Soy milk is a product processed soybean extract that resembles cow's milk. High protein content makes soy milk as highly nutritious vegetable milk. But the beany flavor of the resulting lead soy milk consumption levels are relatively low. One way of improving the quality of soy milk with a probiotic drink that process into soy milk kefir. The purpose of this study to determine the effect of the concentration of skim milk to soy milk kefir quality, namely in terms of the physical and chemical properties, microbiological and organoleptic. The study was conducted in two stages: determining the length of fermentation and then proceed with the manufacture of soy milk with the addition of different concentrations of skim milk of four treatments that control, the addition of skim milk concentration 0%, 4% and 8%. This research using completely randomized design (CRD). The result showed the addition of skim milk concentration effect on total of bacteria acid lactic (BAL), total yeast, colour, and flavor of soy milk kefir. The addition of skim milk concentration causes an increase in total BAL, total yeast and pH. For organoleptic show that the colour and flavor of soy milk kefir with a concentration of 8% skim milk is preferred compared with the three other treatments

Uneven Urban Metabolisms: Toward an Integrative (Ex)urban Political Ecology of Sustainability in and Around the City

Expanding cities present a sustainability challenge, as the uneven proliferation of hybrid landscape types becomes a major feature of 21st century urbanization. To fully address this challenge, scholars must consider the broad range of land uses that being produced beyond the urban core and how land use patterns in one location may be tied to patterns in other locations. Diverse threads within political ecology provide useful insights into the dynamics that produce uneven urbanization. Specifically, urban political ecology (UPE) details how economic power influences the development decision-making that proliferate urban forms, patterns of uneven access, and modes of decision-making, frequently viewing resource extraction and development through the urban metabolism lens. The political ecology of exurbia, or, perhaps, an exurban political ecology (ExPE), examines the symbolic role nature and the rural have played in conservation and development efforts that produce social, economic, and environmental conflicts. While UPE approaches tend to privilege macroscale dynamics, ExPE emphasizes the role of landowners, managers, and other actors in struggles over the production of exurban space, including through decision-making institutions and within the context of broader political economic forces. Three case studies illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, demonstrating the benefits for and giving suggestions on how to integrate their insights into urban sustainability research. Integrated political ecology approaches demonstrate how political-economic processes at a variety of scales produce diverse local sustainability responses

    MicroRNA Regulation of IGF-1

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Low levels of IGF-1, a known neuroprotectant, correspond to aging and increased severity of stroke. We have previously demonstrated that there is an inverse relationship between the presence of anti-let7f or anti-miR-1 and levels of IGF-1. Further, the localization of let-7f was found to be within the microglial cell population. We hypothesize that let7f and miR-1 directly bind to the 3’ UTR region of IGF-1. Microglial cells (EOC-20) will be transfected with an IGF-1 clone with a luciferase tag. IGF-1 synthesis following treatment with antagomirs to either miR-1 or let7f will be tested by a luciferase assay
