Welding Fumes Exposure Decreases Forced Vital Capacity But Not Height Among Welders
Background: Welding fumes caused the decreasing of forced vital capacity (FVC). The study aimed to identify several factors related to FVC.Methods: The subject of this cross-sectional study consisted of welders in an automobile manufacture outskirt of Jakarta in 2012. We used purposive sampling selection. The assessments of FVC were using spirometri. Exposure fumes value of the workplace based on the assessements of the factory. Demographic and employment data was selected from interview.Results: A number 124 out of 150 welders which aged between 19-55 years who\u27s had 1-16 years worked. Exposure fumes value was 15 mg/m3 in the factory. The welding fume exposure decreased FVC [regressioncoeffi cient (r) = -0.004; 95% confi dence interval (CI) = -0.01;-0.00]. On the other site, those who had more taller height had higher FVC (r = 0.035; 95% CI = 0.02;0.05).Conclusions: Welding fumes exposure was decreasing the FVC, but those who had more taller height had higher FVC among welders. Welding Fumes Exposure, Body Mass Index and Duration of Smoking Decrease Physical Fi Tness Among Welders
Background: Welding fumes exposure caused health disorders, one of them are decreasing the level of physical fi tness. This study aimed to analyze the effect of welding fumes exposure with the level of welder'sphysical fi tness.Methods: This cross-sectional using purposive selected by sampling selection method among welders in the muffl er factory at outskirt of Jakarta in 2012. Several characteristic demography, occupational history,and habits were obtained through interview. Welding fumes exposure obtained by semi quantitative method. Physical fi tness was obtained by physical examination using Queen's College Step Test.Results: The total of subjects in this study were 110 people, 19-55 years of age, total duration of work between 1-16 years. We found that there were no signifi cant association between the age and physical activity of respondents with the level of welder physical fi tness. We noted negative correlation between the total fume exposure, body mass index, duration of smoking habits and the level of welder physical fi tness. The correlation were: the total fume exposure [regression coeffi cient (r)= -0,07; 95% confi dence interval (CI)= -0,10;-0,04]; body mass index (r= -0,38; 95% CI= -0,64;-0,09); and duration of smoking habits (r= -0,16; 95% CI= -0,28;-0,04).Conclusion: Increase in total welding fumes exposure, body mass index, and duration of smoking habit will be decrease welder physical fi tness. A Statistical Model to Assess Indirect CO2 Emissions of the UAE Residential Sector
This study presents a regional bottom-up model for assessing space cooling energy and related greenhouse gas emissions. The model was developed with the aim of improving the quality and quantity of cooling energy and emission data, especially for the benefit of local decision making. Based on a benchmarking study, a representative archetype was developed, simulation software used and linear statistical model constructed. This model explores the way in which CO2 emission levels are affected by different energy efficiency measures to reduce cooling energy consumption in buildings. The analysis showed that improving building energy efficiency could generate considerable carbon emissions reduction credits with competitive benefit. The developed model was found to be capable in selecting cost-effective, environmentally-preferred building efficiency measures and evaluating the future trend of CO2 emissions in the residential building of Al-Ain city
Analysis of residual acrylamide in field crops
Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a widely used product for a large number
of applications. Many of the emerging applications are in the area
of agriculture. PAM is blended with pesticides as a thickening
agent, added to irrigation water to minimize soil erosion, and used
as a medium for hydroponically grown crops. Although PAM is
stable and considered to be safe, residual acrylamide (AMD)
monomer is a neurotoxin and animal carcinogen. In this work,
residual AMD is analyzed in a variety of crops that were grown
under PAM treatment to stabilize soil erosion. Corn, potatoes,
sugar beets, and beans are analyzed for AMD. A sample of the crop
is homogenized with water, and the water layer is filtered and
derivatized with bromine to form 2,3-dibromopropionamide. The
derivative is then extracted with ethyl acetate and converted to the
more stable 2-propenamide prior to gas chromatographic analysis
using an electron capture detector. Capillary Carbowax columns
were used. All tested crops show < 10 ppb AMD. Furthermore, it
seems that AMD is not stable when it comes in contact with the
crop tissues. In the presence of plant tissues, AMD will disappear as
a function of time. Beans blended with 100 ppb AMD for 10 min
yield a recovery of only 22%. For a bean sample that was soaked
with 500 ppb AMD solution for 18 h, the recovery is 7%. Other
crops show different AMD recoveries
Primary subcutaneous cyst hydatic disease in proximal thigh: an unusual localisation: a case report
BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal hydatidosis is very rare and represents 1% – 5.4% of all cases of echinococcosis. On clinical basis, infection mimics a soft-tissue tumor, and the preoperative radiological diagnosis is very important to avoid biopsy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual case of primary subcutaneous hydatidosis in proximity to vastus lateralis muscle. It was diagnosed according to the computed tomography appearance, clinical and pathological findings. A 43 year old female patient was admitted with a history of pain at proximal thigh for the last 30 days. On physical examination, a mass which was 4 × 5 cm in diameter, painful and erythamatous, was palpated over greater trochanter. Sedimentation rate was 40 mm in the first hour. CT (Computed Tomography) scan demonstrated, a soft tissue mass with central cystic component in the subcutaneous tissue near vastus lateralis muscle. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed a pericystic structure, which consisted of connective tissue and scattered hyaline cells showing a necrotic basophilic structure that resembled a cuticular membrane. Treatment with high dose albendazole was conducted for 4 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates that echinococcal disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of every cystic mass in every anatomic location, especially when they occur in areas where the disease is endemic
