    Knowledge Management And Academic Library Performance: A Framework

    The role of knowledge as a valuable resource to the organization has been recognized by academicians and practitioners. For that reasons knowledge management (KM) has been introduced to help organization managing the knowledge systematically and effectively. KM has been widely practiced by many organizations including academic library in order to improve the organization’s performance. In this 21st century, KM has become an essential mechanism for library organizations to provide a dynamic and effective service to library users. This paper reviews the concepts of KM and library performance and proposes a framework for further research. The paper tries to establish a relationship between KM and library performance that will be beneficial for the academic library

    Coming home to Minden Barracks: Historical site at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

    The Minden Barracks was a military barracks located in the town of Gelugor in Northeast District of Penang Island, Malaysia. It was operational from 1939 to 1971 and the site has since been decommissioned to accommodate the main campus of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). It has been almost fifty years since the regiments left the place, however, the memories of staying in the area are still being reminisced by the residents, hence, representing a convergence of heritage tourism whereby travelling to the destination to experience the place and activities that realistically represent the stories and people of the past. This paper depicts the initiatives taken by the librarians from the Malaysiana and Archives Division of Universiti Sains Malaysia Library to learn about the historical background of the campus by tracking the information sharing of the previous residents of the barracks on the social media. It has led to an outcome of getting some information about how the place used to be and an organized event of Oral history with one of the former occupants who keep coming back to relive the memories of Minden Barracks, to feel the connection with the place, and to share stories and experiences of a place once called home to families and friends

    Oral history in USM library: supporting reference and research needs

    Oral history has usually referred to as an account of historical event, person or place, a first person memory of the past, by an eyewitness. It is regarded as living memories which have great importance in the history of mankind. It has also become a key resource for reconstructing, recreating and recording past and present knowledge of society. Academic libraries have assisted as repositories for books and manuscripts that support in revealing the stories of world’s civilization for centuries. The compilation of oral history at the library could help in reference and research if only the effort to record, document, preserve and promote information resources are well planned. Current technology could be of great help to be utilized in relaying the access to the researchers. Through institutional repositories, the visibility of the information could be increased. This paper will explain the importance of oral history, the background of the collection at USM Library and the initiatives taken to promote it as the primary and reliable sources that could play a role in historical research activities in the future

    Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a pioneering university that strives to empower future talent and next generation towards a sustainable knowledge transformation. Hamzah Sendut Library in supporting this effort has formed the Reading Campaign Committee with the tagline „Jombaca@PHS‟. This committee is established to promote love for books and reading culture to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) community in particular and society in general. The Library realizes that the expertise to manage reading materials shouldn‟t be keep by its own, but rather to be shared to others in need. Since its inception in 2009, various programs have been carried out to meet the objective. Numerous programs were conducted under three main programs, namely Community Network, Exhibition and Sharing is Caring. Starting as small-scale projects, now these initiatives have shown its positive impacts especially in building foundation for lifelong learning among USM community
