Negotiating Transaction Cost Economics: Oliver Williamson and his audiences

    Get PDF
The article studies the interaction between Oliver Williamson and his audiences in the construction of Transaction Cost Economics (TCE). His attentiveness to the feedback from different groups has played a major role in the success of TCE. First we discuss briefly the relevance of rhetoric to the study of economics. Rhetoric stresses that economists talk not to a void, but to peers and lay people with their habits, interests, institutional conditionings and values. Using the toolbox of rhetoric we identify Williamson’s intended audiences. Next we discuss his lists of claimed antecedents and the changes made therein. We explore how those (changing) connections could possibly have incited different audiences. In what follows, we use citation data to delineate his actual readers. This helps compare intended and actual audiences as we close with a discussion of Williamson’s ability to modify his intended reader and widen the audience of TCE in the social sciences.

Abstract: The creativity is a quality that has been revalued, especially in the training of work teams work, but still shows up as a point of tension in the design field. While it is understood as a fundamental element for the design process, creativity is still mystified by most designers as something indecipherable and unattainable. This article makes a connection between the Jungian concept of creativity and design process, highlighting some tools and techniques on creativity, which may contribute to the activity designer

Toward the validation of a literature classroom intervention to foster adolescents’ insight into human nature:an iterative design process

We report on the design process of a literature classroom intervention for 15-year-old students in the Netherlands, which aimed to foster their insight into human nature―insight into themselves, fictional others, and real-world others. Starting from a model of transformative reading, an exploration of the educational context, and a review of previous intervention studies, we designed an intervention in an iterative process. We evaluated the validity and practicality of two versions of the intervention. From teacher and student data, we concluded that the validity and practicality of the first version were suboptimal and identified various suggestions for improvement. In a second iteration, the initial design principles were reoperationalized. Based on these eoperationalized principles, we designed a second version of the intervention, which was found to be sufficiently valid and practical. In addition, the second iteration led to specifiying the initial design principles, by formulating subprinciples for operationalization in the classroom. All in all, this study demonstrates that an iterative design process is needed to arrive at a valid and practical intervention, and that this process may have the potential to further specify initial design principles

In this paper we analyse the contribution of two Iberian Foundations to the United Nations SDGs (Global Goals). In particular, we studied, the case of Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, from Portugal, and Yuste Foundation, from Spain, between 2016 and 2018. To achieve the main objective, three specific objectives were defined: the first one is to understand if sustainability is present in the Foundations Mission, Vision and Values; the second one is to analyse how the activities developed by each Foundations contribute to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and relate these activities to the SDGs targets; and finally to do a comparative analysis of the results of the two foundations. To reach these objectives, we use the case study method based on the analysis of annual reports and websites of the two Foundations and cross-referenced information about the mission, objectives, values and activities developed since 2016 with the specific targets of Global Goals. This paper show that Iberian Foundations contribute to the sustainable development goals, since its mission fits the SDGs as its activities have a strong social nature and aim at sustainable development in the regions where they operate and beyond. However, we do not find the reporting evidence because the Foundations do not provide sustainability reports, nor do they provide sustainability information in their annual reports and accounts, or on their web sites. The study will present contributions at several levels: literature and practice. It makes contributions to the literature on relationships between sustainability practices and sustainability report; the regulation and institutionalization of sustainability practices and reporting for SDGs. Also, it contributes to a better understanding of the role of Iberian Foundations as partnerships for global goals and their contribution to the effective develop, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels
