a Fast and Efficient Charged Particle Veto Detector for the NA62 Experiment at CERN
The design, construction and test of a charged particle detector made of
scintillation counters read by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) is described.
The detector, which operates in vacuum and is used as a veto counter in the
NA62 experiment at CERN, has a single channel time resolution of 1.14 ns, a
spatial resolution of ~2.5 mm and an efficiency very close to 1 for penetrating
charged particles
Determination of the main bioaerosol components using chemical markers by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry
This work is part of an extensive research project aimed at the determination and characterization of bioaerosol with a
multidisciplinary approach. In this context, one of the main objectives of the project has been the development of a
comprehensive analytical method for the determination of different chemical biomarkers of the bioaerosol, by liquid
chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The following biomarkers have been considered, and
correlated to specific components of bioaerosol as unambiguous indicators: • ergosterol fungal components •
chlorophylls, phytosterols (stigmasterol and b-sitosterol), -tocoferol vegetable cells and algae • cholesterol animal
cells, vegetable cells and algae. • dipicolinic acid bacterial spores • muramic and meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid
bacterial cells To verify the method, to find diagnostic ratios and to calculate the appropriate conversion factors, fungal
spores, bacterial cells and spores, and algae of known species, commonly airborne, were analysed. The material was
subjected to freezing and de-freezing cycles, followed by extraction, hydrolysis and purification of the biomarkers. The
chromatographic separation of the bacterial biomarkers was achieved by using a polymeric column, based on
Hydrophilic Liquid Interaction with the electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection, whereas sterols and
chlorophylls were separated by a reversed phase column, coupled to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization –
tandem mass spectrometer. The optimized method was applied to environmental particulate matter sampled in an
outdoor site. Bacterial and fungal content was compared to the results obtained from the classical direct viable
counting method in the sampled particulate matte
Spanish named entity recognition in the biomedical domain
Named Entity Recognition in the clinical domain and in languages different from English has the difficulty of the absence of complete dictionaries, the informality of texts, the polysemy of terms, the lack of accordance in the boundaries of an entity, the scarcity of corpora and of other resources available. We present a Named Entity Recognition method for poorly resourced languages. A possible cause of misdiagnosis in tumors of the axilla: schwannoma of the brachial plexus
The Authors report a rare case of a 57 years old man affected by a left radial nerve schwannoma that occurred as an asymptomatic lesion of the axilla. At clinical examination the lump was undistinguishable from the most common axillary lymphadenopathy. A lymphoadenopathy was erroneously diagnosed with ultrasonography (US). This mistake was due to the low specificity of the instrumental methodology and to the rarity of an asymptomatic schwannoma of the infraclavicular brachial plexus.
The neoplasia was excised without using the microscope. In the early post-operative follow up, a “falling” attitude of the wirst, the
hand and the fingers appeared, peculiar for a lesion of the radial nerve. Furthermore a hypoaesthesia of the skin of first finger and of the first interosseus space was associated. The sensitive and motor electromyography showed a radial nerve suffering. The “stupor” of the nerve trunk was treated with steroid therapy for 7 days and the patient underwent to some series of neuro-rehabilitative physical therapy for 12 weeks. The postoperative total body CT, showed that the lesion was unique: therefore it was possible to exclude the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. After 28 months electromyography and axillary US were performed showing the complete resolution of the motor and sensitive deficit and the absence of local recurrence
