    The Residency Application Abyss: Insights and Advice

    Most medical students apply for residency training upon completion of medical school. The choice of specialty is one of a student’s first major career decisions, and the application process often results in considerable anxiety, as it is competitive, unpredictable, and requires a significant investment of time and money. This article, which addresses several important facets of the residency application using both experiential and evidence-based data, is organized chronologically into sections that describe a logical approach to applying for residency: choice of a specialty, the personal statement, the interview day, and developing a rank list. A list of relevant websites is also included. This paper is a resource that provides timely and tangible guidance to medical students applying for residency training

    Small for gestational age associated with short stature during adolescence

    This study examined the relationship between intrauterine growth retardation and adolescent stature in a sample of 1510 White subjects (754 males and 756 females) who were evaluated at birth and at the ages of 15, 16, and 17 years. The subjects were classified into two groups based on birthweight, small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA), corresponding respectively to values below the 10th, and between the 11th and 99th, percentiles of gestational age and sex. Results showed that boys and girls born prematurely (gestational age 37 weeks of gestation). In contrast, those born SGA were significantly shorter than their counterparts born AGA. The average reduction in stature was 4.9 cm for males and 2.9 cm for females. When the analysis included adjustments for parental stature (and adolescent's age at menarche for females), the average reduction in stature equaled about 3.5 cm for males and 2.0 cm for females.     Scaling Digital Humanities on (and utilising) the Web

    The work of a humanities e-researcher is scoped by the possibilities offered in digital artefacts: in their ever increasing number and their distribution and access over the Internet. This is recognised through a shift to an increasingly data-intensive method characterised as the "fourth paradigm" of e-Research and enabled by the new computational tools and techniques that characterise e-Science and e-Research. To realise these systems we propose an approach built upon the defining properties of the Web: adopting the REST style and Linked Data principles to enable the radical publication, sharing, and linking of data for, and by, researchers. Within this Resource Oriented architecture we utilise distinct but interwoven models to represent services, data collections, workflows, and -- so to simplify the rapid development of integrated applications to explore specific findings -- the domain of the application. We illustrate this conceptual framework in a prototype system for enhancing the application of Music Information Retrieval workflows, driven by several related aims: to enable MIR researchers to utilise these datasets through incorporation in their research systems and workflows; to publish MIR research output on the Semantic Web linked to existing datasets; and to present MIR research output, with cross-referencing to other linked data sources, for manipulation and evaluation by MIR and musicology researchers and re-use within the wider Semantic Web and Digital Humanities communities. As an illustration of a specific domain-driven application with which to explore findings, we gather and publish metadata describing audio collections derived from the country of an artist. Genre analysis over these collections, and integration of this analysis with collection metadata enables us to ask: "how country is my country?"

    Physiological responses of Oxyrrhis marina to a diet of virally infected Emiliania huxleyi

    The coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi forms some of the largest phytoplankton blooms in the ocean. The rapid demise of these blooms has been linked to viral infections. E. huxleyi abundance, distribution, and nutritional status make them an important food source for the heterotrophic protists which are classified as microzooplankton in marine food webs. In this study we investigated the fate of E. huxleyi (CCMP 374) infected with virus strain EhV-86 in a simple predator-prey interaction. The ingestion rates of Oxyrrhis marina were significantly lower (between 26.9 and 50.4%) when fed virus-infected E. huxleyi cells compared to non-infected cells. Despite the lower ingestion rates, O. marina showed significantly higher growth rates (between 30 and 91.3%) when fed infected E. huxleyi cells, suggesting higher nutritional value and/or greater assimilation of infected E. huxleyi cells. No significant differences were found in O. marina cell volumes or fatty acids profiles. These results show that virally infected E. huxleyi support higher growth rates of single celled heterotrophs and in addition to the “viral shunt” hypothesis, viral infections may also divert more carbon to mesozooplankton grazers

The mol­ecule has a central cavity that is defined by the 18-membered ring identified by the N2O4 donor atom set and two 15-membered rings with N3O2 donor atom sets. The toluene­sulfonamide N atom adopts an exo orientation with respect to the central cavity, and the tosyl group is oriented on one side of the aza-bridging strand that connects the bridgehead N atoms

    16-09 Transportation Mobility Among Low-Income, Transportation Disadvantaged Older Adults Living in a Low Density Urban Environment Using Innovative Data Collection Methods

    This study investigates the transportation disadvantage that low-income, older adults face on an individual basis. To accomplish this, research team members custom designed an innovative “travel diary” app, MyAmble, which tracks planned, completed, failed/uncompleted trips, and unserved trips in its Trip Planner module. In addition to the typical transportation planning data (e.g. origin, destination, mode), MyAmble collects data related to the completed or failed/uncompleted trip’s impact on the participant’s mood and quality of life. MyAmble utilizes 3 additional modules (Challenge Logger, Travel Buddy, and Travel History) to collect qualitative data related to the role that transportation plays in the participant’s life and history. The field test shows significant promise in terms of capturing data on quantity and impact of missed trips, particularly as they relate to psycho-social-emotional well-being and autonomy; however, the selected population of low-income, community-dwelling older adults face health challenges that may have limited some participants’ ability to utilize the app. The study generates critical feedback for continued improvements to MyAmble. Participants expressed positive feedback and strong support for the app, specifically the Travel Buddy feature. The data generated by MyAmble provide new insights into the challenges facing environmental justice communities
