    Quantum teleportation of electrons in quantum wires with surface acoustic waves

    We propose and numerically simulate a semiconductor device based on coupled quantum wires, suitable for deterministic quantum teleportation of electrons trapped in the minima of surface acoustic waves.We exploit a network of interacting semiconductor quantum wires able to provide the universal set of gates for quantum information processing, with the qubit defined by the localization of a single electron in one of two coupled channels.The numerical approach is based on a time-dependent solution of the three-particle Schr\"odinger equation. First, a maximally entangled pair of electrons is obtained via Coulomb interaction between carriers in different channels. Then, a complete Bell-state measurement involving one electron from this pair and a third electron is performed. Finally, the teleported state is reconstructed by means of local one-qubit operations. The large estimated fidelity explicitely suggests that an efficient teleportation process could be reached in an experimental setup.Comment: 7 pages,4 figures, 1 tabl

    Comparison of in situ aerosol measurements with SAGE 2 and SAM 2 aerosol measurements during the airborne Antarctic ozone experiment

    Models indicate that stratospheric aerosols play a major role in the destruction of ozone during the Austral winter. Although many in situ measurements of stratospheric aerosols were made during the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment, changes of aerosol concentration and size distributions across the polar vortex are important to understanding changes of chemical species taking place during this time. Therefore comparing the in situ measurements with measurements made by satellites scanning wider areas will give a clearer picture of the possible role played by aerosols during this period. The wire impactor size distributions are compared to those from the aerosol spectrometers and a best fit size distribution determined. Aerosol extinctions are calculated from the in situ measurements and compared to the extinctions measured by the satellites. Five comparisons are made with SAGE 2 and four with SAM 2. Extinctions agree as close as a factor of two

Analysis of samples shows that aerosol volume increased for 6 months due to gas-to-particle conversion and then decreased to background levels in the following 6 months

    INTRODUCTION For muscular and sport exercise, the force production is one of the first important parameter to control. It is always possible to regulate force production via the intensity, but in order to minimize fatigue phenomenon it may be interesting to have a better control of parameters of stimulation. The aim of this work is to determine the interest of multi-electrodes with a new current type. METHOD The experiment was conducted on 8 healthy male volunteer subjects (P.E. students, 1.72111, 75kg, 29 years). The subjects were seated with the knee flexed at 60degr. Trunk and thigh angle was fixed at 1 lode. A force transducer linked to a computer is fixed on the ankle. Electrostimulation was provided by mean of a SG4 apparatus. A reference electrode was secured over the femoral nerve and the active electrodes were put in regards of the motor point of VL,VM, and Vl muscle. Left and right legs are stimulated alternately. A symmetrical square wave signal with a 2 ms rest between positive and negative phase (150 s) was applied at 80 Hz frequency. RESULTS After an initial ramp a nearly flat curve corresponding to tetanos was reached. The stimulation procedure allows to reach 90% and 100% of MVC on the left and right leg respectively. After training session (18 periods) we got a similar result and force induced on the right leg about 110% of the force considered as MVC. DISCUSSION For beginners as well as after electrical training sessions inducing performance increase, the new muscular stimulation procedures proposed allow to get maximal contraction with a relative comfort. Most of the studies report that ES can induce nearly 70 to 80% of MVC. With the proposed technique we can reached quite easily 100% of MVC. This will be a powerful tool to improve maximal force

    An adaptive explanation for the horse-like shape of seahorses

    The body shape of seahorses resembles the head and neck of horses because of their curved trunk, their ventrally bent head and their long snout. Seahorses evolved from ancestral, pipefish-like species, which have a straight body. Here, we use a biomechanical analysis and show that the seahorse's peculiar head, neck and trunk posture allows for the capture of small shrimps at larger distances from the eyes compared with pipefish. The results from the mathematical modelling were confirmed by kinematic data of prey-capturing syngnathids: compared with straight-bodied pipefish, all seahorse species studied consistently show an additional forward-reaching component in the path travelled by the mouth during their strikes at prey. This increased strike distance enlarges the volume of water they can probe for food, which is especially useful for tail-attached, sit-and-wait predators like seahorses. The biomechanics of prey capture thus provides a putative selective advantage that may explain the bending of the trunk into a horse-like shape

    Antarctic polar stratospheric aerosols: The roles of nitrates, chlorides and sulfates

    Nitric and hydrochloric acids have been postulated to condense in the winter polar stratosphere to become an important component of polar stratospheric clouds. One implication is that the removal of NO(y) from the gas phase by this mechanism allows high Cl(x) concentrations to react with O3, because the formation of ClNO3 is inhibited. Contributions of NO3 and Cl to the stratospheric aerosol were determined during the 1987 Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment by testing for the presence of nitrates and chlorides in the condensed phase. Aerosol particles were collected on four 500 micron diameter gold wires, each pretreated differently to give results that were specific to certain physical and chemical aerosol properties. One wire was carbon-coated for concentration and size analyses by scanning electron microscopy; X-ray energy dispersive analyses permitted the detection of S and Cl in individual particles. Three more wires were coated with Nitron, barium chloride and silver nitrate, respectively, to detect nitrate, sulfate and chloride in aerosol particles. All three ions, viz., sulfates, nitrates and chlorides were detected in the Antarctic stratospheric aerosol. In terms of number concentrations, the aerosol was dominated by sulfates, followed by chlorides and nitrates. An inverse linear regression can be established between nitrate concentrations and ozone mixing ratio, and between temperature and nitrates

    Local Density of States in Mesoscopic Samples from Scanning Gate Microscopy

    We study the relationship between the local density of states (LDOS) and the conductance variation ΔG\Delta G in scanning-gate-microscopy experiments on mesoscopic structures as a charged tip scans above the sample surface. We present an analytical model showing that in the linear-response regime the conductance shift ΔG\Delta G is proportional to the Hilbert transform of the LDOS and hence a generalized Kramers-Kronig relation holds between LDOS and ΔG\Delta G. We analyze the physical conditions for the validity of this relationship both for one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems when several channels contribute to the transport. We focus on realistic Aharonov-Bohm rings including a random distribution of impurities and analyze the LDOS-ΔG\Delta G correspondence by means of exact numerical simulations, when localized states or semi-classical orbits characterize the wavefunction of the system.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
