    A large advanced freight aircraft: F-81

    Commercial air freight operations have grown in importance in recent years, due mainly to cost reductions caused by increasing aircraft and freight-terminal efficiencies. The bulk of this traffic is carried in the underfloor holds of wide-body passenger aircraft, but there is a significant sector of the market served by 'dedicated' freighters such as the 747F and DC8-63F. These aircraft are often equipped with standard containers and pallets which are loaded at factories or freight depots. The largest and most efficient container is the 8 ft x 8 ft x 20 ft size NASA felt the need to study the air-freight market and commissioned the extensive C.L.A.S.S. study (Ref.1). This report suggested that significant operating cost savings would be required, together with improved ground interfaces, to make more inroads into the surface transport market. It studied the economics of aircraft derived from current types, together with new designs. The former was more immediately attractive, but a market existed for new aircraft from the mid 1990's. The most attractive new type would be a long range aircraft with payload in the 75 to 165 ton range. The lower size aircraft was slightly more economic, but would pose grave airport frequency saturation problems and therefore a larger aircraft was preferable. Aircraft much above the 165 ton class however, would lead to development costs higher than the market could stand. An aircraft of about 165 tons payload seemed to be a good solution which could be made more attractive if it were designed to satisfy both civil and military requirements, thus spreading development costs. This philosophy was aimed at during the design of the Lockheed C-141 but too much emphasis was placed on military properties and no civil versions were sold. This should be avoided on a new design which should be capable of augmenting and partially replacing current fleets of 747F, DC10 CF and Lockheed C-5A aircraft … [cont.]

    Storage stability of whole and nibbed, conventional and high oleic peanuts (<i>Arachis hypogeae </i>L.)

    Peanuts are increasingly being used as nibbed ingredients in cereal bars, confectionery and breakfast cereals. However, studies on their oxidative stability in this format are limited. Storage trials to determine the stability to oxidation were carried out on whole and nibbed kernels of conventional (CP) and high oleic (HOP) peanuts, with respect to temperature and modified atmosphere packaging. HOP exhibited the highest oxidative stability, with a lag phase in whole kernels of 12–15 weeks before significant oxidation occurred. HOP also showed higher levels of intrinsic antioxidants, a trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) of 70 mMol equivalence and radical scavenging percentage (RSP) of 99.8 % at the beginning of storage trials, whereas CP showed values of 40 mMol and 81.2 %, respectively. The intrinsic antioxidants at the beginning of these storage trials were shown to affect the peroxide value (PV), where RSP and TEAC decreased, and PV increased. Therefore, in peanuts the processing format (nibbed or whole) had the highest influence on susceptibility of lipid oxidation, highest to lowest importance: processing format &gt; temperature &gt; atmospheric conditions

    A zonal safety analysis methodology for preliminary aircraft systems and structural design

    Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA) is a major part of the civil aircraft safety assessment process described in Aerospace Recommended Practice 4761 (ARP4761). It considers safety effects that systems/items installed in the same zone (i.e. a defined area within the aircraft body) may have on each other. Although the ZSA may be conducted at any design stage, it would be most cost-effective to do it during preliminary design, due to the greater opportunity for influence on system and structural designs and architecture. The existing ZSA methodology of ARP4761 was analysed, but it was found to be more suitable for detail design rather than preliminary design. The authors therefore developed a methodology that would be more suitable for preliminary design and named it the Preliminary Zonal Safety Analysis (PZSA). This new methodology was verified by means of the use of a case study, based on the NASA N3-X project. Several lessons were learnt from the case study, leading to refinement of the proposed method. These lessons included focusing on the positional layout of major components for the zonal safety inspection, and using the Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)/Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to identify system external failure modes. The resulting PZSA needs further refinement, but should prove to be a useful design tool for the preliminary design process

    The measurement of household socio-economic position in tuberculosis prevalence surveys: a sensitivity analysis.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the robustness of socio-economic inequalities in tuberculosis (TB) prevalence surveys. DESIGN: Data were drawn from the TB prevalence survey conducted in Lusaka Province, Zambia, in 2005-2006. We compared TB socio-economic inequalities measured through an asset-based index (Index 0) using principal component analysis (PCA) with those observed using three alternative indices: Index 1 and Index 2 accounted respectively for the biases resulting from the inclusion of urban assets and food-related variables in Index 0. Index 3 was built using regression-based analysis instead of PCA to account for the effect of using a different assets weighting strategy. RESULTS: Household socio-economic position (SEP) was significantly associated with prevalent TB, regardless of the index used; however, the magnitude of inequalities did vary across indices. A strong association was found for Index 2, suggesting that the exclusion of food-related variables did not reduce the extent of association between SEP and prevalent TB. The weakest association was found for Index 1, indicating that the exclusion of urban assets did not lead to higher extent of TB inequalities. CONCLUSION: TB socio-economic inequalities seem to be robust to the choice of SEP indicator. The epidemiological meaning of the different extent of TB inequalities is unclear. Further studies are needed to confirm our conclusions

    Integration of InSAR time series analysis and water vapour correction for mapping postseismic deformation after the 2003 Bam (Iran) Earthquake

    Atmospheric water-vapor effects represent a major limitation of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, including InSAR time-series (TS) approaches (e.g., persistent or permanent scatterers and small-baseline subset). For the first time, this paper demonstrates the use of InSAR TS with precipitable water-vapor (InSAR TS + PWV) correction model for deformation mapping. We use MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) near-infrafred (NIR) water-vapor data for InSAR atmospheric correction when they are available. For the dates when the NIR data are blocked by clouds, an atmospheric phase screen (APS) model has been developed to estimate atmospheric effects using partially water-vapor-corrected interferograms. Cross validation reveals that the estimated APS agreed with MERIS-derived line-of-sight path delays with a small standard deviation (0.3–0.5 cm) and a high correlation coefficient (0.84–0.98). This paper shows that a better TS of postseismic motion after the 2003 Bam (Iran) earthquake is achievable after reduction of water-vapor effects using the InSAR TS + PWV technique with coincident MERIS NIR water-vapor data

    Shear banding, aging and noise dynamics in soft glassy materials

    The `soft glassy rheology' (SGR) model gives an appealing account of the flow of nonergodic soft materials in terms of the local yield dynamics of mesoscopic elements. Newtonian, power-law, and yield-stress fluid regimes arise on varying a `noise temperature', x. Here we extend the model, to capture the idea that the noise is largely caused by yield itself. The extended model can account for the viscosity-bifurcation and shear-banding effects reported recently in a wide range of soft materials.     Slow Coarsening in Jammed Athermal Soft Particle Suspensions

    We simulate a densely jammed, athermal assembly of repulsive soft particles immersed in a solvent. Starting from an initial condition corresponding to a quench from a high temperature, we find nontrivial slow dynamics driven by a gradual release of stored elastic energy, with the root mean squared particle speed decaying as a power law in time with a fractional exponent. This decay is accompanied by the presence within the assembly of spatially localized and temporally intermittent “hot spots” of nonaffine deformation, connected by long-ranged swirls in the velocity field, reminiscent of the local plastic events and long-ranged elastic propagation that have been intensively studied in sheared amorphous materials. The pattern of hot spots progressively coarsens, with the hot-spot size and separation slowly growing over time, and the associated correlation length in particle speed increasing as a sublinear power law. Each individual spot, however, exists only transiently within an overall picture of strongly intermittent dynamics
