An unusual case of suicidal carbon monoxide poisoning committed using a portable barbecue grill
Źródłem trującego gazu, mającego posłużyć samobójcy do odebrania sobie życia, bywają zazwyczaj spaliny silników samochodowych i domowych piecyków gazowych w instalacjach odgrzewających wodę uwalniane w zamkniętych pomieszczeniach. W niniejszej pracy pragniemy przedstawić nietypowy przypadek, jedyny
w historii krakowskiego Zakładu, w którym do uzyskania wysokiego stężenia tlenku węgla wykorzystano palące się brykiety węglowe w typowym, przenośnym grillu ogrodowym.
Opisując zagadnienie, omówiono aktualne tło i obowiązujące uwarunkowania
Fatal carbon monoxide poisonings are quite frequent in forensic medicine. Forensic pathologists
usually rule them as accidents but suicides are also common - in Poland just as
much as in other European countries. The most common source of toxic carbon monoxide
is car exhaust or fumes from furnace and gas heating installations in closed spaces. In
this paper the authors present an unusual case of a charcoal grill suicide (first described
in Poland) committed, as a result of physical illness, by a 65-year-old man in his own
house in Kraków. The review of the literature shows that such a method of suicide is very
rare in Europe and North America although grilling is a very popular cooking method
and leisure activity. We observed that the trend of applying this new method in suicides
is a copycat to cases that took place in the countries of Far East at the end of the 20th century.
It became one of the most common method of committing suicide in Japan, Taiwan,
Hong Kong and South Korea. The problem was widely discussed
Death as a result of autoerotic activities : criminalistic, legal, forensic-medical and psychological aspects
abstract The aim of the paper is to discuss issues related to cases of death during autoerotic activities (defined in international literature as autoerotic death) on the basis of criminalistic, legal, forensic-medical and psychological knowledge. These are events in which death usually occurs as a result of rapid suffocation (autoerotic asphyxia, sexual asphyxia) due to the blocking of respiratory openings, hanging or strangulation, in the course of activities undertaken in order to evoke defined experiences of a sexual nature. A fatal consequence should be investigated rather as an unfortunate accident than the conscious intention of the victim/ perpetrator of the incident. As in the case of suicide, the victim is at the same time the perpetrator of the action, although other people may also have participated in the behaviour or provoked it. Some cases of this type must surely number among the dark figure of crimes. The case selected and described in this paper was studied at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków. It constituted both an example and a starting point for broader analysis of the issue with reference to various fields of science. Incidents consisting in self-strangulation with the aim of achieving sexual satisfaction have been noted by sexologists, and in situations ending in death, such cases are analysed by law enforcement agencies with the participation of forensic medical doctors. Cases of death as a result of autoerotic activities thus requires a complex, interdisciplinary approach in order to explain them
Distribution of facial injuries in cases involving a fall on a flat surface
Aim of the study : Determination whether injuries identified on the victim’s head were caused by a blow made by another person or by a fall resulting in hitting a surface.
Material and methods : An analysis of archive photographs taken routinely at the Forensic Institute in Krakow, Poland, to document post-mortem examinations in the years 2004–2012.
Results : A comparative analysis of the images clearly shows that certain areas are much more vulnerable to contact with the surface and thus to injuries; other areas are clearly protected in the case of a fall on a flat surface.
Conclusions : In the case of a fall on a solid, flat surface, injuries are located first of all on brow ridges, nasal bridge and nasal apex, on the malar area and on the front surface of the chin. The following areas are clearly protected: eyelids, eyebrows, medial and upper parts of the cheeks, lips and the lower part of the chin
