On the use of the MOORA method in the selection of investment projects

    Get PDF
As is well known, when faced with the problem of decision-making, involving several (eventually conflicting) objectives evaluated according to several criteria, multi-criteria analysis is one of the most appropriate methodologies to support the decision. The flexibility of multi-criteria decision analysis/making is one of its most recognized characteristics, which comes from the various methods that can be considered. Among them is the so-called MOORA (as the initials of Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio Analysis) method.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sky commons as a basis to explore the touristic potential of the Alqueva area (Portugal)

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the use of an unpolluted night sky as the basis for the differentiation of a rural tourism destination. As it has been pointed out in other studies the use of the commons as part of the tourism offer may lead to situations of overuse and pollution. In the present case it is shown that by having awareness of the tourism potential of this common resource, stakeholders of the Alentejo Region joined efforts to mitigate all the sources of pollution. A resource that was being neglected has become in the center of preservation policies of local public authorities of this region.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

Serie: Applied mathematics, vol. 8"Traveling waves arising in detonation physics are described by the reactive Euler equations obtained in the fluid dynamical limit of the Boltzmann equation for a binary reactive mixture. The hydrodynamic linear stability of the detonation wave solution is investigated with a normal mode analysis. Numerical simulations are performed for both the detonation wave solution and its linear stability.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/28795/2006, PEst-C/MAT/UI0013/201

Influence of the reaction heat on the linear stability spectra of steady detonation in the kinetic frame

    Get PDF
The structure and linear stability of the one-dimensional steady overdriven detonation wave supported by a chemical reaction of type A+AB+BA+A \rightleftharpoons B + B are examined in the frame of the Boltzmann equation extended to chemically reacting gases. The structure of the steady wave solution is determined solving the system of the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions supplemented with the rate law, in a chemical regime which corresponds to the early stage of the reaction process. % The response of such steady wave solution to one-dimensional disturbances is investigated using a normal mode linear analysis which leads to an initial value problem for the state variable disturbances in the reaction zone. % Some results are obtained numerically in order to describe the stability spectra of the steady solution. The emphasis of the present study is on the influence of the reaction heat on the linear stability spectra.Centro de Matemática da UM (CMAT)Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/MAT/68615/2006SFRH/BD/28795/2006; PTDC/MAT/68615/200

On the dynamics and linear stability of one-dimensional steady detonation waves

    Get PDF
A detailed analysis of the dynamics and linear stability of a steady one-dimensional detonation wave propagating in a binary reactive system with an Arrhenius chemical kinetics of type A + A = B + B is carried out. Starting from the frame of the kinetic theory, the binary reactive mixture is modelled at the mesoscopic scale by the reactive Boltzmann equation (BE), assuming hard sphere cross sections for elastic collisions and step cross sections with activation energy for reactive interactions. The corresponding hydrodynamic limit is based on a second-order non-equilibrium solution of the BE obtained in a previous paper, using the Chapman-Enskog method in a chemical regime for which the reactive interactions are less frequent than the elastic collisions. The resulting hydrodynamic governing equations are the reactive Euler equations, including a rate law which exhibits an explicit dependence on the reaction heat and forward activation energy of the chemical reaction. These equations are used to describe the spatial structure of the steady detonation wave solution and investigate how this structure varies with the reaction heat. The response of the steady solution to one-dimensional disturbances is studied using a normal mode linear approach which leads to an initial value problem for the state variable disturbances in the reaction zone. The stability problem is treated numerically, using an iterative shooting technique to determine the unstable modes. The analysis here developed emphasizes the influence of the chemical reaction heat and activation energy on the linear stability spectra.CMAT-UM, FCT Project Est-C/MAT/UI0013/2011, FEDER Funds - COMPETE, FCT Phd Grant SFRH/BD/28795/200

Consumers economic behavior and emotions: the case of iphone 6 in neuromarketing

    Get PDF
In the current era, consumers’ fascination for many notable brands in the market is rising considerably. This effect shows that many companies are trying to consistently reproduce this effect in their current (and potential) customers and thus look for creating a strong identification with their brand(s), what allows the company to add new economic value. However, the vast majority of these companies finds limitations in the way traditional marketing works to achieve a necessary emotional state for the generation of a brand identification. Thus it is necessary to go further and use more effective tools for the study of consumer behavior. An interesting possibility is the use of Neuromarketing, emphasizing research methods for studying people’s emotion feelings, by facing stimuli related to a specific brand. From this analysis, companies may adjust their commercial and economic strategy to take advantage from their brands competitive positioning in the market.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Excess Clustering on Large Scales in the MegaZ DR7 Photometric Redshift Survey

    Get PDF
We observe a large excess of power in the statistical clustering of luminous red galaxies in the photometric SDSS galaxy sample called MegaZ DR7. This is seen over the lowest multipoles in the angular power spectra C-l in four equally spaced redshift bins between 0: 45 <= z <= 0: 65. However, it is most prominent in the highest redshift band at similar to 4 sigma and it emerges at an effective scale k less than or similar to 0: 01 h Mpc(-1). Given that MegaZ DR7 is the largest cosmic volume galaxy survey to date (3.3(Gpch(-1))(3)) this implies an anomaly on the largest physical scales probed by galaxies. Alternatively, this signature could be a consequence of it appearing at the most systematically susceptible redshift. There are several explanations for this excess power that range from systematics to new physics. We test the survey, data, and excess power, as well as possible origins
