Local Anomalies, Local Equivariant Cohomology and the Variational Bicomplex
The locality conditions for the vanishing of local anomalies in field theory
are shown to admit a geometrical interpretation in terms of local equivariant
cohomology, thus providing a method to deal with the problem of locality in the
geometrical approaches to the study of local anomalies based on the
Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The local cohomology is shown to be related to the
cohomology of jet bundles by means of the variational bicomplex theory. Using
these results and the techniques for the computation of the cohomology of
invariant variational bicomplexes in terms of relative Gel'fand-Fuks cohomology
introduced in [6], we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the
cancellation of local gravitational and mixed anomalies.Comment: 36 pages. The paper is divided in two part
Territory and solidarity: the European Union territorial cohesion policy and the role of local institutions
This paper analyses the evolution of the notion of territorial cohesion in the European Union, with an emphasis on the importance given to the processes of participation and to the specificities of local realities. Despite space and territory has always received attention from the economic theories of development, only recently the territorial dimension was considered fundamental by the European Union. Even though the European Rural Development Policy has always had a greater territorial focus than other European policies, the real relevance of participatory models and the involvement of local actors within this policy has been questioned and must be scrutinized. The reference to a Portuguese cooperative financial institution illustrates this assessment by providing evidence on the role that a local institution can play in rural development.FC
Multiplicity fluctuations in the string clustering approach
We present our results on multiplicity fluctuations in the framework of the
string clustering approach. We compare our results --with and without
clustering formation-- with CERN SPS NA49 data. We find a non-monotonic
behaviour of these fluctuations as a function of the collision centrality,
which has the same origin as the observed fluctuations of transverse momentum:
the correlations between the produced particles due to the cluster formation.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, revte
Heavy-ion Physics at a Fixed-Target Experiment Using the LHC Proton and Lead Beams (AFTER@LHC): Feasibility Studies for Quarkonium and Drell-Yan Production
We outline the case for heavy-ion-physics studies using the multi-TeV lead
LHC beams in the fixed-target mode. After a brief contextual reminder, we
detail the possible contributions of AFTER@LHC to heavy-ion physics with a
specific emphasis on quarkonia. We then present performance simulations for a
selection of observables. These show that , and
production in heavy-ion collisions can be studied in new energy and
rapidity domains with the LHCb and ALICE detectors. We also discuss the
relevance to analyse the Drell-Yan pair production in asymmetric
nucleus-nucleus collisions to study the factorisation of the nuclear
modification of partonic densities and of further quarkonia to restore their
status of golden probes of the quark-gluon plasma formation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
