    100+ Gbps/λ 50 km C-Band Downstream PON Using CD Digital Pre-Compensation and Direct-Detection ONU Receiver

    We experimentally demonstrate a single-wavelength 100 Gbps downstream PON transmission aided by chromatic dispersion digital pre-compensation (CD-DPC) using simple digital signal processing (DSP) finite impulse response (FIR) filters in combination with an IQ Mach-Zehnder modulator (IQ-MZM) at the transmitter side and direct-detection receiver at the optical network unit (ONU). A reach of 50 km over standard single-mode fiber in C-band and an optical distribution network (ODN) loss of 28.5 dB are achieved. Transmission of 50 and 125 Gbps over 50 km of fiber is also tested, achieving 32 dB and 24 dB of ODN loss, respectively. The complexity of the filters, the optimization of the main design parameters, and the tolerance of the CD-DPC to the uncertainty of the exact accumulated link dispersion are analyzed in detail

    A spectroscopic survey of the youngest field stars in the solar neighbourhood. I. The optically bright sample

    We present the first results of a ground-based programme conducted on 1-4m class telescopes. Our sample consists of 1097 active and presumably young stars, all of them being optical counterparts of RASS X-ray sources in the northern hemisphere. We concentrate on the 704 optically brightest (V_Ticho<=9.5 mag) candidates. We acquired high-res spectroscopy in the Halpha/Li spectral regions for 426 of such stars without relevant literature data. We describe the sample and the observations and we start to discuss its physical properties. We used a cross-correlation technique and other tools to derive accurate radial/rotational velocities and to perform a spectral classification for both single and SB2 stars. The spectral subtraction technique was used to derive chromospheric activity levels and Li abundances. We estimated the fraction of young single stars and multiple systems in stellar soft X-ray surveys and the contamination by more evolved systems, like RS CVn's. We classified stars on the basis of Li abundance and give a glimpse of their sky distribution. The sample appears to be a mixture of young Pleiades-/Hyades- like stars plus an older Li-poor population (~1-2 Gyr). 7 stars with Li abundance compatible with the age of IC 2602 (~30 Myr) or younger were detected as well, although 2 appear to be Li-rich giants. The discovery of a large number of Li-rich giants is another outcome of this survey. The contamination of soft X-ray surveys by old systems in which the activity level is enhanced by tidal synchronisation is not negligible, especially for K-type stars. 5 stars with Li content close to the primordial abundance are probably associated with known moving groups in the solar neighbourhood.     Experimental Demonstration of 100 Gbps/λ C-Band Direct-Detection Downstream PON Using Non-Linear and CD Compensation with 29 dB+ OPL over 0 Km-100 Km

    Passive Optical Networks (PON), able to operate at 50 Gbps per wavelength (λ), are under development and standardization, based on intensity-modulation (IM) and direct-detection (DD) systems. The next step in PON evolution will be driven by 5G/6G fronthauling capacity demands, and will require the development of 100 Gbps/λ (and beyond) systems, which poses big challenges if maintaining the DD-format. In this contribution, we analyze a 100 Gbps/λ PON architecture able to preserve the IM-DD approach at the Optical Network Unit (ONU), placing the complexity at the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), thanks to Digital Signal Processing (DSP). We experimentally demonstrate a 100 Gbps/λ transmission using this architecture in the downstream (DS) direction. Chromatic dispersion digital pre-compensation (CD-DPC) in combination with an IQ Mach-Zehnder Modulator (IQ-MZM) is used at the transmitter (TX). Keeping the ONU DSP as simple as possible, as compared with current DSP proposals for 50 Gbps/λ PON, is another main goal of this work. Adaptive equalization (AEQ) is used to correct for linear impairments, in addition to digital non-linear correction (NLC) at the receiver (RX). We compare two NLC approaches: a full Volterra Non-Linear Equalizer (VNLE) and a simpler NLC technique based on a square-root like function (SQRT). Operation over standard single-mode fiber (SMF) in C-band, achieving reaches from 0 km to 100 km and Optical Path Loss (OPL) values higher than 29 dB, are shown. The analyzed proposal is directly applicable to Terabit-capable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-PON, and can be extended to very high-speed Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)-PON and TWDM-PON, with some modifications discussed here

    Eurocode 7 and rock engineering design: The case of rockfall protection barriers

    The Eurocode 7 or EC7 is the Reference Design Code (RDC) for geotechnical design including rock engineering design within the European Union (EU). Moreover, its principles have also been adopted by several other countries, becoming a key design standard for geotechnical engineering worldwide. It is founded on limit state design (LSD) concepts, and the reliability of design is provided mainly by a semi-probabilistic method based on partial factors. The use of partial factors is currently an advantage, mainly for the simplicity in its applicability, and a limitation, especially concerning geotechnical designs. In fact, the application of partial factors to geotechnical design has proven to be difficult. In this paper, the authors focus on the way to apply EC7 principles to rock engineering design by analyzing the design of rockfall protection structures as an example. A real case of slope subjected to rockfall is reported to outline the peculiarity connected to rock engineering. The main findings are related to the complementarity of the reliability-based design (RBD) approach within EC7 principles and the possibility of overcoming the limitations of a partial factor approach to this type of engineering problem
