Zero-Temperature Properties of the Quantum Dimer Model on the Triangular Lattice
Using exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we
have studied the zero-temperature properties of the quantum dimer model on the
triangular lattice on clusters with up to 588 sites. A detailed comparison of
the properties in different topological sectors as a function of the cluster
size and for different cluster shapes has allowed us to identify different
phases, to show explicitly the presence of topological degeneracy in a phase
close to the Rokhsar-Kivelson point, and to understand finite-size effects
inside this phase. The nature of the various phases has been further
investigated by calculating dimer-dimer correlation functions. The present
results confirm and complement the phase diagram proposed by Moessner and
Sondhi on the basis of finite-temperature simulations [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf

Electronic correlations in vanadium chalcogenides: BaVSe3 versus BaVS3
Albeit structurally and electronically very similar, at low temperature the
quasi-one-dimensional vanadium sulfide BaVS3 shows a metal-to-insulator
transition via the appearance of a charge-density-wave state, while BaVSe3
apparently remains metallic down to zero temperature. This different behavior
upon cooling is studied by means of density functional theory and its
combination with the dynamical mean-field theory and the rotationally-invariant
slave-boson method. We reveal several subtle differences between these
chalcogenides that provide indications for the deviant behavior of BaVSe3 at
low temperature. In this regard, a smaller Hubbard U in line with an increased

The economics of Theocracy
This paper models theocracy as a regime where the clergy in power retains knowledge of the cost of political production but which is potentially incompetent or corrupt. This is contrasted with a secular regime where government is contracted out to a secular ruler, and hence the church loses the possibility to observe costs and creates for itself a hidden-information agency problem. The church is free to choose between regimes – a make-or-buy choice – and we look for the range of environmental parameters that are most conducive to the superiority of theocracy and therefore to its occurrence and persistence, despite its disabilities. Numerical solution of the model indicates that the optimal environment for a theocracy is likely to be one in which the “bad” (high-cost) state is disastrously bad but the probability of its occurrence is not very high. A broad review of the historical evidence yields some suggestive support to the predictions of the model. Finally, the model is shown to be applicable to the make-or-buy-government choices of other groups, such as organized labor and the military
First order Mott transition at zero temperature in two dimensions: Variational plaquette study
The nature of the metal-insulator Mott transition at zero temperature has
been discussed for a number of years. Whether it occurs through a quantum
critical point or through a first order transition is expected to profoundly
influence the nature of the finite temperature phase diagram. In this paper, we
study the zero temperature Mott transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model
on the square lattice with the variational cluster approximation. This takes
into account the influence of antiferromagnetic short-range correlations. By
contrast to single-site dynamical mean-field theory, the transition turns out

Anaphe - OO Libraries and Tools for Data Analysis
The Anaphe project is an ongoing effort to provide an Object Oriented software environment for data analysis in HENP experiments. A range of commercial and public domain libraries is used to cover basic functionalities; on top of these libraries a set of HENP-specific C++ class libraries for histogram management, fitting, plotting and ntuple-like data analysis has been developed. In order to comply with the user requirements for a command-line driven tool, we have chosen to use a scripting language (Python) as the front-end for a data analysis tool. The loose coupling provided by the consequent use of (AIDA compliant) Abstract Interfaces for each component in combination with the use of shared libraries for their implementation provides an easy integration of existing libraries into modern scripting languages thus allowing for rapid application development. This integration is simplified even further using a specialised toolkit (SWIG) to create "shadow classes" for the Python language, which map the definitions of the Abstract Interfaces almost at a one-to-one level. This paper will give an overview of the architecture and design choices and will present the current status and future developments of the project
Overall evaluation of Skylab imagery for mapping of Latin America
The author has identified the following significant results. Skylab imagery is both desired and needed by the Latin American catographic agencies. The imagery is cost beneficial for the production of new mapping and maintenance of existing maps at national topographic series scales. If this information was available on a near time routine coverage basis, it would provide an excellent additional data base to the Latin American cartographic community, specifically Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Venezuela
